    I'm a big fan of helicals, they always outperform my small patches. I have made over a dozen varieties and find the best overall balance is around 4.5 turn.
    They are very tricky to tune properly, and it's very obvious once you do it, that's where the high price comes from. It simply cannot be done on a
    mass production line and requires a lot of time to get right, yet tuned or untuned they will still look identical - until you use them.
    Great test review Mario, thanks.

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  5 років тому +2

      thanks for your experience. I saw that cheap helicals can be really bad - even if they look no different than the expensive ones (I think I had one in 2018 video from hobbyking, dirt cheap).
      Also: I think the lower turn ORT 6.5 performed better than the CWL 7.5
      and I'm not 100% sure if I count the turns correct :)

      this time I didnt chech the power output of the TX.
      But also: this time it was ~7°C and windy - so maybe the TX was cooled enough to have a quite constant output.
      On the bench I found a good correlation between heat and degradiation of RF power. But it took 40 or 50°C to see a decrease of RF power...

      hi, thanks. the newer (back then) lollis were just made cheaper - that's why their performance dropped.
      Newer products are not always an improvement (of course marketing always suggests this) sometimes they are just cheaper to make.
      Of like with the DJI cams: because some chips are not available - other ones have to be used (but those other cams are not as good as the OG DJI cams :)

    Love your testing! Can I advise a small tweak to your testing methodology that will help give you larger # spreads on your omni’s and truely show which are better? Space your RX at a larger distance to the point where the worst antenna of your batch is showing 81-82 in the null zone, rather than no antenna in the null zone distance. This greater separation (might be 10m+) will give you much more accurate and easily rateable rankings for which antennas are truly better than the others. Thanks again Schim!!

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  5 років тому

      I agree. That's what I meant, I'd like to have way more time for such test session...
      For your suggestion I need to know which antenna is the worst performer and set the distance according to this. Maybe I should make 2 groups: omnis at closer range and directional antennas in their own class where the distance is a few hundret meters (even when using only 1mw transmit power).
      thanks for the feedback - I like the challenge :)

    • @halflife82
      @halflife82 5 років тому

      Totally!! That’s exactly what I would do. Max-our your poorest omni for range @ 81db and then run all your omni tests from that point. Then have a second test group just for directional antennas at a range that also maxes out the “worst” directional antenna @ 1mW.
      Great testing Shim! I wish I had some extra Axii 2 & Axii micros to send you to test alongside those lollipops as it’s interesting how every revision of lollipop appears to have slightly worse range. Haha. For omni’s my personal favorite on the goggles are the pagoda 2 (open air) and the VAS Ion/Minion. For patches the TrueRC Air2 (pepperbox) for the performance and the menaceRC patches for their size.
      Thanks again Shim! Love your videos & testing!

    After thoroughly studying your excellent Excel spreadsheet, it is kind of amazing that none of the omni antenna's are really any different in performance from one another! Sure, the old blue Aomway gets a score of -58, but none of the others are much worse than -60 !! I guess the ORT 6Lobe SPW is slightly better, but not enough to pay it's price since I have a perfectly good blue Aomway.
    I find the difference between any of the omni's to be pretty insignificant, don't you think? (except for the Thor and some other old ball ones that aren't that popular).
    I also found it weird that the further we get into the Foxeer lollipop line, 1, 2, and 3...the WORSE they get! Course the best is the first one, and you can't buy it anywhere! lol D'oh!
    I think I'll stick with the blue Aomway and the Triple Feed Patch 9.4dB on the other side. That one appears to be the BEST BUY of any of these, at under 11 bucks!

      I remeber that I paid 64€ for the circular wireless antennas back a few years ago. and even this money wasnt wasted - they gave me good confidence while flying further out an expensive model...

  • @frankyfrench5279
    @frankyfrench5279 5 років тому +1

    The only problem in this test is that it is done for 1 frequency only. the 5.8ghz band is pretty wide. A well tuned antenna on it's center freq, can give way more gains than a wide band antenna. A well tuned antenna but used at the wrong frequency, than were it is tuned for could perform bad, while it can be a great antenna. So if you want to to get the best antenna, buy a custom tuned antenna for your frequency. The custom tuning and measuring and small tolerances is what good antennas makes expensive.

    • @frankyfrench5279
      @frankyfrench5279 5 років тому +1

      Also because tolerances are very small, it is also questionable if factory made generic untuned antennas are peaking at the same frequency, or if there can be significant differences between different antennas.

    I fly but don't understand antenna specs. Based on this list, what would be an optimal set up for flying in slightly wooded areas with a few trees. Some may be thick with a lot of leaves while others would have a lot of dry branches. I use an IRC Omni and IRC patch on the goggles, with an IRC Tramp vtx with a Foxeer Lollipop antenna. Sometimes the video breakup can be crazy. As long as I keep the quad in front of me, most of the time the video is fine. Also, I'm not using a capacitor if that means anything.

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  5 років тому

      do you use RapidFire on your goggles? that could help alot :)
      also if you do: make sure RapidFire is calibrated (mine wasnt and my breakup was worse than it should have been).
      IRC omni could be swapped for example to this Foxeer Pagoda pro on the long cable - it was quite good from the numbers.
      IRC 8dbi patch is pretty good - not sure if another patch would give you better results.
      maybe consider the 3turn ORT helix - it looked really good!

    • @amen_ra6926
      @amen_ra6926 5 років тому

      @@Rcschim No, I use the La Forge diversity module. However, I'll look into Foxeer Pagoda. I was also considering the Luminier AXii Omni and their patch with a matching omni on the quad. The one on the goggles would have an extended cable. The helix may be an option for the patch. I may have to try combinations with a higher output to see what gets me the least breakup.

  • @rcrdps8144
    @rcrdps8144 5 років тому

    Just can't keep your mouth shut about the DJI. :D It's just that good. NOT hype folks!
    When comparing the helicals, you state that the 6 turn isn't that much better than the 3 turn. However, there is 4db of difference. That's actually quite huge since 3db is double. I know you'd probably get hazed for doing it, but it might be helpful to throw all of the numbers in a db-to-mw converter just so you can see them on a linear scale.
    In one of the VAS videos, he talks about the shape of the helical polarization not being as circular as he'd like. So I'm wondering if the VAS antennas may excel in a more noisy environment, whereas the helicals are better at long range where you generally keep line-of-sight.
    I definitely want to try the ORT 3 turns through heavy trees. But with DJI,.. I need 4 of them,. so it will have to be when I have money burning a hole in my pocket. Right now I'm running VAS SkyHammers.

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for your feedback - db to mw in a seperate column in XLS sheet - good Idea - will do.
      Good points about that few db - sometimes we tend to forget this...
      The thing is: RF theory and it's practical application are extremly complex with so many factors. Tests like this here always have to be extremly oversimplified - and only pick one aspect of the antenna.
      I'm quite sure that the VAS antenna HAS TO BE good. I just didnt use it in a way yet so it would convince me :) So for guys like me - the allround antennas are for sure better...
      Not sure if I want 4 helicals on that DJI goggles - it makes you look damn stupid again - whereas the current stock antennas look kinda cool :)

    • @rcrdps8144
      @rcrdps8144 5 років тому

      @@Rcschim Haha,.... embrace the geekiness! I'll admit, 4 helicals on the goggles does give me pause. But I've also used the VAS cyclops,.....which is extremely ugly.
      So yeah, I have a fairly decent collection of VAS antennas. My thoughts are that the patches are only slightly above average, but the omnis seem to be quite good. I'm currently running 4 SkyHammer's on the goggles, and 2 Minion Pro's on the quad. This setup seems to keep me locked at 25Mbit's for 95% of my flight paths. It's not long distance though. Just lots of obstacles.
      The stock antennas do seem to do quite well if you're not really pushing the limits, which we don't most of the time. One thing several of us found, was that the stock antennas are barely circular polarized. We've switched out the quad antennas for RHCP, and left the stock antennas on the goggle, and there is no difference. Some think the stock antennas are better than many of the omnis, but my testing with aftermarket omnis shows a definite improvement.

    Can I use a 50 ohm antenna as the dummy load on the triple feed patch? 50 ohms of impedance is 50 ohms right?

    • @romankalinchuk2750
      @romankalinchuk2750 4 роки тому +1

      You can make a dummy load with a 50ohm resistor. Hooking an antenna to it wont be exactly 50ohm and will vary as you move things near it or if metal is nearby. It will also, being an antenna, radiate the energy that you don't want radiated. That dummy load is for absorbing energy received in the other polarization which could come from a different polarized antenna or from a reflected signal from your vtx which could interfere with the signal coming directly. A reflected circularly polarized signal swaps polarity. The antenna will work fine without the dummy load, but not optimally.
