No wonder it was painful. . .we comb and work the hair in sections. If it's too tangled conditioner helps. Moisture helps,
I had already worked in sections before I was combing it like that and my hair was well moisturized too😊

Before the haters come I have a lot of empathy for you. People talk alot about the appearance of natural hair and embracing it. But not enough about the physical pain that comes with it. Yes you could've section your hair and use detangler but its still time consuming and the pain will still be there. Not everybody has the time or wants to use their valuable time to do all that

I honestly believe your natural hair was perfect, if you would had consistently had a hair routine your hair texture would had changed and been very manageable and you'd love it because once you perm you don't get your natural hair texture back from what I think. But as long as you're happy with your results that's all that matters
