  • Mercedes mid range family cars of the 1970s and 80s were pretty much untouchable.
    Here Conor and Tomo take a look at their own cars to determine whether the W123 or the W124 stands up better in the present day, and which you should buy if you're considering one of these machines.

    My favourite one is the W210, despite its rusty nature. I find it an even more perfect combination of modern functionality and classic reliability. The CDI engines are perfectly balanced economy, sound, reliability and powerwise. The interior is way more chiseled than the W124 and power windows are for example default. It is slightly bigger, has a more stable suspension, and has an option with factory AUX, which is just a HUGE upgrade. I think these minor improvements weight out the rust issues by large, especially considering that w124 and w123 can get pretty rusty too.

    Great video, lads. I've been daily driving a 1991 300D saloon, so also an NA OM603, but with the 5-speed manual, and honestly I believe the W/S124 are the best classic cars to daily drive. The balance between modernity and old school Mercedes-Benz build quality is just perfect.

    Another great video, thank you.
    I’ve always wanted an S123/4, many years ago I remember being in an S123 mini cab (it was old at the time) very tatty with a loud noise coming from the rear, but despite all of that it rode beautifully and there was just something about it I’ve never felt in another car.

    You should buy w124's while they're cheap over there, because here in Sweden w124's has sky rocketed in price, basically the same as w123's

    It would be nice if MB made rebuild kits, for vacuum pumps for the w123 & w124 again, and body rubbers seals for the same models.

    I live in the states so I get the better 123s and 124s 😂. I got my hands on a 123 Sedan with the 300d and a 124 sedan with the inline-6 turbo diesel. The speed difference is out of this world. And I agree the 124 is underrated.

    Like W123 exterior but like W124 interior. For many years there was local family who had W123 diesel, lemon yellow colour, alway shiny n clean, in good nick. I wouldn't mind having their car, built tough especially here in Australia.

      I have heard the SA and Aus built cars are even a level above the German built ones!

      @@427Motorsports i wouldn't be surprised as Holden brought Opel Senator over here in Australia for under pinning of new Commodore in 78? Holden also had a Kingswood as benchmark, the Opel would fail, the German engineer at time ask Holden workers " where are major freeway roads" Holden workers reply these are major freeway road as yet take car off on country roads. I don't think many overseas people realise that our population is small in country area that could be more 5 to 12 hours away from major cities, Australians couldn't afford cover roads like in Germany, heck our town doesn't have sewerage mains, didn't get electricity until 60's.

    Thanks for another nice vid👍
    But, if you are a hoarder, like myself, you have several wagons - the Universal, S123s and S124s. The 240D could actually be had with a turbo from AMG. They fitted the OM616 with the STT turbo kit.

    Good lads. Nice vid. I'd love one but with the tax down south here it makes a balls of it. I've a 2003 CLK for the last few years and I love it. A great daily.

    The s124s are all ready starting to be hard to find. Clean ones sell quickly and the rest are rust buckets.
    Do yous think the s124 will end up rising to similar prices as the s123?

    • @427Motorsports
      @427Motorsports  3 місяці тому +2

      That's a great question, I do wonder whether the W123s are actually selling for some of the more ambitious asking prices - I suspect not because they tend to be advertised indefinitely.
      For the £15-20k range cars, will a low spec W124 saloon/estate ever be worth that? It's hard to say, I think a good 124 is just as worthy as a good 123 - it'll depend what the market/economy does over the next few years - we'll just have to wait and see if the 124 gets it's Dolmio Day

    You never mentioned the om606 and there power potential and the modification you can do to the w124 chassis

    • @427Motorsports
      @427Motorsports  2 місяці тому

      Yes but we aren’t talking about modified examples, and we never got the OM606 in turbo form over here so really power wise there’s not much difference between the 606 and 603 in this country, standard.

      Both the S123 and S124 came with manuals. The only models where you could only get an auto was the 300TD Turbodiesels for both of them, so the OM617 Turbo and OM603 Turbo.
