Ray Mears is by far the most skilled survivalist, and bushcraft expert on television and one of the top in the world. I love that he teaches true survival and doesn't do dumb stunts like drink urine or eat camel droppings. People live despite those types of careless actions not because of them. The amount of knowledge Mr !ears carries would make it very unlikely he would ever be put in a situation where having to do things like that would ever cross his mind.
Grylls has many commendable achievements hes put his body on the line numerous times swimming under icey lakes youngest brit to have summited Everest flown over Everest on a parachute eats what many wont yet all people can remember him for is drinking urine?
Niko Bellic I have seen BG do some incredibly stupid things that NOBODY should ever do in a survival situation. It is all bullshit TV. If you find yourself trapped in a remote area there is only one man’s advice to follow. Ray Mears. BG is a dangerous idiot!
Interesting how a few days in the (relatively) cold and wet can have such a massive impact on people not used to it. Proof that survival is arguably more mental than physical.
Ray Mears' is the thinking man's survivalist. If I were stranded I'd want Ray with me, over Bears. Bears would have me pissing in my mouth, eating insects and living in a camel's stomach. Ray would have a table and chairs, a tent and tea ready before noon. Made out of whatever was under his feet!
I was looking for coastal foraging videos and it took me here. My god did this take me back to my e and e training when I was a Royal Marine. In fact the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
This bloke is my favourite survivalist! : ) Wish his show was still on in the states. He focused more in techniques and knowledge than that other git who tends to jump around off things like a rabid Lemming.
I think Bear Grylls appeals more to an audience looking to be entertained and shocked. But ultimately they are both highly trained and highly capable survival experts.
Thank you do much for posting these videos. They are informative and inspiring, to me and others like me, to get out and learn more about bushcraft and survival.
ray mears is a legend in the uk glad you like his vids. i have watched just about all of them which is a lot. may i recommend his aboriginal britain series its shown quite often here on the bbc and is brilliant
This guy's videos are so much more interesting than Bear's Why haven't I heard of him before? You Brits need to find a better way to get we Americans more of your good videos like this!!!
The only thing i'd be worried about sleeping like they are with those A frames is a bug crawling in my ear haha. I don't know why, but that's a fear I have when i'm out in the bush. I don't know how common it is, but it would suck
There are many of components to prepping. One place I discovered which successfully combines these is the Marla survive system (check it out on google) definately the no.1 survival website that I've seen. look at the unbelievable free video.
Differency is that Ray teaches what to do and Bear teaches what not to do. For example, Bear is well known and remembered for drinking hes own pee that is something what is teached at kindergarde, do not drink your pee. Especiatly when you are on "survival" situation and most likely will suffer dehydration, your pee is full of sodium and other shit, and you will be killing yourself with your own pee.
Be fair, Bear Grylls was SAS trained, so he knows what he's talking about. I think the problem is, he's made a name for himself by showcasing the ultra-extreme survival skills that most of us are ( hopefully !! ) very unlikely to face, but which SAS soldiers do need to learn. Ray Mears is more of a "real-life" kind of guy - although, he has had some high-profile exposure, e.g. helping the police track down Raoul Moat. I will admit to enjoying watching both of their work online, and whilst Grylls is undoubtedly entertaining, it's Mears that I'll be looking to for practical tips on my next camping expedition :-)
it was actually my mate who put this up to annoy me because I like them both but he is a big ray mears fan doesn't like bear grylls so wanted to wind me up haha fair comment tho thanks I will send him that :)
A axe in a military survival pack surprises me as you want to remain stelthed, and a axe chopping on wood can be heard from miles away, in my opinion a folding saw would be more suitable for military use as it dont make much noise and is more efficient in cutting sapplings to make shelters etc, so you get your temporary camp up asap, however with that said, a axe is more durable and can do more things and be resharpened, but for stelth to avoid enemy they aint no good. bahco laplander ftw.
Unfortunately one key thing seems like it is not thought (or the have very limited experience). The thing is: "Do not work against nature (the marsh, the bay, the river and so on), work with it. Make it your best friend".
Squirrel isnt bad at all. Rabbits are downright tasty. Almost all the small games are good. Weirdly the small game meat I dislike the most is wild turkey. I think it's because it's a regular meat and I'm used to eating the ones raised and sold in the store. I mean it's definitely edible but I havent had a wild one yet that was better than the most overcooked and dry cooked one from the store. I live in a family that hunts so I probably taste one every year at least once and it's never very good compared to what I'm used to buying in a store. Kind of weird and makes you wonder what they do to the raised birds to make them so tasty...lol
i listened to a seminar from that guy that went down, he said he hid under a tree for 5 days, that was basically his whole story, the movie behind enemy lines and all the hype youve ever heard about his story re bullshit, the guy said flat out that he hid under a tree for most of the time
Ray is not about flash and show. He is all skill and mellow and relaxing to listen to. Bear has tons of skills but became Hollywood which is what the market wanted. You don't make it in American TV without flash.
If you wait until you are hungry to start to hunt for food, it could already be too late, you will be weak, tired and find it hard to concentrate, with very short attention span, to the point where you will miss very obvious food, that you would otherwise had time to see and use.
Well. That's the slow way to skin a squirrel. I hope that was a student and not the survival instructor cause you only need to make 1 cut on it's back to peel off the pelt.
Apparantly people are more interested in watching a man drink his own piss and eat disgusting bugs, than to learn something they can actually use in real life
Great guy met him once on this army training exercise very laidback complete survival expert, better then that bear grilles you don't jump out of a tree and pick up a live snake then start to bite its head of!! then eat its raw body, he should know it's got internal parasites worms also will be covered in salmonella.
After watching this, it seems that if any of these students were in a survival situation they would be fucked! Moaning about being out on the moor for 24 hours, wanting to go home to their telly, what a disaster! Ray seems pretty dismayed with the over all outcome.
For TV shows he did one on Northern Canada which may appeal to more Americans or if you want extreme then watch the ones on Ozzie outback bushcraft. :)
Couldn't agree more. I bought all his DVDs from here ray.mears.com I've watched them over and over. He and Grylls may both be British - but the two couldn't be further apart.
Laurence OfArabia Night vision can be very deceiving. I was driving a Humvee in the Mojave desert at night with no moon. Moon is your friend when it comes to using Night vision. I found myself almost rolling over with no warning. Scary
Misty Groves Night vision can be seen 2 ways {3 actually}Infra -Red, but it can be a white background and black shapes,or Black background with more white shapes, the next is Image intensification in green
Well,food-wise,I've shot and eaten copperhead snake, ruffed grouse, and un-aged deer(just gutted)and enjoyed it.As far as plants, berries, roots, and bark, first knowing it's edible, and how to process and cook it is necessary.Late Spring through late summer much is available in the northeastern USA edible plantwise, during winter the cambium of white pine can be eaten if there's no game available. Some insects like grasshoppers are edible(not all but most)grubs are supposedly tasty but should be cooked first.Fishing wise, gorge hooks can be made from wood or bone, the inner strands of paracord for fishing line.
Horses for courses I think. Both are very talented, I prefer Rays laid back style, and his podge inspires confidence in his ability to maintain bodyweight in any situation. Your mileage may vary!
Great videos. I would like to see him do one on surviving in the Sonoran or Mojave deserts in the states. Key locations being death valley or the grand canyon.
I agree, I hate how what I believe to be Bear's potential, was squandered by some producer wanting flash. I have to search UA-cam hard to find watch worthy shows that keep me coming back. Ray's stuff I can sit and watch again and again. I hope Bear finds a better way to do more survival related stuff for the sake of those of us thirsty to get any information even if it is salted up with flash and bang.
I've got friends from Canada and Russia who have been genuinely shocked by just how horrific conditions can get in the UK. Us Brits whinge when it isn't 20+ degrees in the summer and when we get snow for (shock horror! a handful of days in major cities in a year and the roads are slightly icy) but i've nearly had hypothermia in countryside you wouldn't expect it in.
Thats good news, because i'm planning for a financial collapse and as i want to escape to an isolated part of Australian coastline if it does happen, water in summer was a worry. But not now, this is tremendous info for me, thankyou
who evidently havent got a CV any where near as impressive as this guy has! even he knows his tv series is tongue in cheek! and should be interpreted as such! its not real survival but survival entertainment! you take the show as it was meant to be enjoyed lightheartedly! ligthen up dudes!! its only a show! ray mears is the guy to measure up to survival wise! but bear is fitter and does more crazy stuff! theyre both good in their own rights!
I use to go hunting with an ex SAS man and he said that when he was going through the recruitment tests he was grabbed out of his bed in the middle of the night, blindfolded taken into a chopper travelled for a few hours then thrown from the chopper. He was in the Australian bush and he was to get his way back to base with any means possible in a certain amount of time.. Limited food/water and limited survival gear. And no mobile phones either to call for help lol
Their saying some people would not eat a rabbit, bird, squeral , hell I would eat that in a hartbeat, just like home cooking. once in the winter, I shot a rabbit, I put in the freezer, in the spring I had shot a squral , I got the rabbiet out of the freezer, put him in the slow cooker along with the squrel , and some veggys, I called it squrabbitt stew. mmm good sruff.
During the second world war most people in the rural south west of England were eating rabbit and fished the sea and rivers as these were obviously exempt from rationing and this was before most people had home freezers, You cannot berate people for being accustomed to the standard of living of their time
parachute accident and still does these risky stunts for tv execs incl backflip somersaults for charity work! what i like about him is thats hes game for anything! & the scout movement and young scouts love him to pieces! no matter what your standpoint is on his lame tv series hes doing a lot of good
Ray Mears is an outstanding human. His quiet dignity and expertise is almost overwhelming. I cannot ever tire of him.
He did a great honor to Canada filming, "Ray mears northern wilderness"
Outstanding series should be shown to Canadian High School Students!!

Yeah, there is literally no one else in the world I'd rather be stuck in a survival situation with!
Grylls has many commendable achievements hes put his body on the line numerous times swimming under icey lakes youngest brit to have summited Everest flown over Everest on a parachute eats what many wont yet all people can remember him for is drinking urine?

BG is a dangerous idiot!
@@valeriechaumeziere377 And questionable . Some good editing helps BG.
One of the top in the world?
same stamp as that Australian duck egg who got killed by a sting ray.
Nothin makes me happier grabbin a coffee, rainy day, lil smoke and Ray Mears.
Honestly it's what I live for XD
Mr Mears is so good at his craft, teaching us.
I sharpen my knives Samurai Style thanks to this Pommie Bastard.
Excellent post and God Save Our Queen.
As much as i like Bear Grylls Ray Mears seems much more informed and aware of his surroundings
Bear Grylls admitted that Ray mears was "tougher" than him.
Interesting how a few days in the (relatively) cold and wet can have such a massive impact on people not used to it. Proof that survival is arguably more mental than physical.
Love to see an updated version of this episode
Ray is a legend........and that cannot be underestimated!
Yes, five star hotel, 'survival' for show then five star hotels, and so on.
I was looking for coastal foraging videos and it took me here. My god did this take me back to my e and e training when I was a Royal Marine. In fact the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

Getting covered in ticks would be a problem too.
He's been around wayyy longer than Bear, this episode alone is years old. He's the real deal unlike the bear who's just a menace to the wild.
15:50 that bird line trap works, I know someone who used it to survive.
Thanks for the upload
Dear god, imagine sitting for two months in one of those wibbly wobbly balloon boats, you would probably puke when trying to walk on solid land again
Looks like they are receiving some valuable training. As for eating the Squirrel's fried squirrel is actually good eating.
So interesting thanks so much for all your postings. 👍
Really enjoyed watching this again. Thanks for uploading.
There are many of components to prepping.
One place I discovered which successfully combines these is the Marla survive system
(check it out on google) definately the no.1 survival website that I've seen.
look at the unbelievable free video.
The part where they had flashlights was supposed to simulate peace-conditions while waiting for rescue. The "behind enemy lines" thing came later.
Differency is that Ray teaches what to do and Bear teaches what not to do. interesting orchestral version of massive attack in this episode, love a bit of mears.
you now have piers morgan too!! i am also affectionate friendly towards our uncooperative colonists!!
I will do that for sure. The man obviously knows his craft!
Excellent informative lesson 👍
Do people in the UK not go outside and enjoy the outdoors? The looks on their faces when the instructor was cleaning the squirrel was priceless.
I love these episodes
I wish we could find out more about going to the toilet in the bush, hygiene, hiding your deposits
this guy is sooooooo much better than bear grylls
That's because he can actually do these things

It just so happens that Mears trains the services in such skills...
This goes well with geni.us/thelostways the survival guides

Awsome Ray Mear`s
Man, I wish there were curryhouses in the wilderness.
Ok thank you for letting me know I will look into it :)
I will check that out, thank you.
Some survival expert. In the part where he ditches into the sea he didn't even give himself a bird shit enema.
If you wait until you are hungry to start to hunt for food, it could already be too late, you will be weak, tired and find it hard to concentrate, with very short attention span, to the point where you will miss very obvious food, that you would otherwise had time to see and use.

Great video! Need to practice it!
+lromeroyt well, just for fun!
Everyone loves a bit of night nav!
behind enemy lines tells the story of the pilot
WWRD?
(What Would Ray Do?)
Apparantly people are more interested in watching a man drink his own piss and eat disgusting bugs, than to learn something they can actually use in real life
Ray Mears for President
Great guy met him once on this army training exercise very laidback complete survival expert, better then that bear grilles you don't jump out of a tree and pick up a live snake then start to bite its head of!! then eat its raw body, he should know it's got internal parasites worms also will be covered in salmonella.
Didnt notice the snake doing Bear Grylls any harm !?
At 16:42 Ray says "even though these men and woman could go to war anytime" and we'll look what happened Iraq and Afghanistan
After watching this, it seems that if any of these students were in a survival situation they would be fucked! Moaning about being out on the moor for 24 hours, wanting to go home to their telly, what a disaster! Ray seems pretty dismayed with the over all outcome.

The first minute of this video is the most insane radical shit ive ever seen
Couldn't agree more. I bought all his DVDs from here ray.mears.com I've watched them over and over. He and Grylls may both be British - but the two couldn't be further apart.
16:15 moment they realise squirrel is the only thing on the menu
26:30 That guy with the face camouflage is doing it right....but uh-oh...what's on his head? Yep a glaringly obvious white hat! lol
Sometimes nightvison makes black look all white and vice versa
night vision makes it look that way
Laurence OfArabia Night vision can be very deceiving.
3501Chris so wouldn't the enemy also be using night vision
Scott O'Grady hid his face in the dirt and cried. He was not a hero battling the enemy and the wild. He said so in an interview.
I am really blown away by some of the asinine comments on this vid.
Wow. This guy awesome
Il est génial. My Dad was fine with eating animals but he thought bugs and grubs disgusting.
awesome survival
OH I WANT Some retraining
Sounds interesting enough.
OH SHIT! it's the drill instructor
To start a fire if lost in the bush, you just chant the name three times "Ray Mears, Ray Mears, Ray Mears"
If only natgeo and discovery just got their shit together...
Bearly Grilled is man vs nature. Mears is man WITH nature. the winner is a no brainer.
Thanks!
This man is awesome but the chief is Bear Grylls and his madness.
Horses for courses I think. Both are very talented, I prefer Rays laid back style, and his podge inspires confidence in his ability to maintain bodyweight in any situation. Your mileage may vary!
by viewing your channel I gues all the knowledge you have about the military is learned by playing videogames? or are you in the service?
Who cares where the guy lives the truth is Ray Mears is a boss lol
Chicks can still be in the air force
It's mainly pilots and navigators i think.
How did they go to the toilet during those eight hours in the inflatable raft?
Great videos. I would like to see him do one on surviving in the Sonoran or Mojave deserts in the states. Key locations being death valley or the grand canyon.
He follows the skills of the Apache in one of my favorite episodes, think that’s the Sonoran?
which ones would you recommend of his?

Is that a young Jim Turner (ex Boss of the RAF Red Arrows) at 9:56 doing his survival training!
Limited food/water and limited survival gear. its infrared light to enable the nightvision camera to shoot images.
24:30
Only 24 hours? Try doing a three week course.
So you can heat sea water and capture the steam and its drinkable? Does that mean there isn't ANY salt in it or not?
star navigation seems like one of those things that seems so trivial and too complex to bother with, but you just need it anyway.
furseisekilulz Basic celestial nav isn't complex at all. You only need to know a couple of methods.
+Rudolph Walker more complex than you make it sound and most people can't navigate with a map and a gas never mind stars
