    Phenomenal playing by Sommerhalder.

Playing a baroque trumpet is nothing like playing a modern valved trumpet. You have to do a lot more of it with your lips alone than you do on a modern instrument, so when you hear someone playing virtuosically like this on a baroque trumpet, you know your listening to someone who is really quite good. Anyone who has played through grade 12 on trumpet can play this on a valved trumpet. Not everyone who has played for a very long time can play this on the baroque equivalent.
I must also congratulate the chamber orchestra on their performance too. When you see members of a Baroque chamber orchestra glancing at each other with a smile, and see them all looking at either the concert master or the harpsichordist for a cue to start and at what speed, you know you have an ensemble which is playing very organically, and together as a whole.
The micing left a little to be desired, but in a live concert like this it is often the case. It's about playing to the audience, not to a sound engineer.
This is rather an unusual layout for a baroque ensemble. Having the first violins on the left and the seconds on the right is not that out of the ordinary, But usually the string base will be behind the celli and the wind payers will be in the centre. Here, the winds are behind the violas rather than in the centre, and that's the part which is particularly unusual. I'm wondering if they're taking from a specific piece of research on this, or if they just put people there kind of randomly. As a result of this positioning, the oboes don't come through as clearly as they ought to, and the bass line ends up sounding a bit cloudy.

Many thanks for your precious and positive comment! The concert was recorded with a private camcorder in 2009, when private digital filming possibilities were still limited. Video recording of this concert wasn’t initially planned, it was just filmed for archive purposes at that time. The balance issues you mention are due to the fact that only the camera’s microphone was used.
Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed, and thank you for listening.

@@GiulianoSommerhalderTrumpet Oh! Well that explains everything! Actually, for one microphone on a camcorder, that sounds pretty good, and I'd rather hear a historically informed performance of the Fasch recorded with this equipment than to have no recording at all.
I love the Fasch, and always have, even though I was a professional string player. For me, it was never about what the instruments were. It was all about the ensemble playing, and also, as an music historian, the historical angle of a piece. I'm rather happy for the camera angle... my people are right behind you. Yup. Black sheep violist here. Butt of all jokes, and laughing at them all. They're holding their own in this video though. I miss playing, but I don't miss living out of a hanging bag while on tour though.
I went professional when historical performance was in its infancy, and was fortunate enough to play with David Monroe and Chris Hogwood before David's tragic death. I have always kicked myself for not seeing it coming, and therefore, not being able to help. It was my good fortune though, that when Chris started putting his band together he tapped me to be one of its first members.
Because of my long term familiarity with the style, I think I'm qualified to tell you that you did a fine job, and feel confident that you will accept that for the praise it is.
Since writing that first comment, I've been on you channel listening. I'm not as much of an authority on music of Peskin's time, but I will say that the lad playing the trumpet on those recordings has more musical shades and colours pouring out of his trumpet than a rainbow even if you include the infra red and ultra violet ends of the spectrum. In my opinion, he's pretty darnn good. Not bad looking either. As I said, I'm a string player who spent her career doing baroque and classical historical performance, so I don't know that you can call me any sort of an authority on that, but I do know what I like, and I really liked those recordings. If anyone else is reading our comments back and forth, I highly recommend giving them a listen. It's some really good music played by two really good musicians.
I now have to thank you doubly for all the music that you're making available here. Your audience is the richer for it.

Hey Giuliano! You have any reccomendations for Baroque horns like this. I've been looking at Egger Natural Trumpets, and they seem to be the only brand I can find.

Hey Dustin! This is an Egger indeed, and I am quite happy with it. Cristian Bosc also makes similar ones, and a few manufacturers in England (not up-to-date on those though). Take care

This masterpiece is tough enough on a modern Bb piccolo or D trumpet, let alone a natural trumpet with only holes like a flute!
