😂😂😂😂😂😂 It gets me every time!!! Pretty music, pretty mucic, pretty mus... scratch record and a sheep just looking straight at you. Silence. I roar with laughter EVERY TIME! 🤣🤣😂🤣😂😂 and huge thank you for showing us grumpy Henry. It makes me feel SO much better when I think back to an astro photo I was able to take last year. I'd spent the night f*ing and blinding at both the camera AND my abilities until the point my awesome photo was in the camera. Then I was Henry on coffee.... 🤣😂🤣😂 Not childish - human nature to be disappointed and frustrated with ourselves because we know what we want, and mess up or dont trust ourselves. Grumpy Henry has a place in our lives too, so dont be so hard on yourself!

I have the Z7 but decided to go for the much cheaper F-mount 100-400 from Tamron that I use with adapter. Works really well! Good autofocus, image stabilisation and sharpness for just 550 pounds on black friday discount. A highly recommended alternative to the expensive Nikon Z 100-400.

Watching you is always entertaining and informative! Keep up the great work.
I have the Nikon Z 100-400mm and I love it, both for wildlife and landscape, but it is expensive compared with third party F-mount (+ FTZ adapter) options. Some things to consider:
    1) The Sigma and Tamron 100-400 lenses have 67mm filter threads--the same as your 24-200mm lens has--and they weigh about half a pound less than the Nikon Z 100-400, even with the FTZ adapter. The Z 100-400 has a 77mm filter thread.
    2) The Z 100-400 has a 0.38x magnification ratio compared with 0.26x and 0.28x for the Sigma and Tamron lenses, making the Z 100-400 a better close-up lens. Minimum focus distance is 2.5 ft (so a little under 2 ft from the end of the lens).
Maybe you can convince a camera store or rental company (like KEH) to loan you the lenses to try out in exchange for acknowledgement as you try them out during your videos. Also, you might be able to get a loan of the Z 100-400 through NPS (Nikon Professional Services) if you're a member.

Try shooting the 24-200 in DX mode to get a feel for what a 350mm might look like. Then decide if the 100-400 Z mount is worth it for you. I got a Z mount 100-400 last Summer and it is not cheap but then why would you want cheap? When I had my D 7200 I borrowed a Tamron 100-400 and a 150-600 at an air show. I was disappointed because they were not sharp wide open or even at F8. You had to be at F 11 to get then decently sharp. The problems were worse at both the first 50 or so mm and the last 50 or so mm. Stopped down they were useful from 150-350 and 200 to 550mm. I felt I could not handle that frustration.

One thing to consider is the price of the FTZ Converter… they are around $250 (dollars). The Sigma 100-400mm F mount is around 750$ (new). The Nikon 100-400 is around $2500-@2700.
So is a $1000 difference, even with the adapter. In my opinion that’s the way to go!!!

Hey Henry, I disagree with your comment saying the tree photo didn't turn out well. When you zoomed in at 6:30ish in the video. That tree came into it's own. Every photo is subjective. Some people will love it and some won't. So let me tell you mate, i loved it.. Some of the photos i take, i think "ermm yeah it's ok" but then someone else loves them and tells me that is really good. This keeps me taking photos. I have learn't a lot from you over the last few years, so keep up the great work.

Hi Henry, hope your day turned out well!
With my Z7 setup I use the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm (F-lens, FX-version) with the FTZ2 adapter. It's very reasonable in weight and size, and has a very good optical quality. I bought the lens and adapter for about 650 euro. It's easy to do handheld shots with it (onboard VR) or tripod-shots without some special collar mount. And at 70mm you'll keep it longer on the camera with for instance woodland-compositions than when it would start at 100mm. Most of my images made with it are between 135mm-250mm, but no doubt in that last location in your video I also would like to have more reach towards 400mm.

I have a Z100-400. It is wonderful...and heavy. It is a great lens and you will love it for isolating "the shot within the shot." I find that I tend to carry two lenses - either the 14-24 2.8S and the 24-120 f4S. or the 24-120 and the 100-400. This may be because I am old and fat, but carrying all three lenses is a bit f a burden. Just want to say that you are inspiring - I love your videos.

Has to be the z100-400. Either be patient save up & get it or just get it. It is a cracking lens. And instead of having to buy a FTZ adapter for another lens get a x2 teleconverter

Henry, that back-lit image of the frost-covered trees was remarkable! I think you'll find that if you invest in the 100-400, more opportunities like that will come your way. No experience with third-party lenses, but the only lenses I carry for my z7II are the 24-120S and the 100-400S. The 100-400 is my most-used lens. Plus, the Nikon 100-400 (and the 24-120) focus so much closer than such zooms used to. So not only is the focal range incredibly useful, but the range from intimate landscapes/macro to distant horizon shots is something special.

Oi! Stop ya blinkin mithering ya grumpy young man! 😁 Try drinking more coffee before you set out, that might help. Absolutely love the backlit tree. I’ve invested in a 100-400mm for my R6, somewhat based around your enthusiasm for longer focal length shots - I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. For what it’s worth, I think the native lens would be the better choice, as it’s properly matched to the camera - one less bit for something to go wrong.

On my last outing, I was going to a lake and just as I arrived, it started snowing. This was not in the forecast. I decided I'd get some shots of the lake in the snow and continue with my plan to hike to the nearby woods. About a 100 feet from my car, it suddenly turned into a blizzard. Since I didn't want my car to get stuck out there, I only took a few pictures of the lake in the blizzard then left. The picture turned out pretty cool so it wasn't a total waste, but I still would have rather had my morning of hiking in the area and looking for compositions.

Hello Henry, I agree with you regarding the tree shots. if I'm honest I don't think the first shot worked (sorry!!), but the second just sang to me, I loved it, it's definitely a keeper!!
I used to have a Sigma 150-500 which I bought for my Nikon D750, and I kept it for my Z7ii which I used via the v1 adapter. It was ok, and I do love sigma lenses, but I hankered after a Z series long lens. So I foolishly sold the Sigma, not realising that I would have such a long wait for a Z series compatible long zoom. I now have the Z 100-400mm which I use with the 1.4 teleconverter. It is a superb lens, and I think that it was worth the investment. I think some other manufacturers are not far off producing a long zoom for the Z series, so there might be some competition soon If you go for a F mount via the adapter, then I would recommend the V2 as it looks to be smaller, less intrusive, and I think will work better on a tripod as well. Don't write off the Z 100-400mm though, or the soon to be announced 200-600mm, as a pro, I think you will find it worth the investment. Good luck!!

My experience is the FTZ adapter works fine for landscape work, not so good for action shots as the focus takes just a tiny bit longer, enough to miss some action shots. But Landscape is not so critical with quick focus times, so even using used/refurbished F-Mount glass is great on the Z cameras.

That tree-picture at 11:35 looks so mysterious! Beautiful! And I love the drone image! I had the Tamron 100-400 on my D7100 and it was a great lens. Very sharp and the VC did a gread job too. But I sold it last year because 100 was too far for me for the short end. My other lens is a 17-55, so there was quite a lot missing in between. And I didn't use it on 400 all that often, so I made the choice to sell it. I don't regret selling it, but if I ever wanted a 100-400 again, I wouldn't hesitate getting one of those. Of course I have no experience in using it on a Z7, but mine was compatible with full frame cameras as well. I don't think you'd be disappointed, if you can live with F6.3 being the fastest aperture. I have to say, the VC makes up for the aperture and you can use a very slow shutter speed handheld with it, even on the longer focal lengths.

It's definitely the most stressful (and weirdly enjoyable) aspect to landscape photography. Researching and planning. Plan A, Plan B, Plan C. And things rarely go to plan. Sometimes I find it's best to only form Plan A and stick to it to avoid the hesitation in the field. We can't be everywhere at once, and we can only work off forecasts and our pre-visualisations. I do a lot of nightscapes and find the planning really enjoyable, but only less stressful if I don't have too many competing ideas lined up for the night. Sure, clouds get in the way, the wind gets up, but we jusy have to shrug our shoulders and not get down. You got some great videography there with the drone!

Henry, Henry Henry! Bless ya! To say that I can sympathise is well and truly an understatement! The number of times I've done exactly the same thing! These days though, I've gone too far the other way, and I tend to go out without a plan at all, which at times can be even worse. Then you end up thinking "Now what do I do?" Sometimes you just have to think to yourself "Well, at least I'm out! I'm out and about, so I'm in with a shout!" 😁😁All the best mate. By the way, please make sure that caffeine is the ONLY drug you take first thing in the morning! 🤪😆

I currently have a Sigma 10-20mm f mount that I use with my Z5 and the FTZ11 adapter. Other than needing to do the firmware update, I've had no issues using my Sigma lens.

I've just invested in a 100-400 canon L series lens from MPB. I went for the mk I as it was cheaper but no discernable difference to the mkii. I don't know Nikon lenses, but perhaps something along those lines would save a bit of the hard earned!

If you have the money, go for the Z-lenses.. I have a z7ii, and use Sigma and Tamron lenses with the adapter, and they work fine, but lack in sharpness compared to the Z-lenses..

Hi Henry the Tamron 100-400mm is fantastic on my D850 sharp and reasonably light to carry about. Not sure how it works with the FTZ maybe do a search on flickr for that setup and have a look at some images. 100-400 is a great focal range to have up your sleeve.

I've got the Tamron 100-400mm with an FTZ II. Nice piece of glass. Only issue is that I have to enter the lens manufacturer into Lr and ACR for lens correction. Hoping that will be corrected with a Z5 or Adobe update.

Nikon 100-400 is a superb lens, I us it mainly for wildlife/ action, family pictures a bit of landscape realy sharp and colour rendering, not had good look with other lenses that worked on nikon Dslrs, but don't work on Z6ii 24-200 is my go
    to lens for walking about.

Hi Henry, not too shabby for a day that went wrong ;-) Thanks for another grand day out. More super images .. I can see a couple of calendar candidates there. I can see why you'd like the 100-400, but likely 2nd hand they're are rare as hen's teeth, so it does make some sense to consider other vendors. Just be careful with alternative vendors how you might upgrade their firmware later / does it potentially compromise the weather sealing, so good luck with the search for a lens. btw. please don't put your coffee on your Z7, I'm really not so sure it would appreciate an arabica bath. Having had a thought, if you want longer reach without selling a kidney, then maybe one "curved ball" suggestion might be a 2nd hand F Mount Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR. Say it's about £800 plus an FTZ2 ( maybe another £200) from those nice MPB people ( Other sellers are available ). Sure its not the latest and greatest technology but it would be native Nikon and relatively affordable.

Don’t bother with the ftz adapter and other lenses, it’s a waste of money that could have gone towards the z native 100-400. My experience of the ftz using Nikon f mount lenses is weird things can happen in certain lighting conditions, I have had weird ghosting and artefacts reflected in the image. I think it’s because the older lenses don’t have the same coatings as modern lenses. Some lenses are ok some are not, but you won’t know until you have spent the money and found out the hard way. The z lenses are far superior in every way. I cheaped out and use the ftz adapter with an older f mount 20mm f1.8g because it worked out about £250 cheaper than the z 20mm. It’s ok but I do kick myself every-time I use that lens because I know it isn’t as good as the z option.
