Exploring My LARGEST Ecosystem │ Large Woodland Terrarium - 1 Month Update!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2021
- In this video we take a look at the Large Woodland Terrarium I built roughly a month ago from uploading this video. The terrarium hosts many plants from a woodland. I introduced isopods and springtails, whilst other species hitchhiked in on the plants and wood.
Inside this bioactive terrarium many species have shown up. Tiny species such as Barklice, Springtails, Globular Springtails, Mites and Fungus Gnats have formed breeding populations. These species are at the very bottom of the food chain and help provide food for larger organisms higher up in the ecosystem.
Larger animals such as Garlic Snails, Worm Slugs and Armadillidium Isopods also call the terrarium home. These species are quite large so don't have to worry as much about predators. Their young and eggs however are much more vulnerable.
Predators such as Springtail Stalker Beetles, Soil Centipedes and Harvestmen have also shown up within the terrarium. I believe the beetles have played a significant role in the reduction of parasitic mites found on the isopods. I also noticed Harvestmen seem to prefer hunting in the plants and wood, whilst the soil centipedes stick to the ground. Springtail Stalker Beetles seem to hunt anywhere, but seem more common in the moss.
What I found surprising is I've yet to see any worms show up within this ecosystem. Despite this soil Centipedes have found their way in. These centipedes hunt earthworms in the wild so have had to adapt to the new conditions inside this terrarium. They can often be seen hunting the surface for mites, springtails and other small invertebrates. The Worm Slugs are also known to live in Earthworm tunnels. Both species may have to adapt to a world without Earthworms... (Unless of course they show up in the next few months... Just because I haven't seen them yet doesn't mean babies aren't hiding out somewhere.)
I'm very pleased with this ecosystem. I hope it'll continue to bring myself and others joy for years to come! :) Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe!

On a scale of 1 -10 what would you rate the Springtails dance moves?

10/10
8/10, needs some more practice
Plants - growing
Snails- snailin
Springtail - vibin
I thought the exact same thing about vibin when I saw the springtail 😂
Haha about the springtail that dance was funnier than I thought🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love that springtails silly little dance.
Same it's funny!
They move like that to create a 3 dimensional space for the sensors on their body to get a good read on the environment.

We were discussing the desire for more Jartopia videos at work only yesterday. We all watch and love your content. Much appreciated. Can't get enough.
Curious what kind of industry you work in where you’re all interested in this pretty niche subject?
That is really neat!
@@roach7616 . Manufacturing. Not really anything to do with it. We just like to share cool videos with each other and try to stay away from the political mess while at work. We have a television in the lunchroom people cast and share cool videos we found on. I started out and supposed to be a CNC programmer and operator but somehow found myself working with manual machines instead. Water jet, lathe, mill, and break press. The switch was unexpected but I'm enjoying the Hands-On approach and appreciate the skills manual machining require.
Cool porpoise
I wish I worked with people who discuss jartopia videos
All of the animals - “fighting for my life”. The one springtail - “lets boogie”
I feel this larger ecosystem actually seems to support life better then the smaller tanks. Its good to know these things are very scalable.
For all animals in captivity having a larger living space is always better. More resources, more escape routes, potentially larger food web etc.
I am no biologist. But nature is amazing at scaling a ecosystem to the size and resources you give it. If either is lacking, it will simply lower biodiversity to compensate. You can literally create an optimal setup for a jar, by throwing dirt into it since nature will always even it out. I highly recommend trying it!
@@minihali Meanwhile software engineer like me struggle to even scale my company’s system by a little lol
u could scale it to an entire planet forreal

This music is so freakin soothing. I wish I could've had something like this in a science class when i was young. So cool
I discovered this channel half a year ago, and since then I've regurarly gone out and created ecospheres from local ponds and rivers with my dad (he studied freshwater biology). It's amazing how much you learn by doing it, even if the ecosphere fails. Please keep producing your great content!
I only discovered this channel a week ago, due to it popping up in my recommended page. Now I am addicted to these videos and I have even created an ecosphere myself :D
let us know how it turns out! I want to try it too!
I just bought a medium-sized jar from Michaels! Couldn’t decide between a really large one or a medium sized one so I settled for the smaller one as my first one. Just gotta choose a local spot to fill it up at tomorrow 🙂
What do you have in it
One month update??
1 month update: obviously some creatures died and all the isopods were driven to extinction due to overpredation so i just added some new isopods. So i guess its doing good after 1 month
The way you treat this information is so respectful and noble that you give new meaning to this entire forgotten world. Thank you for giving us a different perspective of what the human sees and we have forgotten. Great content!
lmao the notification for this video popped up right after I finished watching the first one, call me lucky if you want 😎🤙
That is pog
I got the notification because I'm subbed with notifications on 😉
Have you ever considered a live cam of one of your terrariums?
Only problem I could see is no close ups. I really enjoy the close ups. But I would also LOVE if he could do a live feed. I would tune in quite a bit I think.
Y’all have no lives.
1:24 the spring tail is vibing to some music
this is really healing me. due the high rate of corona virus in my country i can't go out like normal days back then. its really cured me just to see nature from your videos
This guy’s vids are actually addicting, almost like asmr but educational and not super weird (i dont like asmr)
SameSmr! Lol
@@fizgizan lol
@@Philip-sq7un some rudimentary asmr can be satisfying. But most is cringecel af. Definitely any eating, or gum chewing, like I want to chuck my device, and humanity, into a volcano when that presents itself.
@@fizgizan yeah, some history asmr channels are very soothing
I think those weird ASMR videos with the women are focusing on a different form of gratification.I find them creepy af. These videos on the other hand are fascinating and relaxing. One of my favorite channels ever.
I love the background music, film style and natural terrarium builds!
I like the way you just take whatever is in the dirt and go with it. That makes for interesting results...different species from the dirt, from the plants, from the visual enrichment of the tree limbs...You have a wonderful world/worlds in the ecosystems you put together. Thank You!
Think of all the people you miss, how you will never EVER see a single moment of them. They cant smile or breathe or feel happy THEY ARE GONE

These are very enjoyable to watch! Thank you! Can’t wait for an update on the Ocean Ecosystem!
I just want to say keep up the great work, I love these videos so much, they’re just so amazing I can’t even put it into words. I love seeing life develop, grow and change it makes me happy. And the background music is very calming. I wish you the best man, keep it up :D
Yes, that is why I subscribed!
Seems you put it in words.
These video always make me melancholic. These little guys will never figure out they are living for the entertainment of an human adult and his viewers.
Just like we ourselves, will probably never figure out the same thing in our lifetime...
Once, in Italy, there was a leopard. It grew up only knowing the four walls of its cage, but longed for something wild in a way it didn't understand. Then one night, God came to the leopard in a dream. God told the leopard, "I have put you in this place, at this time, so that a certain man will see you. And he will remember you, and he will write you into his book." And the leopard took comfort in this, to know its purpose. Even though it did not truly understand, for how could a beast ever understand the plans of God?
Some years later, the poet Dante lay dying. And God came to him in a dream and said, " I have put you in this place, at this time, so that you would write a certain book. And that book will be remembered for centuries to come." And Dante took comfort in this, to know his purpose. Even though he did not truly understand, for how could a man ever understand the plans of God?
Man, this is so awesome. Just made my first rural pond jar. Hyped for when I get larger jars to make seawater and woodlands, and also update my rural pond one. Can watch em for hours. So soothing.
Your videos are one of the few uploaders I watch full screen. Between the music, the subjects and the amazing camera work... Always look forward to the next update!
I love your videos! Never thought this would be something I would be interested in watching on UA-cam lol... but very fascinating. Can't wait for further updates :D

How does this man have so many insects in his ecosystem? I’ve had my ecosphere for a year now and all I can find is springtails and woodlice :(
I’m envious and in awe

I've got a similar (but less attractive) ecosystem as well. We miss so much by not looking closer at the smaller creatures. They are every bit as interesting and entertaining as larger ones. I love my bugs!
So graceful and…wait….what the…is that a centipede!?!?!
Sweet mother of mercy get the fire!!!!
All in all great terrarium 🙌🏽
Awesome videos!
not sure why I'm watching these but for whatever reason they're incredibly relaxing
Thanks for the nice video. I think it would be beneficial to include a before and after shot at the end for these sequential terrarium updates, so we can see how it's changed and grown since the initial setup.
