One of my favorite Alex solo's.
Especially live
From an Analog Kid to a Digital Man.
You finally end up as a New World Man.
These guys had life covered.
R.I.P. Neil.
You are so missed, and I never even met you.
Rush wrote what they wanted to and didn't care about what was popular or commercial and so were marginalized their entire career by the music establishment and media, unlike more well known lesser bands that knuckled under and only produced radio friendly songs. Rush never won a Grammy or had a number one single but the volume and quality of their music makes them one of, if not the, greatest bands ever.
The perfect song. It's about youth, longing for the big world, but be careful what you wish for, sometimes right where you are is fantastic, everything has a cost. Definitely one of my favs, if not #1.
This is an iconic moment in a persons life. It’s a young boy on the cusp of everything. The music reflects the frenetic pace of life that’s about to hit him and he finds a quiet moment to reflect about where he is is and where his life is going… the big city, adventures..his future. The anxiety and excitement about what is about to follow…it’s beautifully reflected both in the lyrics and in the music. Top 10 rush tune for sure this song meant a lot to me when signals came out and still does.
Neil's lyrics are what put Rush above every other band to me. So many more songs that are deeply meaningful left fo you to listen to. 😁
I was fortunate enough to take a fawn-eyed girl with sun brown legs to see this show in Hampton, Va. in ‘82❤❤
Now that you mention it, I did the same thing three years later in Toronto, during the Power Windows tour. She reminded me of that fact when we saw Bryan Adams together a couple of weeks ago.
They all kick some gluteus maximus, but Alex absolutely shreds!
Analog kid, Digital Man, and losing it are definitely my three favorite songs from signals. Signals was actually the first concert I ever saw. 1982, I was 15 years old.
Everybody wish Geddy a Happy Birthday,he is 71 today!
Happy Birthday Geddy🎉🎉🎉
This band isn't talked about because they are not easy for many people to listen to, you have to have an open mature mind to get them.
Yep, that’s Rush. Come for the amazing tunes and stay for the lyrics.
Transition kings!
Good music will hit you in the feels. I don’t know how often I’ve teared up at the perfect combination of lyrics and instruments done by Rush
Dame, I think the average HARD ROCK fan doesn't care THAT MUCH about the CONTENT of the LYRICS, they care more about how the PHRASING FLOWS. One of the main things that got me into Rush was their utter UNIQUENESS in Rock Music... Think about it Dame... MOST Rock Songs (at least in the past) were about Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I ENJOY the more SERIOUS THEMES and OFF TIME SIGNATURES found in Rush's music. I think it also has to do with how SERIOUS you are about being a MUSICIAN. Again PARTY ROCK is fine, but sometimes we want more! The average listener just wants to ROCK OUT!! I didn't mean to write A BOOK!
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. My favorite parts are the synth breaks and Geddy's vocal, as well as Alex's guitar solo. The lyrics, to me, represent a boy growing up, coming of age. There is an awesome live version of this from the Clockwork Angels tour, if you ever want to watch a live performance.
Rush was always slept on because back in the day. It was considered “nerd“ music. The music and the lyrics were often too complex for teenagers to get it.
Not for us ‘nerds’ 😏
Amazing song! It hits me everytime I listen to it!
Definitely in my top ten Rush songs. The quick tempo moderated by an expansive-feeling, synth rooted chorus really grab me, not to mention the deliciously furious Lifeson solo. I’d go so far as to say that Analog Kid could be seen as an excellent reflection of the era (when I was a teen).
Pretty amazing when you think about how many people back in the day wrote Neil’s lyrics off as “cheesy.” Another great reaction. We can almost see your mind expanding… it’s a thing with these guys. 😂
Someone suggested the song Losing It off this same album… you should consider taking that one for a spin. Great, great song with very thought provoking lyrics.
Happy Birthday Geddy
This song takes you to church! Alex's solo is off the charts and one of my faves!
Neil dreaming of heading off to the city with big dreams then having those dreams fulfilled and missing the peaceful solitude of the family farm. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant song!
Rush always went against the grain and did their own thing.
Conseqently the music industry didn't likecor promote them.
Figured you might like that one. One of my favorite solos by Alex.
Nostalgic, but yet driving and motivating. ❤🎉
BRAVO!!! This is such a great track, amazing bass lines and monster guitar work. Oh, and Geddy sounds amazing as well! Up next, "New World Man". ☮
Yes, adventure and exploring from the perspective of a kid. The world is analog and possibilities are endless.
Next step is going through Chemistry, the following song on the album. This changes the kid in many ways and he becomes the Digital Man living in a technological world.
Happy 71st Bday Geddy!🍻🤘
One of my favorites 😁
Chemistry and The Wepon from the same album are also great songs👍
one of a kind,,,,🤘🤘🤘
Rushaholic since 75` RushON! ;)
Rush has been my secret favorite band since I was 14 years old. Secret because it seems they are either deeply loved, or strongly hated. They are incredibly layered and complex . Too advanced for me at a young age...they seemed like strange rock wizards. Their songs are so evocative....I have both wept and rejoiced listening! And that's exactly what brilliant music is supposed to do 🧡🎶
hes in dream imagination world the synth expressing, "lighting the way" great reaction
Hey Bud, new subscriber here. Love the Rush reactions! This one is my favorite Rush song. If you want to see some serious musicianship, check out the live version of the Analog Kid from the Clockwork Angels tour! Incidentally, I was at this show in 2012 in Dallas Texas 6th row center! That is the one they used for filming. Two things you'll notice, we gave Alex a huge standing ovation after his solo. Also check out Geddy playing bass and the synth with his feet! Talk about talented. Anyway, love following your Rush journey with you! Great, smart and thoughtful reactions!
Bro.. you rock 😎. Neil wrote this about youthful innocence and a girl he met in 1967. These dudes are my hero’s
Neil loved nature. Loved to be in it. Loved to be challenged by it. He wrote about it here. This was also about trying to find something that you can't find at home, such as what Neil did when he left Canada for the UK for 18 months in the early '70s to seek gainful employment in his field of expertise. "The fawn-eyed girl with sun-browned legs" was making reference to a girl Neil met at a public municipal swimming pool when his family were vacationing in Ohio when he was a kid. So a lot of this song was autobiographical.
Analog Kid grows up to be a Digital Man. 🤯 That's what makes him a 'New World Man' 😉🥰🐰
Re: hard-headed, the expression is generally used to describe someone who is practical and realistic, as opposed to being idealistic or a dreamer. You arguably need some of both to be a successful risk taker.
New World Man is awesome
Very Simple. Rolling Stone black balled them early on.
They don`t call him the professor for nuthin.
Why aren’t they popular? I would say as with all progressive music it’s just too much chaos for most people. I freaking love it especially with Rush because they always put the music first. Is it musical or not? But seriously three people playing full out is a lot to process for people that want “A Strong and Simple Beat, That they can Dance to”.
Oh, I see what you did there Mr.. Superconductor. 😄
It's about southern Ontario and Toronto. Also leaving to go out on tour.
They were treated unfairly by the people who controlled the airways and quite simply did not get exposed to the general radio listening masses, but the bands you mentioned among a lot of others who were less talented were exposed by radio constantly. I truly believe if Rush had gotten the same airplay as these bands, they would have been considered by most, the G.O.A.T! But seeing they didn't and still made it just by word of mouth by those lucky enough to had heard them speaks volumes.
This band was always maligned by the “popular media” because they basically said F’U’ an we’re gonna make the music we wanted to make.
An I think because of that you either “got them” or you didn’t…
They are a thinking man’s band, and when they get inside your head, every lyric becomes relatable.
Their so fuckin good at what they do, one day they will have to be explained, their just that good 🤘🔥🤘
A lot of people didn't get Rush, outside of their hugely devoted fan base, the "cult fans" lol. First, you had Geddy with his high banshee type voice in the early days and after the first couple albums strayed from the mainstream with the largely progressive, LONG concept type stuff. Tough for people that just liked 4 chord rock (AC/DC) to get into. Add in the intelligent lyric writing that pretty much had nothing to do with typical boy and girl love relationships and people couldn't or wouldn't take the time to get into it, even in later more radio friendly stuff. They had already made up their minds in 1975, 76 etc. This included the critics as well. So no Rolling Stone cover etc til the end of their career. The true Rush fans got it, and got it all. The intelligent lyrics, the unbelievable musicianship, the friendship the 3 guys had/have. If you talk to the younger Generation today, they most likely will have heard of Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones etc. But most kids today will not know Rush. Sad. But that kinda explains why they were never a household name......unless one of us Rush fanatics lived in that particular household lol
With all that's going on right now politically, you've got to listen to "beneath, between, behind". It was Neil's first song he wrote.
Think of the analog kid growing up in the rural mountainside with the view of the city. He knows there's more out there but it's off in the distance.
The song that got me into Rush! Yes, I’m old as dirt
@@timshelton8535 you're not the only one kid.
The talking heads of music hates Rush and any music thats not about relationships or love between people good or bad. They can't comprehend anything but 4 .4 beat . If they can't tap their foot 1234 they don't get it. Stupid is stupid does. How do they keep their job at the magazines they work for. And they shove their faves on us. Rush is best fuck the rest.😊😊😊. Rush army knows this. Try test for echo live 1997 or show don't tell live or nobody's hero live 97or marathon live 1989 . The list goes on an on. Try 2112live 1997 . keep on Rushin😅😅😅
Small town kid drawn to the big city. Don't know what is in the city and is the things he likes in the small town be lost to him.???
Why don't you hear Rush talked about more among legendary rock bands?
In the early years Rush had a hard time getting a break in publicity due to a few individuals in the press, and those in press management. Back in the day, before the internet, magazines and radio (later MTV for the first decade when they actually played music videos) were the only way to spread the word about great bands, aside from fan word-of-mouth. The biggest in the Rock industry, Rolling Stone magazine, for whatever reason not only did not cover this legendary band, but the berated and hated them. Rush had to be come famous the hardest way of all, non-stop touring with bigger and bigger venues with each album, eventually selling out not only arenas, but stadiums for concerts.
It also has to do with the people one surrounds themselves with. Rush fan requirement is a higher-than-average IQ, for the less fortunate minds, the lyrics are above their heads and the music too technical for their minds to properly assimilate. If you are the only one among your music loving friends who is in to Rush or wants to hold conversations about them, the you are too intelligent for your crowd and you need to get out in the world and find friends on the same mental level as you.
Even today, having been indicted into the Rock & Roll hall of fame in 2013, with a career surpassing 4 decades, behind only the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in having the most consecutive Gold or platinum albums with sales in the tens of millions of albums, they are still the worst kept Rock god trio secret, with millions of die-hard fans, yet, billions still don't know they even exist. And in all that time the most well known artists aren't necessarily the best, it's what the record companies push on the radio stations and today streaming music enclaves, still all about palms getting greased with green instead of artistic integrity and true talent. That's why modern music sucks and blows at the same time!
For me personally, and millions of fans of Rush, if the greats of the Rock world like Led Zeppelin are pictured standing on the clouds, looking down at all the rest below them on earth, Rush would be standing on the moon looking down on the earthly clouds. Rush will be the classical music of the generations 200+ years from now like the classical composers of 200 years ago when 99% of other rock bands, if recordings still exist, will be collecting metaphorical dust in whatever digital archive, or real dust in physical archives. Rush will be taught in music theory of the great music schools of the world, if they aren't already, while most rock bands would be too crass and primitive to be elevated to lecture halls of the finest music schools.
I have listened to Rush since the early 80s and while in school it was considered "nerd music". I accepted it and wore it like a badge of honor, but in reality Rush is a thinking persons band. Not just a bunch of fluff.
Please Dame "MIDDLETOWN DREAMS" heart felt lyrics and very emotional song , Alex is Also Amazing.
You might even shed a tear to this one.
It's one of my favourites.
Take Care.
❤
It's about youth. He grows up to be the digital man and then becomes the New World Man. So you have to do New World Man now.
Apparently, it is a song about a summer love that Neil wanted!
Rush were marginalized by the mainstream because their songs were what they wanted to write & play, and weren't really radio friendly. Rolling Stone in particular had it out for them, as evidenced by how long it took for them to make the RRHOF. Rush built their following on word of mouth & were successful enough after a point (the 2112 album) that their label stopped trying to force their vision on the band & just let them do what they do. Those early critics have long since eaten their words. Rush's influence on other musicians and their 40+ year career and the devotion of their fanbase is nearly unmatched.
Listen to Subdivisions!
The exact question you asked is kinda answered by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins in the “Beyond the Lighted Stage” documentary on Rush. All those other bands you named have been over explained, over hyped and eventually the people will ask why was this band marginalized, or why were they sidelined and someone is going to have to explain that. The REAL reason I believe that Rush wasn’t accepted with open arms not just by the media but some of their peers is because they were on their own path trying to be the best they could be and obviously and significantly blowing away all the competition doing their own thing while others were selling out and NOT succeeding as well as them.🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎤🎹
Why isn't Rush more popular? I have two thoughts on the matter. First is to get the marketing/exposure, you have to make it in the US or the UK and the US and UK tend to promote their own. Second reason is early Rush songs weren't radio friendly due to song length. Prior to Permanent Waves, Rush may have had like two to three radio friendly songs. Based on the bands style (prog rock) and reputation, not many radio stations played theirs songs. In comparison bands like Led Zeppelin and ACDC were more mainstream bands that suited radio. When the 80's rolled around, Rush's direction changed to shorter songs, while still maintaining the elements of prog. I can think of many of Rush's 80's catalog that should have been radio hits but just weren't played on the radio. I feel their 70's reputation as a prog heavy band followed them into the 80's and radio stations didn't play their music. Donna Halper the women credited with discovering Rush in the US stated, mainly the bigger cities in the US played Rush songs but for the most part, the majority of the radio stations in the US didn't.
But that guitar solo!
For me Rush, Led Zepp, and Alison Krauss and the Union Station are the top musicians on my list followed closely by many others. I listen to and appreciate all kinds of genres. I own more than a solid week of music if you listen for 24/7. So many great songs, I had the luxury of listening in the decade of the 70’s, best ever.
