      Once, a Norrtåg train broke down for more then two hours on the Luleå and Kiruna track in the middle of winter and the outside temperature at the time was -40°! Now that is scary! 🥶 They were very lucky that locals nearby offered them coffee and blankets to cope.

    It appears that no matter the country, there's an extremely narrow range of outside temperature where a Flixtrain ride isn't a form of self-imposed torture. When it's not freezing you'll be sweating your balls off thanks to no A/C onboard. This makes you choose between a sauna and going deaf from the open windows when zooming through long tunnels at 200km/h.
    That being said, one of my mates took a Flixtrain last week and they reached his stop 20 minutes too EARLY! Deutsche Bahn could never

      To be fair, that also occasionally happens with DB, but they will then wait on one of their intermediate stops for the schedule departure time and not just set off because they can. Imagine you would get to the train station 5 mins before scheduled departure time, and the announcement board would happily tell you that the train is already gone because it was a few mins early today 🤣

      True! Especially because you can’t open Flixtrains windows fully anymore, and they cramp too many people in there.
      I frequently travel by train in the Czech Republic, and there I don’t mind the old carriages, actually on the contrary. You can fully open the window, stand next to the window and feel the breeze in your face. And during the pandemic even have a quick break without a mask. Those carriages don’t get too hot in my opinion, as long as the windows are open.
      I also arrived early on DB once. :D

      Edit: btw, when I was in the Netherlands in October, you guys already did not wear masks in supermarkets etc. and I found that super weird and way too early. And just weeks later the Netherlands went into a lockdown… I prefer wearing a mask than a lockdown tbh.

    Sweden looks beautiful but I was cold just watching! Brrrr!
    Honestly, if 4 of the 5 toilets are out of order, the train shouldn't be running. That's ridiculous.
    The interior of your departure station and exterior of the arrival station were stunning.
    Thanks for taking us along, Dylan. See you on Friday!

    • @BubblesBub434

      I do think it's a bit less bad than it sounds though concerning the toilets. These german wagon cars generally have toilets in every car, often two per car (one on either side) though I guess these specific 60s/70s IR coaches "only" had one (or they took the other one out when refurbishing) per wagon.
      Compare it to many modern EMU sets and you suddenly stack up only slightly short with just 1 out of 5 toilets working. Many stadler FLIRT or KISS configurations only have one or two per entire unit, and more and more operators are using them for medium distance in Europe. In the Netherlands, the flagship 'Koploper' stock used on long distance lines only has one toilet per three carriage EMU, often it breaks down and you have to then switch to a coupled EMU at the next station. In Japan there's medium distance lines feeding into commuter lines in big cities that still use the same commuter stock, meaning no toilet at all for sometimes 1.5-2hr trips.
      I think a reasonable number of toilets for medium or long distance trains should be at least 1 per 100-150 seats, at least one working toilet reachable for every seat by walking within the train. This flixtrain was very far from meeting the former (though it would have if all toilets were operational), and rightly called out for it, but I would definitely like to see similar scrutiny for, for example, above mentioned examples then.

      @TheSpotify95 Рік тому +1

      The train in this video must have had 2 toilets per coach except in the accessible coach, where there was just 1 toilet (the accessible one).
      IMO, 4 out of 5 toilets being faulty is bad, but especially so when the only accessible toilet is also out of service.
      Though at least it's not as bad as EMR Connect in the UK, where a Class 360 has just 1 toilet per 4 car unit (yes it is accessible) and today it was out of order on the train I got, so requiring the toilet would mean getting off your train and taking the next one in 30 minutes time...

    • @sxflyer5410
      @sxflyer5410 2 роки тому +3

      that’s because Flixmobility (which includes Flixbus and Flixtrain) is a German company. They don’t have the swedish expertise. They just saw the opportunity to run their trains in Sweden because of how easy the access for private companies is on the swedish railway network, and just moved some of their German locos and carriages from Germany to Sweden and that’s it…

    actually all these oldie coaches (Amz, Bmz, Bmpz) that show themselves around austrian OBB, Ceske Drahy, Deutsche Bahn or some ex. Yugoslavian operators are extremely comfortable for their ages - (eg. Bmz232 appearing in CD are around 43-44 years old!). Lots of them actually feature AC and proper heating, so, believe me, riding in some extreme winter temperatures does not actually affect yours journey comfort. I rode in one of them a year ago, when the most extreme winter of the decade came to Poland, so the temperatures varied between -15 and -20 degrees, and was extremely disappointed to leave that cozy heat in Katowice :p

    It didn’t click with me until this video that FlixTrain is under the same brand as the buses I’ve used running from New York back to Baltimore and PG County. Buses seem to run fine, though it’s a shame the trains can’t handle the winter well. Perhaps they should try using coaches more native to the region on these runs. Sure it might not be of the same “standard” but they’re more accustomed to climate

    As a swede I think SJ, at present, is having the better product. And the X2s (X2000) has now been refurbished (again) and is now do not look their age (in a good way). And I do not think the £1to £5 difference in price makes up for FlixTrain. Lastly I do not think more operators is good for us, since there is limited capacity for scheduling and this has already made regional schedules less frequent as a consequence (i.e. the commuter train between Stockholm and Gnesta).

    If you plan to take anything into a Polar Region, like a Caravan or Railway Coach, it must be polarised, meaning all windows must be triple glazed, all walls, bulkheads and ceilings, must be multi-layered with correct thickness of insulation. You don't want people and fare paying custommers, arriving dead at their destination, now do you? FlixTrain needs to think again, on this!

    -12 is nothing once when I was in Stockholm it was -28! Stockholm harbour freezes over but they break the ice so the ferries can run . Funnily enough the green of Flix Train looks like the green of Green Cargo which was the freight part of SJ but is run as a separate state corporation now and I don't think SJ do freight now? Looks like it lines up with the very Highlands of Scotland, Kirkwall, Orkney!You might spy some of the very rare but beautiful Nacreous Clouds, aka Polar Stratospheric Clouds, from up there in winter.The second highest cloud type and way above the tropospheric clouds so lit when the Sun is under the horizon.

  • @TheSpotify95
    @TheSpotify95 2 роки тому

    Maybe the reason why the Flix train was only a quarter full was because people who live in that area know that SJ and MTRX are better, so used those trains instead!
    I did notice that some of the windows appeared to be open - and of course, having one toilet out of five is not good, but it's especially a no-no if the toilet that does work isn't the accessible one. Believe it or not there are quite a few people out there who require mobility access, so for them to not be able to use basic facilities on the train is very disappointing.

      In Sweden SJ is synonymous with trains. Open access operators are rarely given a thought. MTRx and Snälltåget have carved out a niche as a high speed alternative, and an option for international night trains respectively. But the demand for low cost low cost services are near nil when MTRx is only marginally more expensive but has superior service in every way

    On the surface this looks like a great train adventure until you come onboard and the train departs the station. From this point on you are at the mercy of this locomotive. With it's art deco hard surface seats. I must say, there is no doubt in my mind that after being seated for 30 minutes, I would have given up on thought of finding a comfortable position to sit in. Also the lack of heat would be an issue but not a game changer. The cold cars would become part of the adventure that you can tell your family about how you froze on a train going over 100 mph. What could be worse? One working toilet, is the answer to that question! That would be a game changer for me. Lucky for you that the other passengers appear to be docile, so one person would not tie up the restroom for very long. Some people are not very adapted to holding it in when they need to go to the lavatory. All told I would make a mental note not to use this carrier anymore, but it was still a very interesting trip with outstanding views. Just don't eat a lot of food prior to boarding. Can you imagine waiting for the toilet and 10 people ahead of you all had bowel movements? You did mention the air ventilation system does not work very well?

    The main reason we had issues with the heat and the toilets last winter was due to all of our coaches undercarriages being smashed up by gravel, so they were replaces by atrociously poor coaches that were driven in from Germany as an emergency measure. We've also had new rules for how to act when the toilets fail, and if we have too few per passenger we will cancel our departures.
    Quite fair review, thank you.

  • @basstrip73

    FlixTrain and other low-cost rail operators are the railway version of low-cost airlines like Ryan Air. Uncomfortable seating, low quality service, terrible customer service and, in FlixTrain's case, a garish neon paint scheme that just screams cheap. IMO these operators are also unnecessary because national rail operators are perfectly capable of providing high-quality service at a variety of price points. Austria's ÖBB is a good example. Franchising out routes and lines serves no practical purpose. It exists only because of ideological reasons (state mandated capitalism).
    At its worst you get FlixTrains-like outfits run on the cheap (or the hodgepodge of operators in the UK that replaced British Rail only to run mediocre services at premium rates). When I am travelling in Europe I will gladly pay a little but more and use full-service train operators that provide a quality service. I realize there are a few exceptions to this rule but generally it holds up and you do get what you pay for.

    • @Finntrans
      @Finntrans 2 роки тому

      Well, look at Finland for example. We only have one operator and that's VR. Though the ride quality and pricing are excellent, the company has been so unwilling to expand its routes and improve services to other places in the country (Rauma, Uusikaupunki etc.). They're doing all they can to stop any kind of competition on the railways to enter, just to protect their monopoly, and this becomes expensive for the taxpayers. And our current government has long been in favour of state monopolies, even though the opposition has been trying to change this. Even my home city region hasn't had any local rail service since 1993 (hopefully restarts in 2024). Finland used to have the majority of its trains as local trains, more express trains, and more diverse routes like you could get more easily by rail from the west coast of Satakunta to the east of Northern Karelia.

    16:27 they don’t work fantastic in Germany either tbh. When I traveled on Flixtrain last time, the train had a delay of over an hour at the first station of the trip, coming out of the depot, and had one carriage less than scheduled. Which was my carriage, so I got a new seat allocated. I had a window seat with extra legroom reserved, but due to this, I now got an aisle seat with normal legroom. The train was insanely packed, people were trying to find their new seats, it was a huge mess.

    16:14 During the blizzard of 1978/79 in Northern Germany, travelling by car was basically impossible. However, the German Railways (DB) was operating with carriages run by Flixtrain now. The temperature had dropped to -20°C and the windchill factor of the moving train had lowered the conditions further. No heating, no sitting as the carriages were crammed full. Standing near the doors and toilet cubicles, we heard the water in the tanks in the roof, frozen and expanding with cracking noises. A woman stared at me and my puzzled look back, triggered a "Doesn't that hurt ?" from her. The condensation from my breath had turned my beard to an icy sculpture.
