question: why is the JCB-378 such a popular horn?

Because it's small, and is cheaper than the Yamaha that it resembles (the YBB-105). It's a manageable-size tuba for beginners. It's not the cheapest 3/4-size tuba, but it is widely available. I think a bigger question would be, why does the 730 exist? It's another small tuba, but not quite as small, yet not full-size. It's a bit of a compromise, but it's kind of pricey for a small tuba.

Having played a few of the older models, it's not a really fat tuba. It's a 4/4-size, so it just plays bigger than a 3/4-size, not huge, like a 6/4-size monster. It's a manageable sound, and gives good punch. I just hope this redesign (now that the model has been out for 4 years) fixes a few flexibility issues that the 582 before it had.
