For that matter he was trying to ticket her friend; the woman in pink kept interfering with him and coming after him, and finally he hit her to keep her off.
Love how it's always the cop's fault in these situations. "Duuuuhh are you serious?" Everyone is so eager to point out how this cop didn't necessarily need to retaliate against the girl, but nobody points out how stupid she is for assaulting a cop?
I live in Seattle, and can tell you the the cops here have a blind spot about jaywalking. I've seen officers go into full Barney Fife mode and bless out people who've merely stepped off the curb just as the "don't walk" sign flashes on.
When you're about to get a ticket for JAYWALKING, just take the ticket. I don't like the police as well, but I can atleast see those girls were acting wild.
He didn't directly punch her for jaywalking(which is illegal, js) but because he was trying to give her a ticket, which is a reasonable thing for him, a police officer, to do. When she started to resist and assault the officer( which is very illegal, just saying) is when he punches her. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she deserve special treatment. She had it coming.
For those of you in the dark easy to scream "RACIST!" or "UNETHICAL!" allow me to explain. The officer saw her jaywalk and was giving her a sitation, at this point she kept walking. Then he asked her to listen to him or else things would get worse, and she still didn't respect his authority. At this point he has the right to put her in cuffs but she resisted. From there on then her friend (a repeating offender of the same problem a year back) decided to assault the officer.
And to everyone asking his backup they were radioed before this CLIP started rolling...you can hear them responding towards the end of the video...and no you don't pull your gun out unless you intend to fire it...
He doesn't have to read her her rights at that time. That's a TV fiction. The rights can (and should) be read in the car on the way to the station. They can even be read to the accused once in the police station. The biggest thing that has to be remembered is that nothing can be used against her until those rights are read, and she cannot be incarcerated for any more than 24 hours before they are read to her either.
She thought she could do anything she wanted without consequences. If a policeman tells you to do something, then do it. If he's in the wrong, press charges. That's the way it works folks.
Since when does resisting arrest get you a slap on the wrist. Let the police do their job and do your job as a citizen and obey the rules and follow the proper procedures like the rest of us.
We live in a world where police officers are subjected to the constant mass criticism of cameras barely capable of speech. And then people ask why some officers act as harshly as they do, just so they can do their jobs and get out of that situation.
@GetBassedified I agree with you 100%. As a black male I feel that race had nothing to do with the issue. The girls could have been White Caucasian, Hispanic, Arab, or any other race and I feel the situation would have transpired all the same. These individuals were belligerent and needed to be dealt with
A crowd started to gather and they kept trying to just leave so he tried to physically restrain her. Then the friend, in pink, pushes the cop and he decks her in the face. -Johnnynumbskull
He has a gun and he could of just pulled that at any point, and trust me, that is bound to stop anyone approaching him. The woman would of left/ran if he hadn't been using both hands to restrain her so he couldn't really call for backup.
@VINNYMOR Get all the facts before you judge. This video does not show why the officer chose to arrest the girl. You don't get arrested for jaywalking. It is a different offense when you put your hands on an officer. No longer just a jay walking crime.
The officer reacted properly. the woman attacked him, she was the agressor, This wasn't about race. If the women had responded calmly to the officer, i'm sure it wouldn't have escalated to the point of physical violence.
anyone ever heard of RESISTING ARREST!! I was always taught don;t throw a punch unless u can take a punch. Seriously, this is one in which i think the officer was well justified. How about hold the young ladies accountable for their actions and let the officer do his job!!
and...why was nobody helping her? i mean i know the dude's a cop and could taze or shoot someone and could just arrest her for assault but do cops of today truly, truly care if someone jaywalks now? seriously. hope that cop gets fired cause both the punch and pointless arrest was uncalled for
You guys can't be serious - for jay walking : the rule is no matter what someone say NO ONE has the right to physical violence. As a police officer he should be trained to stay in control - AND HERE IT COMES : IF I had to handle MY WOMAN on ANY public street like that because she mouthed off to me - MY ASS would be in cuffs. SO what gives cops the right to operate OUTSIDE the law. Cop should have stayed in control and call for back up - let a female officer handle the situation.
Being a police officer is a very hard job. A police officer has to be friendly but at the same time a law and order warrior. Thats a very hard job and deserves the upmost respect. A police officer must know when to use force when he sees a situation getting out of hand. This is exactly what this police officer did. Thank God this situation didn't turn into a riot. The police officer didn't do anything wrong. And he surely didn't punch a woman in the face for jaywalking.
Both women (Angel Rosenthal & Marilyn Levias) had prior criminal records. The girl who got punched (Rosenthal) was arrested (which you can see in another YT-video) on suspicion of third-degree assault on an officer, a felony. "The school district's central office had requested increased police monitoring because they were concerned about the number of students jaywalking."
That is situation escalation, a big no no my friend. If there is any one thing other than the fact that he didn't read her rights as he lead her to the car, which he could have easily done after the clip ended(Not that I think it matters, she mentioned the rights so she knew them), it would be removing his gun from the holster.
Your suppose to talk and keep talking and call for back up! But, the cop does not have the right to lay his hands on you in such fashion like this cop did!
The police officer was stopping her friend for jay-walking across an extremely busy arterial in Seattle (Ranier Avenue, a little south of the central area by Franklin Highschool) Her friend (The pink one) and her decide to ignore the cop and keep walking off even when he tries to stop them. He wasn't going to arrest them just let them know that it was dangerous and that there is an overpass for pedestrians. They continued ignoring him and he stopped the friend. -Johnnynumbskull
Scenario 1: “Oh jeez, you got me (smile), yep, my apologies officer I’m a space cadet this afternoon without my coffee. Lesson and ticket, guess I won’t be doing that again (slight belly laugh).” Reaction: Officer gives ticket (some lost money) and smiles back, or a small pep talk and you go on your merry way singing tu tu too tuu! Scenario 2: “Wha’? What the hell are you talking about? 100 dollars, motherfucker!, Nigga get your off of me! (push, shove)…. Bam!.. Race card? Please.
the cops do not have the right to just arrest someone over anything...jaywalking is not a crime you should be arrested for...END OF DISCUSSION..the girl should of been given a ticket and then thats it...the situation escaluated because the officer was out of line to arrest someone for jaywalking...
Both women (Angel Rosenthal & Marilyn Levias) had prior criminal records. The girl who got punched (Rosenthal) was arrested (which you can see in another YT-video) on suspicion of third-degree assault on an officer, a felony. The white cop wasn't laying-in-wait just to arrest a black person. Quote: "The school district's central office had requested increased police monitoring, because they were concerned about the number of students jaywalking."
That cop did exactly what he was supposed to do. He should of hit both of them to control the situation. Female or male you want too resist a cop you pay the consequences. She would of just gotten a jaywalking ticket but now she will be arrested for resisting arrest. Hats off to you cop!!!!!!
@4002654 totally agree with you. There was nothing sexist or racist about this. You have one suspect resisting arrest and another grabbing him physically from behind. Either one could have grabbed his weapon or they both could have overpowered him and the situation would have escalated to something pretty ugly.
Cops are taught to use the necessary force to affect an arrest. Force is used until resistance stops or the arrest is made. At what point did she comply? The answer: at no point.
I tell you one thing, had that been a black officer striking a white teenager..his azz would have been fired from the police department...anywhere in the united states...Black Police officers still know there place in this society....
They broke many laws in 2 minutes. 1. Jaywalking 2. Resisting Arrest 3. They shouldnt have talked cause everything they say will or can be used against them. 4. Interefering with a Cop 5. Battery and Assault on the COP first. (pushing and shoving) WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU STRUGGLE or RESIST AN ARREST? it just get you more into trouble. -.- and he was just trying to save you life so you dont get your ass run over by a dam car.
The officer punching the woman after being pushed was excessive force but I disagree that all of this was caused from merely jaywalking. From the looks of it, one woman was resisting arrest and the other seemed to be obstructing justice. This officer didn't handle it completely right in my opinion, but he's human and was in a very stressful situation with a couple of women that were actiing very stupid. That's my take from the little I could see in this video.
This police officer's actions were totally justified. The normal reaction when confronted by Police is not to swear, raise your voice or put your hands on him/her. Once you cross that line you will reap what you sow. He responded after being shoved. He was obviously out numbered and had to diffuse the situation quickly. The media is having a field day with this video minus audio. He didn't even punch her that hard, she was backing up and the crowds reaction makes it seem worse.
You definitely do not see what laws she broke and that the officer had more than enough motives to do what he did. Just read the top comments and you'll understand.
Look I am a black man and I know I may be talked about for this but ole girl was wrong, she had no business in that. She needed to keep to herself and she would not have been punched. Did he need to hit her in the face maybe not, but the fact of the matter is he is human just like everyone else. People want to make it about race, but lets be honest she was acting ghetto as hell yall know it. If it was a black cop and white woman iggas would be praising that shit, its crazy she was wrong!!!
what is he suppose to do, push her back? this isn't middle school justice, this is real life the cop had to do whatever he felt was right to get the situation under control. after he hit her once she was clearly submissive enough. if he had hit her repeatedly then it may have been brutality but to me everything felt very appropriate.
Why the fuck is this guy saying "Are you serious?" throughout the whole video after the police officer punches? One of the females harass the cop, and then gets popped in the face. Another one is resisting arrest...
Im no fan of cops. but she was being an asshole from minute one. YOU DO NOT RESIST ARREST! YOU CALL A LAWYER LATER. This video is going to help the cops get off because it shows a potentially dangerous situation for the officer.
Jaywalking my ass, that was an obstruction of the law, she was helping out someone who is going to be convicted by pushing him out of the way. She put herself there, and she paid for it
If you resist arrest the officer has the right to use force to restrain her.
She didn't get punched in the face for Jaywalking. She got punched in the face for pushing an officer.
he was obviously assaulted and he used all neccessary force to protect himself and aprehend the suspect.
The woman was not cooperating sh resisted arrest and I think the officer handled the whole affair very well. respect
Says the good cop sucker.
Cop handled it well
For that matter he was trying to ticket her friend; the woman in pink kept interfering with him and coming after him, and finally he hit her to keep her off.
We need 500 cops like this in Oakland, Ca.
When you're about to get a ticket for JAYWALKING, just take the ticket. I don't like the police as well, but I can atleast see those girls were acting wild.
He didn't directly punch her for jaywalking(which is illegal, js) but because he was trying to give her a ticket, which is a reasonable thing for him, a police officer, to do. poor girl she's so embarrased that she got arrested in front of her homiez
but, is he serious?
that cameraman mister, is spamming "are you serious" button.
agree 100%, its amazing those pieces of trash have been able to function this long in society without being tossed in prison yet
She's lucky she didn't get arrested too
Punching her in the face like that, man that cop needed a beat down.
Aggravated assault against a police officer no racism please.
oh no..are you serious..ahh.. are you fucking serious..ahh.. are you serious.. are you serious!!
For those of you in the dark easy to scream "RACIST!" or "UNETHICAL!" allow me to explain. The officer saw her jaywalk and was giving her a sitation, at this point she kept walking. From there on then her friend (a repeating offender of the same problem a year back) decided to assault the officer.
How the F did these women think they could behave violently towards the police and get away with it ?
I love how they're trying to vilify the cop.
I totally agree with you 100% and those who disagree are the same idiots in the background saying she never grabbed the officer.
Cop definitely had the right to do that.
And to everyone asking his backup they were radioed before this CLIP started rolling...you can hear them responding towards the end of the video...and no you don't pull your gun out unless you intend to fire it...
No brutality here. I see an officer very restrained for the situation he was in. I personally would have stood clear and tased.
He doesn't have to read her her rights at that time. That's a TV fiction. The rights can (and should) be read in the car on the way to the station. They can even be read to the accused once in the police station. All Im saying is, if I hit a girl like that she'd still be asleep.....
The officer has already tolerated more than necessary. You don't resist arrest. If the arrest is unjustified, you get a lawyer.
that one girl is luck he didn't smash her face into the windshield.
She thought she could do anything she wanted without consequences. If a policeman tells you to do something, then do it. If he's in the wrong, press charges. That's the way it works folks.
Click bait much? Jesus. He punched her cause she was putting her hands all over him. Wtf was she expecting?
justified imo. equal rights? equal right to get punched in the face.
wow... this is sooo satisfying to watch over and over.
I'm a black man and I would have punched her in the face also. And I hope he went and arrested the other cow in pink.
Outnumbered cop, resisting arrest and trying to fight with a cop. Gee I wonder why she got hit? Well done the man in blue.
The cop had every right for what he did....they were attacking him he was defending himself.
My vote goes for the cop..if you fight a cop, don't be surprised with a punch to the face
All of this could have been avoided if people can just swallow their pride.
Kudos to the cop. Serves that woman right.
she pushes her so he punches her? where is the justification in that?
if that was somebody's mom or sister in my hood that cop woulda got his head bashed in...
Never fight the police.
Since when does resisting arrest get you a slap on the wrist. Let the police do their job and do your job as a citizen and obey the rules and follow the proper procedures like the rest of us.

You are 100% correct!!!

All I know is Carl Winslow would never have let this happen!
The guy saying are you serious is really annoying...Cop did his job good on him.
He has a gun and he could of just pulled that at any point, and trust me, that is bound to stop anyone approaching him. The woman would of left/ran if he hadn't been using both hands to restrain her so he couldn't really call for backup.
Goodbye, zombie.
Seattle police have determined that the officer was completely under threat when one of the men standing near by revealed a revolver. Check 1:31
he's definitely serious.
You have the right to defend yourself in an unlawful arrest. Period. Get your heads out of your ass.
@VINNYMOR Get all the facts before you judge. This video does not show why the officer chose to arrest the girl. You don't get arrested for jaywalking. It is a different offense when you put your hands on an officer. No longer just a jay walking crime.

He gave her roller coaster face 😂
and...why was nobody helping her? i mean i know the dude's a cop and could taze or shoot someone and could just arrest her for assault but do cops of today truly, truly care if someone jaywalks now? seriously. hope that cop gets fired cause both the punch and pointless arrest was uncalled for
shes resisting and then the lady in pink forces her way in to it and is pulling on him. good job at puching her in the face

I think that he's pretty serious.
All I can say is Damn!!!!!!!!!
NO, are you Serious?
this guy is a hero , doing this stuff in being of all those black people

Either one could have grabbed his weapon or they both could have overpowered him and the situation would have escalated to something pretty ugly.
This was ugly, but you don't put your hands on a police officer.
Guess she shouldn't have shoved him.

YES! He is fucking serious! Do not resist arrest... She better be glad he dident use the pepper-spray.
yeah he hit you cause you pushed him....it is sad that his job involves protecting ungrateful, uncivil people like this.
You definitely do not see what laws she broke and that the officer had more than enough motives to do what he did. Just read the top comments and you'll understand.
these people have no idea about how the law works...

he did the right thing he defended himself and he should have beat up the camera man for saying all that crap
LOL WIN
Although if he's having this much trouble restraining a chick, idk how he would perform against the typical black male.
