That’s too bad. I’ve seen other backyard gardeners covering with shade cloth to prevent early bud break. It’s getting trickier to garden that’s for sure. I have covers for everything of all sorts because it’s getting too hot too soon, too much or not enough rain and I’m concerned about bug pressure this year because winter was too warm. Rain in January in our area is not normal. I don’t know if covering is even possible on that scale, but I think it’s a sign of the future with weather being so challenging.
We have more than 30 acres, so covering the vines overnight to uncover them the next day would be difficult at best. We use frost dragons and high-powered wind turbines, but unfortunately, 26 degrees was just too cold after a few days in the 80s, which really pushed the buds past the point of no return.
