In the eighth episode of Fargo's fifth season Dot (Juno Temple) returns to Roy's (Jon Hamm) ranch. Danish Graves (Dave Foley) travels to Stark County to interfere with Roy's election and learns that Dot is being held captive nearby. Danish makes the mistake of thinking he can negotiate with the Sheriff and pays the ultimate price.
Ole Munch (Sam Spruell) is after Gator (Joe Keery), and Indira (Richa Moorjani) ditches her husband after she catches him cheating. Then she agrees to start working for Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh).

We lost a good one this week. After I finished recording this I came across an interview Sean T. Collins did with Dave Foley for Vulture where he offers a few insights about the character www.vulture.com/article/fargo-dave-foley-danish-graves-blanket-ending-interview.html It seems like Roy has crossed the line that will ensure that he has to be taken out. While there will be a ton of fireworks in the process I kind of belive Dot will keep her promise to him. Let me know what you think.

I think about the conversation closer between Roy and Munch where Munch says something akin to there being only so many words they have left. I think it might happen that both Munch and Roy go down the pit together. I think there’s going to be a lot of bodies before this season ends.

Jon hamm is an incredible actor. Guy just gets more and more despicable with every scene .

I can't help but think Hamm should have chosen more villain roles before now. Some of the best performances come from good actors playing against type.

This is not a diss to Jon Hamm..but I feel the writing let him down. His character pales in comparison to V.M Varga and Lorn Malvo.
One note on Karen. She is an abuse survivor too, I doubt she loves Roy. Her aggression towards Dot could be a mix of “I get the abuse because you escaped” and also making sure Karen herself doesn’t get it. She knew Roy was violently mad because of the debate. She puts Dot in his sights to save herself from the pain
100% - her behaviour towards Dot is totally in keeping with someone suffering abuse. I thought it was really well observed. We've seen how badly Roy treats her in the Trump speech/haircut scene.
I agree but also disagree. I don't think Karen is that smart to layer that thought process. I do however think her actions stem from her own abuse experiences, but more in a Stockholm Syndrome sort of way. My belief is that she drank the kool-aid that Roy was serving. She believes in him so deeply and enjoys being Mrs Sheriff of the land, that she is willing to personally dish out the same abuse. She had zero empathy for Dot and seemed annoyed and jealous. She believes in the Trump rhetoric and the curse she spoke of is car after the election. She's been fully brainwashed and is fully on Tillman's side. I think she'd follow Roy down the well before trying to escape.
@@jennifergilmore2038exactly how I see it. She is annoyed and jealous about his obsession over Dot. She does not have the ability to be empathetic she’s traumatized.
Yeah Karen seems pretty stupid. Her Father is also someone like Roy so hopefully they all get what's coming to them. I doubt anything happens to them though just to not give fans what they want.

The debate scene with the other three Roy Tillmans was brilliant and had me LMAO. Reminded me of something that Saul Goodman would concoct in the BB/BCS worlds.
I'm sure I've read about someone doing this for real in an election. It's a dirty trick! In the UK, a smaller scale version of this is political parties printing their campaign material on another party's election colours - some Conservative candidates were printing their material on green flyers (the colour of the Green Party) in order to disguise the fact that they were actually a conservative candidate.

I disagree Saul Goodman could never have pulled this one off, we could have seen it coming with Saul. Danish did the most simple and remarkable plays. He used the Sheriff Tilman against himself..
This is the best scenes I have ever seen on TV. I have replayed this scene 20 times. It is awesome and deserves an Oscar.
@@nabstavus1289 If you only know Saul from Breaking Bad, I can see why you might think that, but if you watch Better Call Saul it’s clear he could easily have come up with this and pulled it off.
Danish's pride might have led to his downfall, but also his feeling for Dot was a weak spot too. He didn't want to chance Lorraine not approving and he also was fearful that time could run out for Dot. That tiny bit of humanity....

I'm not sure it was pride... but knowing time was of the essence & playing the only card he had! He must have known it couldn't work... but I think he MAY have left a clue behind to save Dot!
I think Danish was (justifiably!) a little puffed up after his success with the Roy Tillmans and he overestimated any leverage he might have in saving A-hole Roy from losing the election. He never saw the evidentiary photos of what Roy did to Dot; if he had, he probably would have realized how dangerous Roy would be after being humiliated in such a public way.

I agree. Danish was becoming a favorite for me too. Specially impressed with Dave Folly dramatic acting as he is mostly known for comedic roles. Like most every actor picked for Fargo, they somehow do a way better job than you would think they could. Take Chris Rock for instance.
I've been told by more than one actor--If you can handle comedy, you can do anything.
Chris Rock season was the worst by far of all the seasons.
Having watch/loved KITH, Dave Foley's mannerisms, tone of voice ( even though his character Danish is a technically serious) is subtle and nuanced and made me giggle...the scene at the bank, killed me...
Poor Danish! I really started to like him! And I think he‘s Wayne‘s real father.
Dave Foley did a great job with the role.
I really hoped I would see more of Danish and Lorraine together. I think they were together.
Oh GREAT call ! Yeah Wink would be wasted. And there was that sene when Lorraine told Danish to fill up the Porsche you're going to ND and she tenderly slips her arm through Danish's ... hmmm
I don't think so he behaves a lot like his father and nothing like Danish.
So many of the characters have a sense that nothing will happen to them - their hubris becomes their downfall. Lester had this in season 1 and Walter White in Breaking Bad.
Ole Munch has been my favourite character in season 5, as I've been rooting for him strangely.
I think Danish was making his own decision in that moment and didnt want permission
When Danish was leaving the debate, I noticed that the sign over the door was "Comity Room". I laughed because "comity" means "civility", especially after the sheriff punched out a reporter and the host!
"Here's a question: if you're so smart... then why are you so dead?"
Roy’s walk to the shed is among the most chilling shots in the entire series.
Still hasn’t left me days later.

The building of suspense with that long walk reminded me of a Hitchcock movie.
I thought he'd never get there!
It reminded me of Lalo's angry march at the end of Better Call Saul's fifth season finale.
And his long walk accompanied by an amazing sinister version of Toxic that flipped the meaning of the lyrics.

This episode continued to set the stage for a climax of epic proportions. I can't wait to see how Noah arranges the trap door to open at the last minute to engulf these scoundrels. Love your commentary and easter eggs I missed.

Blankets covers things. Roy’s blanket is pulled away & we see all of his evilness. Gator, we see his depth of vulnerability. Graves, he uncovered his courage - blind courage as he thought he could ‘manage’ Roy. Nope.

This episode had an effect on me as well. It took me an hour to pull myself together after the episode went off.

This episode was amazing. Can’t believe Danish was dumb enough to just stroll up on the Tillman Ranch like that. Hubris.
Dot saw them dispose of the body and will be able to show the Feds, the last laugh may be Danish's
I just couldn't wrap my head around why on earth Danish rolled up to Roy's after we have seen Danish be pretty competent all season long. I just had a hard time buying he would be so boneheaded after all the humiliation he put Roy through... which he even freely tells Roy was all him!

I initially thought Danish was thinking this is an opportunity to impress his boss by taking the initiative and bringing Dot home. And Dot would be back under the control of her MIL.
And didn't he ignore as call from her on his way into Roy's?
PP made a good point about Danish having more empathy for Dot.
He knew there was no time to do anything else! & Roy was just small-minded enough to think he had thus outsmarted Danish! Frankly... I think this was a stunt to help Dot get found!

I just realised the scene where Roy shoots Danish, that it looks like Roy has devil horns due to the skull behind him.

The highlight of this episode was seeing old Munch in the rear view mirror of Gator. 😊 The rest of the episode was very grim. Graves, Lorraine one-eyed attorney: if ever someone sped to his own end, it's him. His hubris got him killed. He walks into the pit with a hungry lion, and thinking himself so smart that HE could certainly reason with a savage lion! Graves didn't realize what an abnormal animal Roy is.

Kidnapped her twice. TWICE. (Once in front of a State Trooper). Kidnapped (attempt) her husband. Threatened the banker's life. (Banker believed him).
He felt that money could solve everything. That’s why he didn’t feel threatened because he felt he was looked at as a valuable asset to everyone
@@deedunn1989 Agreed! Like Lorraine, Graves thinks/thought in dollars and cents: anything and anyone can be bought bags of money. Roy isn't motivated or controlled by dollars and cents. He thinks in terms of brute force and power, only using money to hire people like Munch. His obsession with Dot will be his undoing, much like Gustavo Fring's obsession with Hector Salamanca led to his brutal death. I predict Roy will meet a brutal death.
I think something we see is the women in Roy's life will do anything to direct Roy's rage away from themselves. Linda set Dot up and Karen I think knew one way or the other after that debate someone is catching a BAD beating and immediately directed him toward Dot using her as a shield.
Karen belongs with Roy -- she's his female equivalent. She's hateful ... wouldn't mind seeing her under the windmill.
I think that's the implication with Karen which I imagine is pretty normal. There's a great shot where the focus is on him in the front seat but you can see her shift her eyes to check his reaction even though she's out of focus. Linda is a little harder to say since we only know what we know about her through Dot's memories.
@@PetePeppers1 I took the line about her life since she left Roy being a dream is a deliberate attempt to uncouple memory and experience from reality. Along with Danish Grave's "We have our own reality" and the entire Camp Utopia dream, it feels like we're back to Varga in season 3 with his disinformation. Graves's ploy at the election debate reminded me of Varga's tricks both in terms of the Stussy killer and the multiple Varga doubles when he meets Nicki Swango in the hotel lobby. It's a real theme throughout Fargo and fits nicely with the false "this is a true story..." that we always open with. It feels like a theme of our age
Dot THINKS Linda set her up. The scene where she realizes what really happened is another heartbreaking beat in this episode.
@@markfisher7962I agree, and I can’t help but feel some sympathy for Karen, too. She may be trying to keep her daughters out of Roy’s sights as targets for his anger.
9:25 can we talk about this Scene where Karen is out of focus in the backseat? Amazing shot.
They make her look like a demon at the end, as she plays kinda the dark side of Roys mind.
While also being out of focus.
Maybe a representation of how Roy barely cares about her at all.
Roy is the most evil villain in Fargo history. Worse than any Lorne Malvo or Mike Milligan or Gaetano. None of those others would torture multiple helpless women for years or repeatedly assault a teenage girl. I cant wait until he gets his consequences.
Danish has becomes Doctor Senator. Another great character watsted! RIP 😥

First to comment after JUST FINISHING this episode! I hate how Danish went in without any backup or at least with a firearm....WHAT WAS HE THINKING? Also Munch in the back of Gator's car???? Whoooooaaaaa!!!! When it comes to Roy, one famous line comes to mind...in the words of Kanye West: " NO ONE MAN SHOULD HAVE ALL THAT POWER!" The toxic song cover was EPIC BTW!!!!
Roy summarized it perfectly: "If you are so smart, then how are you so dead?"
Words are his weapon, but yeah.
Damn right before he shot Danish his head lines up with the horns on the wall behind him, giving Devil symbolism. 1:30
9:47 TALK ABOUT THIS WALK/shot! the perspective change to the windmill. With Toxic playing. Lyrcis like " im slipping under". After finding out that mass grave is there.
Demostrating that Roy may wind up in a similar grave, thanks to his obsession with Dot.
Also shows that Dot probbably saw ranch hands "around" that windmill, or even Linda talking about it in some way.
But she would have been so young then that she may not have understood. Or the trauma made her forget the specifics.
But explains why in the dream the windmill is such an important landmark to her subconcious.
Fantasy ending: Munch takes out Gator and Dot takes out Tillman.
Sioux Falls all over again! Wonder if they'll ref Waco or other American compound crisis's. Bald Move found it odd that Graves would be so entitled towards his own armed goons, but at the same time it's too interesting- his lead up to negotiating for Dot was more compelling for me than Roy's toxic walk. I think Season 5 clicked for me 500 years ago.

It’s been a great series drawing on the rich and unique cross section of themes that the setting evokes once again yet somehow feeling new each time. And the added contemporary politics satire is done with such a light touch that it avoids being preachy. Strong female leads and other underdogs, the class system, wealth, history reverberating at near supernatural levels. No other show quite like it. Despite clear inspirations from and awareness of other contemporary shows.
Poor Dot. I want her to get back to her family.

Yeah, Jon Hamm’s character running a David Koresh -esque commune has a creep factor. Dave Foley from Kids in the Hall makes me feel old. 😢
What I don't get is, doesn't Witt, as a State Trooper, have superior jurisdiction over any apparent illegal actions committed by Roy?
He was out numbered in both situations. Help was more 10 mts away……the thugs were already there & ready to rumble.

@@pamsullivan3274 For me, definitely. I was born the same year as "Bobby" and while my father wasn't in advertising, we lived in the suburbs of NY and many commuted. My parents and their friends lived in a much more affluent world than their parents (They were all children of WWII and the Great Depression), even as they faced incredible pressures to conform/succeed. And yes, a lot of drinking and divorce. I didn't understand that time when I was young, but through Mad Men and Ken Burns' "Vietnam," I know more.

The "if you're so smart why are you so dead" line was so stupid, stellar episode aside from that.
It speaks to Roy's character though... He is very blunt and not necessarily proper about how he goes about things. I thought the line was great in that respect.
As soon as Danish ignored that call from Lorraine, we knew he was done for. I can't believe he went to the ranch without consulting Lorraine... & Then he had the hubris to brag about creating the other 3 Tillmans. Bro!

The idea of hubris didn't become part of my lexicon until Lester challenged Malvo in the elevator in season 1..."aces!". It is on full destructive display this season and unfortunately all around 'merica in recent times.😤

I'm reaching here, but blankets were used to hide actions in this episode. The reveal of where the bodies are being hidden was like pulling back a blanket.
The fact that Noah Hawley can make any minor character feel ultra menacing or just an embodiment of cool really speaks to his abilities as a writer... Danish is a great minor character and Dave Foley did a great job playing him... Too bad Danish thought Roy was just another Vivian or someone who would actually react and respond with intellectual reason.
Blanket is the name of the baby Michael Jackson held over the balcony.

Yeah.... I'm basically done with pre-season trailers... and pre-episode look-aheads. They contain way too many spoilers. For instance, in the trailer for the series, there was a shot of Ole Munch Axe's the old woman's son. I LOVED that scene soooo much (because of the throwback to the movie), but it was ruined for me because I saw it in the season trailer.

All she had to do was fold up the futon frame she was handcuffed to, pick it up and walk out lmao 🤣
I've noticed throughout this series how badly Gator always wants for people to respect and fear him, but no ever does.

No mention of the horns when Roy stands up from his desk?
I think the question to whether Dot kills Roy is answered in the conversation Munch has in the bathtub with mama munch. I’m not going to type the whole conversation. Or address “now a days every where you look are kings. They think there freedom should be free” it’s what he says before and after that are more telling. I’m paraphrasing, but it’s when he talks about freedom being a potato but in order to have that potato people have to die. After the king’s freedom part. Munch says freedom always means death. Me or you. And right now. Dot is literally handcuffed and imprisoned. Roy won’t be free until he kills or breaks Dot, because it challenges his whole identity of who he is and his belief system that allows him to justify all the horrible things he does. One of those beliefs that women were subservient to men. So it comes down to Dot’s freedom of Roy vs Roy’s freedom of Dot. And we know Dot doesn’t die. And if we follow Munch, whose character is described as a truthsayer, then Dot can only have her freedom if Roy dies. So I definitely think Dot kills Roy.
Pete, I’d be interested in an analysis of Munch and Gator. Some people say Munch tricked Gator having him kill mama Munich’s real son, so that later Munch could ambush him. I don’t think that’s true. I think Munch was done and had no intention of killing Gator. And although the preview for episode 9 strongly indicates Munch kills Gator out of Revenge for mama munch. I don’t think Munch is about revenge. Otherwise he would have killed Gator a long time ago when Gator ambushed Munch to kill him instead of payment. So I’d really like to figure out what Munich’s character is about and what his role is in the storyline. Maybe by episode 10 recap you might have some time. Many Thanks

Not a bad show at all, but in my opinion the whole story could have been better told in a two hour movie.
I genuinely think Graves knew the odds when he went to the Tillman Ranch! Time was short... & it was a calculated risk! THAT'S why he wouldn't take Lorraine's call... she would have ordered him out! (If you look at Danish's face when he gets out of his car... his expression is 'Welp... This is it!'!)
& Gator would rather believe his Mother is dead... It's better than the thought she just leave him with the abusive Father!

This show has a lot of good actresses and actors really a good show.
Think felt like one of those episodes that sorta moved the plot along, but didn't really have any stand-out moments that I was just in AWE of. The LAST episode, by contrast, "Linda" was my fav of the whole series so far. Here's hoping for a final two that knock it out of the park!

Not to mentioned here at the end Dot drops her accent.kinda shows the real side of her. Which is interesting because we don't know much about her before the Linda "helped her".
She is clearly hyper focused on the family she wants.
But this also demonstrates that deep down she isn't that nice. Especially when. You consider Wittfars partner died because of her. (Also other people dieing that if she just goes to the police early on. None of this happens. ) Tho as we learned she chose not to reveal these Roys actions to protect them and uses it as leverage when she's caught
I'm thinking Roy will be taken out by Gator- maybe to save Dot after all.

The US flag in Sherriff Tillman's study has 38 stars in it - that is, the flag immediately before the Dakotas were admitted as states. I wonder if this is some weird flex by Tillman about how (so he thinks) the Federal government has no authority in his patch?

Seeing the previews for EP09, how do we think Dot gets out ? Does Ole perhaps bust her out (not that he cares at all for Dot) but he would do anything to hurt Roy. The enemy of my enemy kind of thing ...
Ole is my fav. He's the Lorne Malvo of this season.

I'm doubtful that 2 episodes is enuf for us to get to truly enjoy watching Roy try to bulldoze through all the other antagonists to destroy Lorraine -- or die trying. But im hoping they wont disappoint.🤞🏽
