Kai Sotto is a Filippino professional basketball player whose dream is to be the first Pilipino-born NBA player. He came close to achieving that dream in the recent NBA draft as he tried out for several teams, but in the end, he went undrafted. However, this 7 foot 2 giant who can both protect the rim and shoot 3 pointers hasn’t given up. Instead, he’s taken the criticism and things he needs to improve in stride and is slowly chipping away at them in the NBL. As Sotto improves his game, there is a likely chance that he will end up dawning a NBA jersey as every team is looking for a Sotto type in the modern system.

Kai will shine in the next Fiba tournaments and this is his pathway into cracking the NBA. What he is lacking is time on court with team members willing to pass him the ball to show what he can do so scouts can properly scout him. We have seen glimpses in the NBL but not enough court time and playing in a system which does not utilize a center does not showcase his true potential.

@@emersongarcia2179 Kobe P. And Kai Sotto are very different, Kobe P. Was average who could dunk while Kai S. Was actually ranked in America while at the TSF. Why so much hate? Kid is still young and has skill, he has a big dream of the NBA not everyone gets in, but I think he has enough especially at 7'2, he is a good rim protector and could easily be a backup center.

@@emersongarcia2179 It's not about acceptance. The NBA loves international talent. Yao Ming being in the NBA has made them billions of dollars. If an international player has the talent and exposure, they will happily sign them and watch the money roll in. Sotto has the exposure, if he develops his talent he will make an NBA team a lot of money.... I talk about money a lot because that's what it's always about. A Filipino star would be very lucrative financially for the NBA. Being accepted by Americans is pretty easy when you're stuffing their pockets with cash, just saying... I wish him luck. More international talent is great for basketball, and can even provide the issues important to people of various countries a bigger platform.

I think he’s very talented. The coach is definitely ruining Kai’s game by not playing him more minutes. Just like tonights game vs Melbourne he played 17 minutes with 15 pts 7 rebs and couple of blocks but they didn’t play him at 4th. He’s gonna be really good in the NBA. I am optimistic about him making the NBA probably next season since he’s already a UFA. 💯🔥💪🏿

Once you enter the nba draft, you can't be drafted again. Kai already entered the nba draft in 2022 and went undrafted. He can't enter again.

If a team is patient enough to actually develop him, DEFINITELY. 36ers just made him a little stronger but other skills were not developed. Because of this and his FIBA experiences, he's better physicality than Victor or Chet (for now, of course).
He's a low risk, high reward kind of investment.
I think they would invest in him because NBA teams are looking for big men especially the Golden State Warriors. It took Giannis 8 years to develop his body and game now, Porzingis in 3 years. Nothing is impossible for this kid.

I like Coldplay but they're far from my idol. Kobe isn't smart nor as hardworking nor as patient as Kai in basketball. During that age, Kobe is all about dunking. Plus, a mobile 7footer is always a good prospect

Worth noting that compared to wenbanyaba, kai is just 20 years old kid and honing his skills against grown, skilled and stronger men in nbl australia and putting up decent numbers. even better stats if he was given more playing time.

The NBA is a different league very very physical. He needs to build more muscle mass to compete. He is still young, so hopefully he can keep the injuries to a minimum specially with someone that long. Good luck.

I hope it works out for him. The strength can come, but the lateral movement at only 20 is concerning. He has to be able to do at least one thing really well. Hopefully he can develop his skills.
Brogdon won ROY in the NBA at 24 years old. Kai stil has a lot of time. Sure, the hype is slowing down, but there’s no doubt that he is getting back to his TSF self now that he is a starter and has a lot more minutes than what he used to have.

That's what I'm thinking. Most ppl think Kai is Overrated, when the fact he's not even in top 60 players in ESPN, how's that overrated? The one who's overrated is Dieng who gets drafted by OKC in the first round, and also the 2nd picked Cher holmgren, how can you used a guy if he's not healthy? No matter how good you are, if you are not healthy and injury prone due to his thin frame size, he's useless to the team.

Totally agree with you on what to improve first. His back to the rim movement. He has to be able to really move his defender back, for that to happen he needs mass. Wembanya looks like added muscles but still needs mass. He has to be able to bully people back to the rim so that his dunk or layup would be a gimme. Absent that, he has to improve his fakes around the basket. His mindset has to be more and I mean MORE aggressive.

@@willylalata8559 yes possibly but he is a few years off atm. Currently in the NBL his defence is suspect. Pick and roll he gets lost at times and 1 on 1 players get past him at will.
In all honestly he would need some serious development in the NBL to have a chance and didn't go for the Euroleague, NCAA and G-League Ignite offers he had but I have optimism for him and his career

Should’ve just played got the G league Ignite. Could’ve had a foot in the door In the NBA and not in this weird limbo playing oversees. Weirdly didn’t even play in the summer league was was baffling considering he had connections to multiple teams.

That was an accurate scouting report on Kai. Scoring and shooting are not an issue. It’s his slow 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th…….steps and his lack of strength that stands out. He seems to tire easily as if needing an inhaler. I wish him the best tho as he seems like he wants it, unlike the better prospect in Kobe Paras. Kai seems like a nice kid. It’s easier to get in the nba today.
I agree with almost everything you said in your post. As I would love to see him in the NBA, he just won’t be able to cut it. Just because he’s a big player, it won’t make his path into the nba that much easier. There are tons of solid players that don’t make the cut… and there are also tons of solid players that are in the nba that gets cut and without contracts and are playing elsewhere, such as in Asia or Europe.
He’s in a good place. Play in Australia. Hone his skills. Make some money and hopefully play in a better league in Europe. He’ll be a solid player there

Kai needs a little more meat and muscle I'd say add some 10-15 more lbs of those. That would give him a dominating stature. Currently, his moves looks very leafy and easy to guard, IMHO.

I am not here to put down Kai Sotto, but many Filipino have a different standard then the rest of the world, let alone the NBA. Filipino ALWAYS measure players from the Philippine WAY higher than even NBA scouting etc. I mean, what ever happened to Kobe Paras? He was compared to Kobe Bryant and a few other NBA great, when Kobe Paras is not even top college players. Anyway, back to Kai Sotto. He is physically weak, he is 20 and I doubt if he has any manager that work him in they gym to put more muscle on that body. Second, he played with leagues and players that is just not good. At 20, he need strength training as much to make him NBA ready. There is a reason why he is not drafted and team that invited him to training did not offer him, let alone, mention him at all. At 7'2, you are either noticed by all, or you are NOT good. In the Philippine, there may be one 7'2, but for the NBA, there are a lot of 7'2 that NEVER ever make it. Filipino need to stop glory potential, Kai Sotto need to work on his physical and game, and he need to find people around him that know the American game instead of play to the Filipino audience. OR ELSE, Kai Sotto will just be another Filipino glorified Koby Paras. Stay TRUTH people.
