I bough 212ish bitcoins in 2010. The dude selling the shoes said never mind he wanted cash. I couldn’t convert it back quick enough so I just brought him cash and left the bitcoin. I lost my laptop and when the price boomed I have been trying to get it ever since. So frustrating
the PRIVATE KEY or seed phrase (or copy or backup) will be more important than the laptop itself

I used Bitcoin to pay for AAA watches on a website that did not accept credit cards as payment. I bought two coins at $965 each ($1900). I pay for my watches left $76 dollars in account. I forgot about the wallet. I heard the news about the prices sky-high but didnt pay attention and wham.. I had money to spend.
Wow I honestly immediately started crying at *High gizmo* on the internet part of honesty. Imagine sacrificing that much for your own firm's success, and being so thrilled to see them all grow. You can't be angry at selling bitcoin early. I had 3 coins I got for 100 per and sold them for 1000 per. No way I would have just held them until the huge spike, especially when you aren't rich and have big bills you can pay off with them.

Played around with bitcoin mining in like 2009, but I think the site that hosted the wallet is gone. Wasn't worth a penny at the time, but bitcoin was something like $25. I think that means I'm out $10 now. I can only dream of the life I could be living.
@Kev j Estimating the growth of my bitcoin in a lost wallet. It's not that I don't have the password anymore, it's that the wallet itself is gone forever.
I think it was $.0016 at the time, but 10 years of astronomical growth make the same BT worth... ~$15 today.

You will never lose your keys if you know how to store them. Obviously, not only on one piece of paper. Store it first in your memory. In case it is too hard, just choose 3 secret places you know you will find it and use a unique method of work scattering that only you will recognize even in the case someone will find the word seed. Just be smart about it. That is how you self-custody. Be your own bank and be smart about it. We learn now what to not do xD

In 1920s there were no regulation on stocks, companies would inflate prices, people would get FOMO and started taking out loans to buy into stocks, but then the companies weren’t having huge enough sales, so they didn’t generate the huge amounts of profit they said it would (maybe because people spent all their money buying stocks, and didn't have extra cash to spend on more goods), so the high stock prices weren’t justified, people started cashing out all at once, market crashed and deflation started the Great depression. SEC was created afterwards to regulate stocks. Around that time the economy also got off the gold standard cuz it wasn’t flexible enough to allow the government to print money to combat deflation in the Great Depression. If Crypto can learn from history that would be great

I'm really confused about what Vice/Motherboard is trying to accomplish with this series. I've watched all 4 episodes of Cryptoland and I don't understand who this is for. They've created an entire series dedicated to crypto because they know people are interested in this. Yet, they consistently choose to only show the negative aspects of it. It's like they're trying to lean into the clicks they can get from crypto while appeasing their audience who I'm assuming is mostly anti-crypto by just showing them more things to validate why they already hate crypto.
But why? The production quality of this series is actually quite good and there's a lack of good crypto content relative to the demand. Instead of trying to play this one foot in, one foot out game. They should took a more balanced, fairer and positive view of crypto, I think that would be a better strategy.
I agree with most of what you say but at the same time I think they are approaching this from the perspective of someone curious whose first instinct might be of skepticism due to all the negative stuff that has happened with it (which is also very important).
Really enjoying this series so far. Motherboard becoming my fav Vice channel for sure. It's funny how Bitcoin is supposed to be so secure yet every single day I see another article how another platform was hacked for millions lol. Anyways, still very interesting. It's like the new internet.

Bitcoin the network/protocol/technology is not the same as a platform or business operating with it. The shitshow is happening on the latter, the network stands as secure as ever. How people interact with it by trusting on third parties to help them with it is where the problems are at. This is where regulation can fix a lot of the issues we currently see.
