@rocky0726 “is ideal” is correct, because style (singular) is the subject here and not videos. It can be shortened to say “Your style is ideal”, but if the subject of the sentence was videos, as in “Your videos are ideal”, then “are” would be correct. I hope this helps.

As a mathematician myself I would be very interested in videos on the philosophy of math. For quite some time I have had this thought, that the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms encapsulate a sort of phenomenology of how we perceive the objective world (with possible connections to machine learning), but I know way too little about phenomenology to pursue this further.

I think math is actually a great way to philosophize, not just the axiom of choice (even sounds philosophical) but Goedel's incompleteness theorem seems to indicate a self-referential nature, rather than strict materials - indicating to me, that there is likely substance to the idea of metaphysical idealism, that consciousness might be a fundamental particle/substance/force in the universe... Plus Continuity and number theory that brought about the different infinities get really trippy and philosophical too. I'm not either mathematician or philosopher, but a scientist, and I think the universe is filled with philosophical, poetic, even spiritual patterns and emergences both discovered and unexplored 🌄❤️‍🔥

A horse walks into a bar and says to the bartender “Hey bartender, I’ll have a double whiskey hold the ice”.
The bartender says “Hey horse, you’ve been in here everyday this week….I think you’re an alcoholic”!
The horse says “I don’t think, I am”! And poof…disappeared.
Obviously this is a joke about Descartes saying ‘I think there for I am’. But if I said this part first I would have put Descartes before the horse. 😊

Another unmentioned problem with the extreme caricature of the stoic idea that you can alleviate all harm by changing your relationship to it is that it justifies victim blaming. “If the person I severely harmed can simply alleviate the harm I caused them and I enjoyed committing harm upon them, then why should I be blamed? It’s their fault for not changing their relationship to the harm.”

Mathematical logic is why math students will sometimes be encouraged to become lawyers.
It's also the tool that allows us to express what is as of yet mostly agreed upon to be the largest number imagineable, Rayo's Number, which is less a number and more a simplification of the logical description of the largest number describable with a given number of available characters, though Rayo himself defined it by saying the largest number describable with one googol available characters.
I believe the formal way to write it is something like, "The smallest number which is still greater than the largest number that can be described within one googol's worth of characters of logical description."

I'd love to see a video exploring the last idea of "God is Good" from a linguistic perspective!! I'm always inclined to critique the equivalence implied in statements like “God is Good” or “God is Love.” Not to be Saussurean, but I believe signs derive meaning through difference, not identity. Hence, synonyms do not exist- when we say something like "God is Good" we are actually saying God ISNT Good. If they were the same thing, there would be no need to equate the two.

About the podcast idea of arguing for the other side:
It can do a lot more than you might think! In an English course in college we were assigned a reading and to do an argumentative essay on it. The professor told us we’d be arguing against the reading, and everyone just seemed ok with that, so I approached her after class and told her I did not agree with the reading and asked if I could write my essay arguing for the reading (it was an article on the “Tiger Mom” and I was the only student with kids so I thought I knew better of course). She said no, and not only did I become a much better reader and writer, but I learned a few things about parenting too.

In math-land what really gets me is that Axiom of Choice seems to be "accepted", but when you dig into many of "limits of logic" "incompleteness" etc., you find that AC is often involved somehow. Which in turn makes me always very suspect of it - and I guess there's a reason why you do note whether given proof is based on the axiom of choice.

We need more rfc2119 in philosophy.
It's one of my favorites to use, it's basically defining may, should, must, should not and must not.
Basically a "look it up if you want the exact definition" it's used is probably the majority of rfc nowadays with something like "may, should, should not, must and must not are used as defined in rfc 2119" basically turns 1 page into one line. And if you're familiar with it you don't have to look it up.

I really enjoy as a concept when host of something asks a guest to strongarm an opposite position, so if that could be a whole show I would love it

I'm technically a computer scientist, although I'm much more into the mathematical side of it. There's a good chance that you covering mathematical logic would just be stuff I already know, but it is one of my favourite branches of maths, so I wouldn't mind.

Please do the stuff on maths phil I think it'd be great. Idk how the algorithm would like it but I definitely would and hopefully I'm not alone on that. Love your channel and it's gotten me into so much literature and phil - you're the reason Dostoevsky was on my xmas list. Have a great day :)

I also will recommend the book "An Introduction to Formal Philosophy" if you wanted to learn symbolic logic with applications to all varieties of topics such as economics, physics, sociology and computer science under the heading of philosophy of science. Also "Accessing Kant: A Relaxed Introduction to the Critique of Pure Reason" this book from Oxford is quite peculiar since it is very analytic and even scientific in making Critique of Pure Reason more easy to digest and visualize.

The “push someone off a bridge to stop a speeding trolley” variation never made sense to me. When pulling a lever, there is some certainty about what will happen. If I pull the lever, the trolley will move to the other track. But it is completely unintuitive that pushing a guy in front of a runaway trolley will *stop* the trolley. If I were in the pushing situation, I would never even consider that as an option. I would just watch in horror alongside the nice big man next to me. If you came up to me afterwards and said “ah I see you are a deontologist for sparing the man’s life” I’d be like WTF

Hey Joseph! I am becoming more interested in learning mathematical logic for improving my reasoning and argumentative abilities. With you being so experienced in this particular topic, could you recommend some resources, ranging from beginner (me) to more advanced?
Keep up the great work, I really appreciate the way you explain complex ideias in such a clear manner.

I'm working towards a masters in Physics at the moment, I would enjoy very much some more content on the philosophy of science (and physics more specifically) to gain a better grasp on the less talked-about roots of Physics, from the point of a Physicist, that is! Thank you!
