This week we are visiting a meerkat haven situated in the Kalahari Desert. Kalahari Trails Meerkat Sanctuary which was started in the year 2000 by Professor Anne Rasa. The meerkats here roam freely around the lodge grounds, breeding and living a natural life. They are friendly and adorable furry friends with unique personalities that will often approach you for love and affection. The sanctuary also offers guided walks, game drives, and tours to learn more about the magnificent Kalahari and all the animals that live here. The meerkats that live here are all in the process of being rehabilitated and once they are ready to leave, they will go out into the surrounding desert wilderness and never look back. The work they are doing at the Kalahari Trails Meerkat Sanctuary is amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there getting to know some adorable meerkats!
A lot of people are unaware that it is illegal to own meerkats as pets. These are wild animals that are not meant to be pets. Meerkats are brought to the sanctuary in the hopes of rehabilitating them. They have been successfully rehabilitating meerkats since the year 2000 and still going strong today.
It was a once in a lifetime experience to interact with these amazing creatures and get to know a number of them personally.
Richard Rasa recently took over the running of the sanctuary and has been making great progress in upgrading since he started. He has a great vision for the future of the sanctuary and we are excited to see where it goes. Keep up the great work Rich! Richard started out working in the Corps of Royal Engineers for the British Army. Through a series of misadventures he found himself working as security in the film industry. After spending time working night shifts, he was invited to start working on set as part of the film and stunt crew. His life took another major turn as He went from working on the sets of major film productions such Jurassic Park, Fast and Furious 6, Sherlock Holmes, even appearing as a death eater in Harry Potter to living among meerkats in the Kalahari Desert. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Rich and find him to be one of the most humble and down to earth guys that we have had the pleasure of meeting.
Our tips for visiting this region:
◾Stock up before arrival as the nearest town is about 76 km away from the sanctuary.
◾ Always respect the wildlife, we are in their home after all.
◾Check out some of the amazing activities to do nearby such as sandboarding on the dunes as well as the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

They are small 😄 we were also surprised. They stand quite tall though. Interesting fact: their size and coloring also depends on which part of the county they come from.

We really did! We were so sad to leave and we just want to go back! 😍 They didn't. Because of the babies, they all stayed quite close to the burrows. Do you think you guys will visit again sometime? 😄

Hey Ira 😄 thank you so much! We camped at the sanctuary for just short of a week so we were able to interact with the Meerkats every day 😃 it definitely is possible to take a day trip there and spend some time with them. They all run wild so no tour is needed, you simply rock up, sit down and let the Meerkats come to you 🥳 they are very social animals so they will be very interested in some one new 😁 just phone ahead of time and ask about the opening times and prices as it was a long time ago so we unfortunately cannot give you up-to-date information 😊 but otherwise we hope that you enjoy your time with them if you manage to get there, we absolutely loved it!! 😁
