Not going to comment on the EU, but this item from a 1994 edition of BBC Breakfast, covers an ill-thought consequence of the ‘Hot Services Directive’ - thankfully common sense prevailed!

Electric trains are better. Cleaner. Faster. Age of steam in the UK is dead.

Outdated and polluted way to travel, electronic or diesel trains are much better.
