- Living St. Louis Producer Anne-Marie Berger looks back at a time when St. Louis was known as the "Brick City." Recently, the Saint Louis University Museum of Art hosted the exhibit, "Brick by Brick: Building St. Louis and the Nation," which chronicles the brickmaking history in St. Louis.

Mispronounced Soulard. And aside from abundant clay, a major reason STL is a brick city is the Great Fire of 1849. It destroyed the riverfront, warehouse district and several blocks inland before a firebreak burned it out. Consequently wooden construction was forbidden and brick specified in building codes for all subsequent construction in the City of STL. GREATprogram.

The church where me and my siblings were baptised is now closed for good unfortunately but was built in red brick made here in St Louis, gorgeous church. I truly miss attending there the church is over 100 years old.
Great video! That said, thanks to Bricklayer's Union greed most people can't afford to build new homes with brick. Sure, there might be a bit on the front of houses, but the rest of the them are usually vinyl siding. My friend built a brand new home in Louisville, KY and it's all brick and was still very affordable. Actually, his neighborhood is very similar to mine in west St. Louis county, but it was still cheaper than what I paid. Yeah, location, location, location counts, but from my eyes, it was a fair comparison. This is just another example where a union who has bargained themselves out of a job.
