Amidst a dust storm that swept through Mumbai on Monday evening, a towering hoarding in Ghatkopar, touted as one of Asia's largest and recognized by the Limca Book of Records, tragically collapsed. It crashed onto a nearby petrol pump, trapping numerous individuals waiting to refuel. The devastating incident resulted in multiple casualties, with many others hospitalized for treatment. Indrakumar Kevat, among the fortunate survivors, recounts the harrowing experience and his efforts to assist others amidst the chaos. The Maharashtra government has announced financial aid of 5 lakh rupees for the families of the deceased. Shockingly, the massive hoarding, now acknowledged as illegal, went unnoticed by civic agencies. Investigations reveal a case of criminal negligence and culpable homicide, leading to charges against the owner of Ego Media Ad Agency responsible for the hoarding's installation. Bhavesh Bhide, the agency's promoter, has a history of legal issues, including multiple criminal cases listed in his election affidavit. Following the tragic incident, the BMC has initiated the identification and removal of illegal hoardings in Mumbai, with three adjacent hoardings already marked for dismantling. The BMC and Railways collectively oversee over 1200 licensed hoardings in the city, raising concerns about safety and regulatory oversight. This catastrophe adds to a series of instances where civic negligence has resulted in loss of lives in Mumbai, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety measures and stricter enforcement of regulations.
