- When leaving for Tabuk, the Prophet (s) appointed Imam Ali (as) as his deputy in Madinah to protect against any uprising led by the Munafiqeen. That day he said to Imam Ali "You are to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me."
There were at least 6 other occasions that Prophet Muhammad made such a statement about Imam Ali.
One such occasion was narrated by Umar ibn Al-Khattab, when he emphasized how precious such a statement was by saying "If I had [a quality like that mentioned about me or my family], it would be dearer to me than anything."
What ranks did Prophet Harun have compared to Prophet Musa?
- Minister
- Helper
- Brother
- Backer/Strengthener
- Partner
The lecture includes objections Sunni scholars have raised to believing that this status continued after the Prophet's death, and Shia rebuttals to those objections.

Great video!!!
Salaam, I find hadith al Manzila so intriguing. To analyze it based on Quran ayaat like this is excellent mashAllah. I think this could be done in many metaphysical and philosophical aspects. I'm curious on how other ayaat regarding Musa a.s. and Haroon a.s. can be interpreted and analyzed. For instance, there is a portion of ayaat when Musa a.s. returns from Mt. Sinai after 40 days, back to his community. He becomes upset and incense with the transgressions the community of bani Israel have fallen into during his absence. It seems his anger extends to Haroon a.s. - who states " oh son of my mother, do no grab/hold/wrangle my head and beard, the community would not listen to me and they almost killed me. I did not want to cause division within the community". How would you interpret and analyze these ayaat in regards to their relationship in comparison to the Prophet alayhi salaam and Ali alayhi salaam?
That’s a great question. I think Sheikh Azhar may have answered some of your questions in the lecture series he gave on Prophet Musa and Bani Israel last year
This one is about him interrogating Prophet Harun after the golden cow incident:
