Thanks for the video. That is a really great idea with a huge flaw. The top not being made out of hardwood or at least solid wood will fail over time, guaranteed. The dog holes will wear out. My thought is that you take their design, make your own version out of hardwood and make a video lol. There’s a good chance I’ll make my own out of hardwood in the future.
Great idea Shayne. I think I might actually do that. I’ve got some Baltic Birch butcher block that would be perfect! Thanks for the idea!
Not a bad little vise. Been looking into making a Moxon vise but this is a nice alternative that could be made even better. Thanks and the shirt is pure gold 😂 I need one 👌
I know I love that shirt, pretty funny huh!? Yeah I think the vise is definitely a great beginners vise, which is pretty much what I am when it comes to hand tools. I can definitely tell i might outgrow it some day but should last me a long while!
Love the shirt 😀
Thanks so much! I thought it was pretty funny. Will be breaking it out again around February 14th! 😂
Incredibly helpful for someone thinking about buying it. My one question is, when you were planing, did you have the vice screwed into your bench or did it just stay stable from the 4 rubber feet you mentioned? Many thanks.
Great question. You will definitely need to affix the smart vice to the bench with screws or bolts to do planing work. I just shot a few wood screws in the base of it and it holds up fine. Still use it today!
Great video and I've been thinking about getting this vise for a while. The one question I've had and which I wish you'd shown is whether the clamps racks when say clamping a 1 or 2x4 piece on one side of the screw. Does it clamp solidly or rack badly and not hold good. Not sure I explained my question right... Seems there are lots of times you would need to clamp a longer work piece hanging down on just one side of the vise screw. Does that hold it without racking?
Love the shirt too. Had to call the wife over to see it... lol
Excellent question and something I should have shown in the video. Your question makes complete sense. I’m going to head to my shop this afternoon and I’ll give you an answer. Thanks for watching!!
I tested out the racking of the clamp. It wasn't good... if you clamp a piece of wood to one side of the clamp without support on the other side, it definitely angles, and loosens up the clamping pressure on your workpiece. Won't really affect me as I usually add support to the other side, but something that I think is important to know. Thank you so much for the question. I was very interested to test that out myself this afternoon!
Dogg, you could've made a Moxon vise all on your own.
I 100% agree. I've actually been looking at the hardware for one for one of my other benches. Might do a video on it if I decide to pull the trigger!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork Do it Doggy style. We'd love to watch the build.
How many times can a person say "actual" in 11 minutes and 52 seconds? 🤣 Great video, thanks for posting!
Thanks so much for watching Frank!
