K Koke explains that even though he might've wanted to move away, he was unable to: "I'd rather be around the s**t I know than the s**t I don't know," he says. When I grew up in that area, most people were hard working... A lot of the guys I grew up with like this guy decided that it was easier to sell drugs and be a criminal than work... no money in a 9-5 compared to slinging.. What is sad is that when I go back, those same guys who made all that money and lived that life are all sad old men who spend their days reflecting on the good ole days.. The ones who worked have prospered and are living well.... It's a pity that these young men can't see that.....

My mother worked when I was a kid, so I when I finished school I had to go to a child minder in Harlesden. Her ex-husband lived in Stonebridge and we would all go hangout there sometimes. I never felt it was that different from any other of the large estates in London, but it’s reputation was always bad. I think it was always worse if you were a known criminal. As a regular person I was never bothered by anyone, or felt it was dangerous, but London is funny like that because under the surface there are are psychos looking for targets.
Places where one person gets no attention are also the same places others get shot at. I distinctly remember how shops, restaurants and nightclubs would suddenly sprout bullet holes and police tape around North West London and you’d think, “Who the fuck must have run into each other.” Seemingly normal area would become crime scenes.
I made a distinct effort to get the fuck out, not that I didn’t love growing up there, I just realized it’s a fucking dead end. What people say about there being the same problems and risks everywhere isn’t really true. If your reputation and your associates are bringing you agro then leaving eliminates that.
