"Kohlhiesel's Daughters" ("Kohlhiesels Töchter" - 1920) is a comedy that is about equally indebted to Shakespere's "The Taming of the Shrew" and the Tevye stories of Sholem Aleichem.
Mr. Kohlhiesel has two marriageable daughters. The younger one is pretty and sweet-natured, the older is just the opposite. The younger wishes to marry the boy she loves, but that isn't possible because the older daughter must be married first. The problem is finding a man crazy enough to marry such a difficult woman.
This is probably Lubitsch's funniest silent film, a broad slapstick farce played out in the beautiful snowswept Bavarian Alps. Henny Porten is outstanding as both sisters, and she receives excellent support from Emil Jannings and Gustav von Wangenheim as the two suiters and Jakob Tiedtke as the long-suffering father.
This video is taken from the public domain copy residing in the Internet Archive. That one has German intertitles and French subtitles. I replaced them with a complete set of English intertitles. The lovely score is from the original.

What a treasure! Thank you very much for uploading this early masterpiece of Ernst Lubitsch, who later earned fame in Hollywood for his films with the very special Lubitsch Touch. BTW: The multi-talented film genius Billy Wilder, in his Paramount office, had a "banner" on the wall saying HOW WOULD LUBITSCH DO IT?
Had Inot read about them, I would have taken the intertitles as the original ones. So nice and well fitting to a 1920 film.

This was wonderful; I love to get a look at the crockery, furniture, clothes of the day - it's all fascinating! The quirky storyline (thrashing his unwanted wife on their wedding day!) & over the top acting made this highly entertaining.

The cut at 19:35 might be the the best cut on whole movie history. This cut is exactly what essence of cinema is.

so lovely to see a film, well filmed in snow and ice. I especially liked the scene with everyone coming out of church, and holding onto the rather fragile handrails. And some being very careful and others just sliding on their feet! That is so where I live here in NH in the winter. All the scenery reminds me of winter here. Yes we do get out and do things!
