What is Anamorphic? - Samples of the anamorphic look

  • Filmmakers and audiences alike have grown up with the uniquely cinematic anamorphic look and associate it with the emotional impact of big-screen movies. The sheer width and clarity of the format, its shallow depth of field, the way it handles out of focus backgrounds and flares, all of these have been burned into the subconscious of cinema-goers for over half a century.

I always knew anamorphic was a process where a squeezed image was placed on film to maximize the space used, then projected through a special lens to correct the squeeze later on for display. But I had NO idea about these types of imperfections being associated with that process. Those imperfections really create that professional movie look that we've been seeing for the last 50 years. Incredible! I learned something new today =]

Hi Ceb, if you look at the image starting at 1:42 - you see the wooden dock above the two swimmers - it bends across the screen. Same thing with the top of the wall at 1:48 where normally this would be straight. Hope this helps!

Reminds me, Anamorphic look has maybe something related to religion.
U destroy an image, then u bring it back to life. I'm not that aware to tell which religion this relates to... Some glass powered process involved... not only imagery, God !

I watched The Mummy 1 & 2, which are both shot on anamorphic, but I don't get an anamorphic feel. They seem to feel like they're shot spherical but framed for cinemascope.

Now understanding what the effects of an anamorphic lense have on the image (flares, distortion, etc), I'm wondering what is usually the draw & appeal to using an anamorphic lense? Is it the wider expanse of space included in frame, or other reasons too?

Because of the squeeze ratio an anamorphic lens captures way more space in with than spherical, so there's a wider angle of view in width. But in height it stays the same. So if you have a close up of someone with anamorphic, it's almost like you are shooting on a wider lens with the amount of space you capture, but the person still looks like he/she's been shot with a longer lens.

other than that cinema aspect ratio, i guess it's "another artistic side". like the angle of 50mm vs 28mm. different "story"

From what I've been hearing, it creates more of an organic look. Anamorphic lenses give you more of a film look, as oppose to a polished look that digital cinema does. There's also a greater separation between the subject and the back round as oppose to DSLR camera etc.

when the same process (lenses etc) for recording and projecting is used, where do these "imperfections" like the lense flair come from ? is that because the lenses are only like 99,9% the same !?

Camera lenses and projection lenses are *never* the same - anamorphic or not.
Theatre projection lenses are made for each particular theatre's throw (distance from the projection room to the screen) and the size of the screen. Motion picture camera lenses need to have camera mounts on the rear (usually PL: Panavision), apertures, threaded fronts for filters or other accessories, etc.
For an anamorphic projection lens, another consideration (and cost) is the compression ratio that has to be expanded. Theatre owners always balked at the conversion cost and would usually only foot the bill when they knew a blockbuster film was in the works.

Can someone explain where they are seeing distortion in the distortion examples?

The shot with the wooden bridge. The lines should be straight but they are curved.

    Good resume but...
Anamorphic is a lot more than that!!!
100% Optical process, two kind of lenses in one, complete use of academic aperture, no wide angle lenses (not necessary), more expensive due size and technology, Squeeze and unsqueeze, Cinemascope projection is a must... and so on. Anyway, I love it.

you know how annoying those lens flares are? Additionally, when i see all those lens flares in the theatre all i can think of is how the cameraman/cinematographer is yelling "HEY LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME" and it breaks my concentration on the film.

Anamorphic is heavily overrated for DP's looking to differentiate themselves within a pool of sameness. They remind me of DJ's using commodore 64 SID chips to make unique sounds. If you like old Godzilla moves with weird curved distortion, or 70's style kung fu movies ie wu tang clan, shoot Anamorphic in 2018.

P S I like what you said and I agree with you on the point that it is a pool of sameness. But then what do you suggest? How does one differentiate oneself?
