I loved this, Alecia. As a department chair/faculty member, I told my students a story about turning down a position to become campus president. To my surprise, one female African American student said, " I would never turn down that opportunity; that would be lazy." I told her that I saw it as self-care. I had enough of being worked to my core to support someone else's dream. Rest is essential, and we must listen...

“We’re afraid of being caught not being productive.” Yes! An internal trauma by itself. I used to have a white “friend” who couldn’t clean her one bedroom apartment and she had no kids or anything. She even invited friends to help her pack her stuff up stuff. I was thinking I’m not coming over your house to help you pack up your underwear. I have to do my grocery shopping, etc. I have to use my time wisely on the weekend. Needless to say we are no longer friends today. I think she saw people as a pawn to use for her purposes! I don’t think I’ll ever try to make a white friend again. It’s in their DNA. They are okay when you are a sidekick but let you be more successful. They will try to beat you at their own success.

You are right. I was talked about and made fun of. I was constantly explaining what I felt that I deserved because I worked so hard. I was feeling tired and burned out then. However, no was paying me any attention. I was constantly pushed to do more. Now, I am extremely tired. I am working to get more rest and work at a slower pace.

Alecia, thank you for this video. Youve captured my current feelings in this video. I’ve been feeling weary especially professionally. More projects added to my workload, more performing, no addition being added to the team and I am getting tired. It’s crazy being over worked is praised. So today I took the day off and rest and I was beat! Mentally feeling better but these companies will work you to death and not hire anyone else because why pay another salary when they can exploit labor.

    Black women, find your “sit-spot.””
In my child’s nature adventure school, they teach the kids to sit, to sit in a sit-spot. They teach them what to look for when considering a sit-spot. The purpose of the sit spot is to learn to sit and observe nature in one place for longer and longer periods of time. And they assign levels as your reach higher amounts of time you’re able to sit and observe; 5 min, 5 hours, 15 hours. They share their stories around a camp fire about what they were able to observe as their awareness becomes more acute. Can you still yourself long enough to stop buzzing, and finally hear a butterfly flying? That sort of thing. It’s a white dominated space, but all are welcome and we are not the only brown family in the school.
