  • Burnout is not a new topic when it comes to healthcare. While burnout existed before the COVID-19 pandemic, the additional burden placed on healthcare workers has only worsened burnout across the industry and pharmacists are no different. In this video podcast episode, I am reviewing a recent Pharmacy Times article called “Pharmacists Report High Levels of Burnout, Resulting in Understaffing and Alternative Career Paths”. The content of this article is based on the results of the 2023 Pharmacy Times Burnout and Mental Health Survey.
This article hits many aspects of burnout, its causes, and how it impacts the life of pharmacists. Here are a few of the questions I will be addressing from the survey.
    - On a scale of 1 to 7, what is your level of burnout now vs. before the COVID-19 pandemic?
    - Do you think burnout has contributed to understaffing?
    - Does your job allow for work-life balance?
    - Is your company trying to improve burnout in the workplace? If so, have those interventions been effective?
    And more!

As a pharmacist retail after 17 years at Walgreens burned me out. I moved to hospital work environment and now I love my job. I work retail on the side for extra cash. I make really really good money with my combined job income. Yes, I feel tired but the $$ makes it tolerable. I see people breaking their backs for far less than I make and I just shut my mouth. It’s hard to cry about my work life when I make over 200k a year.

Well done on this video. I am a graduate intern at Walgreens and have been a tech/intern at multiple pharmacies for the last 5.5 years and agree with a lot of what you said. It’s amazing how delusional and out of touch the people at the top making these decisions (staffing, workloads, pushing unattainable metrics, etc.) truly are. I think not much is going to change unfortunately until the actual workflow is addressed. Throwing money and sign on bonuses without addressing core workflow/staffing issues is like throwing duct tape on the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.

Thank you. The analogy at the end of your comment is the best I've heard to describe how the situation is being handled in many pharmacies/health systems. The underlying cause needs to be addressed.

I can say I am approaching the burnout level! After 23 years at my current job, I am seriously considering changing jobs. I think I am suffering PTSD now that the pandemic has calmed down and I now have a chance to reflect on the past 3 years of non-stop work

I hate to hear you are suffering 😔 I've been there, and it is horrible. Know that you aren't alone and there are options to help you! 💕

This is a great video! You hit a lot of points on the head-what is sad though is that I don’t think things will get better anytime soon-we will more than likely see more walkouts and people leaving the profession before HOPEFULLY some laws and business practices change for the better. I also agree with the commenter below-these sign on bonuses etc are just duct tape on the larger problem

Jip it sucks. Im a 27 old pharmacist, and I have NO life. I knew it would be hard but geez at the moment I just want to give up. The problem is I can't go back to study something else so what's my options? Its soooo difficult to get a job in South Africa. So basically I can't affort to quit my crappy job, I just have to continue living in hell for the rest of my days. It's sad.

I’ve been a community pharmacist for only 10 months but have been a technician and intern for 7 years and feel so burnt out that I’m starting to question whether pharmacy was even a good choice for me.

I understand the feeling of being a new practitioner and burned out because you have been in the profession for so long already in other roles. I was about 7 years in when I graduated as well. I am in a much better place now than where I was before.

I've been hacking at this joke profession for 25 years. I'm just gonna ride it 10 more years and bail. I don't see it being a viable profession for very much longer. We really don't do as much as people think we do. Sorry not sorry.
