I really enjoyed your video. I will take on the task of reading the 3rd step every day like you suggested.
Glad it was helpful!
I love step 3 handing my life over to a high power God ,such a relief. 12 step program off AA promises a life beyond your wildest dreams sobriety rocks, i do anything because I didn't have anything i my heart .God will take care of me i love AA
Thanks Dr Kj. I work with young strugglers at a recovery high school in a virtual setting. I also write recovery/inspirational poetry trying to inspire others on the path of discovery and healing. Thanks for sharing, I am always looking for content to share with our kids.
You're welcome. I am so glad you are finding the resources helpful.
Very helpful regarding reading 12th tradition. I am just starting step 3 and will read daily. Thank you
Glad you found it helpful. Good luck with Step 3!
thank you, i have been in recovery for 25 years, this is the most importnat step to myself, i was in treament and a older man would come and teach us about God in a bible study, i got thirsty for God and found that was the the void in my life, and there was even a church next door, that year, 07 i got baptized and repented, and becamse a christian. I have fallen short many times since i have done this, i am 60 days clean now again, and my recovery is really a journey where i learn more and more, but now it seems to be stiicking and that voice of the devil tempting me to go and party again, has been silenced it seems like, your advice is greatr and really apreiciate your series, love and peace from vancouver canada bc, Union gospel mmisson 6 motnh treament program, Dave
I'm so glad you found something that worked for you. Wishing you many more years of successful recovery!!
I am in recovery for 13 years and working with other alcoholics. This step 3 takes all the heavy burden from us and give it to God who wants to take it so that I don't be crushed under due to my own self made god
Love this explanation!!
Thank you for this. I’ve started stepwork on my 3rd step w my sponsor tonight. I was assigned 3rd step homework again & I plan to incorporate reading the 3rd step from the 12 & 12, as u suggested. Thx so much. Truly! Namaste!!!
You're welcome.
I am in my first six months this of getting sober and attending AA meetings. The steps are intimidating to me. I feel like I just don't understand. I came across your videos today and have went back through step 1, step 2 and now step 3 with you. Thank you so much for explaining these and making them so easy to understand. I'm going to take your advice on reading g step 3 everyday to help me understand it more. Thank you 😁
Hi Jamie! Congratulations of your sobriety. Glad to know you are finding the videos helpful 💗
Thank you for your 3rd step perspective. I’m currently working on this one at 6 months sober following a relapse after about 2.75 years. Decided to try AA again and it’s been a really good decision. I plan to watch more of your videos as I go through the 12 step process.
Glad you're back on track and that you found this video to be helpful.
I didn't really get how to turn my will over until you made it so clear. Thank you so much! ❤
You are so welcome!
Thanks for your acknowledgement. As I said I have great respect for you, and only love for the help you give others. I admire your sobriety and your journey.
Peace
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Excellent share on Step 3! I have forwarded it multiple times!
Thank you, Bruce. I'm so glad to know you found it helpful and it's become a go-to resource for you to share 🙏💜
Thank you so much. I think I'm going to read and apply step three in my life .
Great!
Hello, I’m in step 3 and was a bit confused on how to do it. You’re video has help to break it down for me. Thank you 🙏🏽 ❤
All the way from Ireland I love your great information, 16 years in recovery and its wonderful to go over all the steps with a fresh look at it again . Just to say i have had a brilliant recovery one day at a time and I never have been happier. the very best wishes to anybody struggling with the program. Just keep coming back the magic will happen . Thank you Dr Foster wonderful so see your channel . may the higher power be with you and your son .
Thank you, Robert. Glad you are enjoying my videos. Sorry for the late reply. Just catching up with my comments. Appreciate your kind words and support.
So glad I heard this video today! I have been reading step 3 over and over to truly own it. It has now deeper meaning to me that turning my thoughts and actions over is the main core of this step. I can use this step now in my daily living.
Hi Jewel - Glad you found it beneficial.
Excellent! Great clarity. Heading towards 27 years of sobriety and this step is definitely my anchor. BTW the Buddha next to you reminds me of my several statues in my apartment whereby they to serve as points of calm and focus. Thanks again.
Thank you. Congratuations on your 27 years. Yes, I love the satute. It is very sentimental to me.
You don't want to follow step 3 totally then putting on your own God like that Budda for peace. That's why in the Bible says that we are blinded by devil like the one behind you Etc. making our own gods like our own. 😊
Hi I joined AA in 1983 and my sponsor told me some of the same things. You are doing very well at explaining step 3. Thanks for some of the reminds. Good job👍🏼
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for your videos! They are so in depth and so very helpful. I have a sponsor but I also watch and listen to your videos on the step that I’m working on weekly.
I'm glad you are finding them helpful!
Thank you so much for these videos.
I've just recently started my journey and I was struggling to understand the first 3 steps 🙏
Your videos are very informative and make the 12 steps easy to understand.
Thank you sharing of your own experiences this is invaluable
♥️
Hi Julie - You're welcome. I'm so glad to know you are enjoying the videos and finding them beneficial. I hope you enjoy your day 💜
Hey i have a drinking problem went AA meeting in 91 stayed til 92 .it was very good but i didn't work the program in my life..
I went back drinking for 20 years after...
Now iam sober again
For 79day now
Congrats on your sobriety! Keep going 🙏
@@DRKJFOSTER TK you so much
I've been following you with my sponsor and your suggestions I am on step three and am beginning the daily reading of step three out of the 12×12 excited to check back in thirty days!
Hi Tawny - Please do let me know how it's going for you with Step 3. Thanks for watching!
I have just completed 60 days. I have been relying on local meetings and even using the app to find meetings when I travel. My home group has many options and I am focused on staying engaged. A lot of the people around my in my "daily" life are used to a different version of me. They are looking for the same guy who would have shown up 61 days ago. I do not want him to come back. I call him D3. My job requires a lot of travel and entertainment, which involves the use of a corporate credit card. Drinks are expected. This is not a tradition that I want to embrace again. My team members called me the Designated Drinker (hence the D3 Designated Drinker Drew) because I always did that and I never embarrassed the company. I was well behaved. Unfortunately, no one knew the rest of the story. That part, is what brought me to my first meeting.
Another great video 😊 I will definitely use your reading Step 3 all month. 👍💕💞
Thanks, Maria 💜
Same here KJ, I have always believed in God, so I didn't have a Big problem with that area, however, I didn't know how to turn my will and life over to the care of God. I like how you made it easier to do step 3 for people who don't believe or have a hard time with God. It will be very helpful for when I work with people in the future. Thank you
Thank YOU, Roxanne 💜
love the simplicity..i am complicated, i needed this step 3.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for explaining and making it easier to comprehend.
You're very welcome!
Must agree. I came here because I had a very empowering conversation with a fellow member of the recovery community after a meeting. My sponsor is out of town for a couple of weeks and I didn't think that would be a problem. Thing is, I had several emotional crises arise and despite using the tools I've had suggested, I was not able to deal with it effectively. After the hour or so I spent with a fellow member who explained clearly the mechanics of how they "manage" feelings, how that translates into their personal way of "working" the serenity prayer and "working" the third step, I felt a new appreciation and a new understanding of how I, personally, was going to be able to work Step 3. Reading it from the 12 and 12 and The Little Red Book was on my mind.
The thing is, reading it every day for a month is a wonderful 'homework' assignment. It's an action that I can use to further my growth and understanding. I'm so grateful for the forces that have put all of the pieces together for me.
Best of luck to you, Yolanda, and thank you, KJ, for your clear and concise video.
Thanks your teachings are really motivating
It's my pleasure
I enjoy listening to the Steps. Very inspirational . Thank and bless you❣️
You are so welcome
Hi there. Thanks for your suggestion. Gonna try it since I’m in the program for 3years but still struggling with step 3
Hi Emanuela - Great! I hope you find it helpful.
Very helpful and my experience has been the same. Hard to understand at first, but my sponsor explained just accept that you are willing and determined and that helped with step 3. THANKS!!
You're welcome, Auburn. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.
FANTASTIC SUGGESTION READING STEP 3 EVERYDAY FOR A MONTH
Hi Mario - Glad you found it helpful. It really helped me! Sorry for the late response. I've been down and out with Covid for the past 2 weeks.
Very interesting and simple tips, like reading step 3 from the 12/12 book every day for a month, i like it:) i can only attend online AA meeting as a result of Covid restrictions and now i'm glad i found this channel. You have a new subscriber, have a nice day, From France 💜
Hi RabbitMrWelsh from France! I apologize for the late response. I'm in the midst of a move and it's been hectice this week. I'm glad to know you are enjoying my content and finding it to be helpful. I hope you have a wonderful day there in France 💜 I'll be there myself in April. I can't wait.
@@DRKJFOSTER Wow, thank you, i hope you'll have a great time visiting my country :)
My brother went to AA for 6 weeks upon stopping his drinking cold turkey. This is 24 years ago, he didn't drink and has had no need for meetings etc.
Love your video’s! I am new to recovery and your openness is very welcoming!
Hi Sonja - Welcome to recovery! It's a wonderful journey of growth and discovery. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video and please feel free to reach out if I can help in any way. Have a great day!
Thank you for your service it's helping me
Glad to hear it is helping you.
Enjoyed your Step 3 insight Dr. KJ Foster
Hi Ricky - Sorry for the late reply. It's been a busy week. I'm so glad to know you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave me a comment regarding your experience with the video. I hope you are having a great week!
This has been extremely help... keep up the good work I need some work sheet
I'm glad you've found it helpful. You may want to download the Fostering Resilience app. It's free and has some additional resources you may find helpful.
Wonderful explanation
Glad you liked it
What a beautiful chapter 💜
Thanks, Karen!
I'm new to the 12 step program. I'm just trying to understand how to work the steps. No one has ever really explained them to me
I hope you found the video helpful.
Tradition 11 comes to mind.
Hi Kathryn - I'm not sure how Step 3 has anything to do with the 11th tradition, but I'm not so naive that I don't know what you appear to be implying. I believe you may be misunderstanding Tradition 11. Perhaps I will create some videos to help others better understand the traditions.
Here are a few key points:
#1 I am not a member of AA/NA or any other 12-Step program, although I did participate in AA for 10 years. That said, I've also participated in Smart Recovery, LifeRing, Recovery Dharma and Celebrate Recovery. And honestly, if I were "promoting" any recovery program, it most likely would not be AA.....
Which leads me to point #2 I am not promoting AA/NA or any other 12-Step program nor am I promoting any particular AA group.
#3 No one can dictate my personal anonymity but me (another area of much confusion among 12-Step members). I have a right to break my own anonymity, but again I am not a member of AA, so my anonymity should not even be in question. I'm only sharing this (relative to anonymity) because this is another concept that many people misunderstand.
Thanks very much for sharing your comment and giving me the opportunity to clarify this common misunderstanding relative to the 11th Tradition.
@@DRKJFOSTER Sounds like I hit a nerve. And yes, no one can dictate your personal anonymity. Having AA in the title of many of your UA-cam videos might lead some, especially those new to recovery, to believe you speak for AA. Just a thought in the spirit of "our common welfare."
@@KatieStecher No, not at all. I appreciate the opportunity to explain my positiom and appreciate yours. The many people who have been helped outweigh any of the criticisms. I think I've made it pretty clear I dont speak for AA. U only soeak from oersonal experience having done the Steps myself and that is what I am sharing about. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.
I’m doing the 12 steps for ACA. I wonder if I’d benefit equally by reading Step 3 in their book everyday for a month.
It sounds like a good idea to me. I don't think it can hurt. Thanks for watching.
Will try this assignment! Salaam, Nadia
Trying your assignment for this step🌷
Let me know how it turns out.
Love your videos so easy to understand xx
Thank you, Lisa. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for your help
Hi Wendy! Glad you found it helpful!!
I am new to sponsorship and have found your talks helpful. Do you have anything on sponsorship?
Not anything specific to sponsorship and I've been asked about this before. I'll have to create something.
Thanks for this
Yes where we connect in a lot of your work, belief is 'almost the secularisation, or key aspect of the step ' with no reference to God.
If you do step 3 by the big book, it's obvious what it's saying, move from self will to your prayer connection to 'the care of the god of your understanding'.
For me, I have to accept help, and I have to act on that help and live daily in a different way... listening to others, the group the literature and quiet time guidance.... right I'm gonna live in a different way.....
You're welcome. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos.
Right now I’m on step three
Good luck to you!
Gives me a understanding
Glad it helped.
Iam 6 months sober and can u summarize what step 3 means to u
Like the task of reading step 30 days. A myth is not something that is false.
Thanks for watching 💜
I going to do it!
Great. Let me know how it goes for you 😊
Well done 👏
Glad you enjoyed it and I apologize for the late response. I hope you have a wonderful day!
I wish you did these videos like 4 times a week.
Aw, thanks Greta 💜 I wish I could do them more often as well.
Step #4 I’m determined
Very helpful Thank You!
Glad to know you found it helpful 💜
Ty this helped me
You're welcome. So glad it was helpful for you.
Thank you for sharing your experience. This helps a lot. I’ve been on step three going on one year and it doesn’t make much sense to me because I’ve been agnostic all my life and I’m just formulating what a higher power means to me.My sponsor refuses To let me move on to step four until I start surrendering and running things in my life past them. Even though I tell him I pray every day for God’s will and the strength to carry it out, that’s not enough. I want to get past this step already! I feel stuck and frustrated and resentful towards my sponsor. Any suggestions? TIA
My recommendation would be to get another sponsor. Your sponsor has major control issues. Spending a year on Step 3 is ridiculous!
@@DRKJFOSTER TY. I’m seriously considering your suggestion
@@DRKJFOSTER that is a spectacularly stupid statement.
Step 3 takes years and years of experiencing different challenges sober.
I say this with 19 years of sobriety.
@@howard1beale I believe you are misunderstanding my statement. To keep a sponsee on Step 3 and not allow them to move on to complete the rest of the Steps is spectacularly stupid. The goal is not to do the Steps one time but to do them over and over again. You are incorporating them into your daily life. To keep soneone on Step 3 and not allow them to move on to Step 4 until they've satisfied your standards is ludicrous and indicative of control issues.
@@DRKJFOSTER that's not what I said. I said it takes years to really " get" higher power sometimes.
Anyway, who elected you hall monitor? Lol. You aren't the oracle. You're just another drunk like me.
Imho God puts sponsees and sponsors together. The sponsor or the sponsor or both decide when that relationship should come to an end, not an outsider
Hi KJ, my name is Barry M from our 12 step meeting (Serenity Group) Pialba QLD Australia. Easier to understand handing my thoughts and actions over to the group is very helpful. I will share this at our meeting today. I'm watching your video's on thw steps as we work though them. These week is step 3. Your detail is very helpful for us to understand the steps. Thankyou Barry M (Sunday Serenity Group Steps meeting.)
Hi Barry - I'm so glad to hear that my video was helpful. Thanks so much for watching and for introducing yourself. Please give my best to your Serenity Group :-)
If you hand over your thoughts and actions to a higher power or God wouldn't that then rob yourself of accountability? Working on step 3 myself
Hi Indigo. No, that's the whole point. You are asking for help to direct your thoughts and your thinking, so you are being responsible by doing that.
Do you have any experience with Step 3? Did you find this helpful? Please LIKE and SHARE with anyone who may benefit. Thank you 💜
Step 1 is the most important one. AA is not a magical effortless cure. AA is a fellowship of like minded people enjoying each other's company. AA can help anyone who truly wants to stop drinking.

Thanks for watching.
Love the idea of turning over your lives to God :)
Thank you for watching and for subscribing 💜
I really love this as I am doing step 3 now and your UA-cam channel came up first !!! Thank you for making these . I am hoping I can win a gift card bc I really could use the extra cash xoxox please pick me !!
Hi Robin - Thanks for watching and I'm glad you found the video to be helpful. Unfortunately, this video was filmed a few years ago and that is an old promotion :-(
My experience-- religion and spirituality are not separate. Religion is built on spirituality. It is geared towards God. The risk of spirituality is increase in self centered ness. Geared toward the self. my invention of God. Me me me.
Yes, that can happen.
First of all this content is overall good and helpful -
It looks like you are coming from a Budda perspective on religion. Are you aware that Bill Wilson and founders wanted to name the program The Way Out (because Christianity was called The Way) & James Gang ( because the program comes from the book of James) both were taken when they checked at the Library of Congress so they went with AA. Not to mention the using of the Serenity Prayer and Lord's Prayer are both are Christian. The number 12 is a holy number biblically. Also, 2022 is from the Christian calender that it has been two thousand twenty two years since the birth of Christ.
Is it fair to ignore all that and promote Buddhism in your video?
Hi Jamie - I'm actually a Christian who also appreciates the teachings of Buddhism. I am not trying to promote anything. I am sharing my knowledge and experience regarding Step 3. I am very aware of the history of AA, and it's Christian roots. My goal is to share this information from a spiritual perspective, without any personal religious bias. There are 12-Step groups for every belief system - religious, agnostic, and atheist. My first sponsor was Jewish. The "HOW" of recovery is honesty, open-mindedness and willingness. 12-Step recovery is not just for Christians, nor do I believe it should be promoted as a Christian program. That being said, I appreciate you watching and for sharing your thoughts and giving me the opportunity to do the same. I hope you have a blessed day.
@@DRKJFOSTER Thanks. I fully understand that we can choose whatever we want and reject the Bible and we should be free to do so. I had a white light spiritual experience in church and it's clear to me who God is at this point. Many people don't know the roots or ever come to a full knowledge of the truth. You say you are a Christian but there is only evidence of Buddhism in the video. Food for thought. Have a nice day.
@@jamiejay7633Reliance keeps us sober, not defiance. The great thing about the program is we are all allowed to have our own beliefs.
@@presentmoment6542 We have free will so we can absolutely choose our beliefs, actions and to practice or not practice the program.
AA began from a Protestant evangelical movement called the Oxford group which Bill was a member. Oxford group was branded as 1st century Christianity.
I'm glad we are inviting to everyone but to not see who the God was that guided our conception and formation of the 12 steps is folly.
A higher power of our understanding.
Love and tolerance. May you and yours enjoy the gifts of the program.
Always 💕
A chain shout-out
Hi Anthony - not sure what that means?

Congrats!
Hope you'll reply to this. Respectfully I disagree with your interpretation of a higher power being other humans in our AA group. I enjoyed your talk on step 10, and I thought I'd check out your talks on Steps 2 and 3. My comments are from The Big Book and the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. AA is a Spiritual Solution. Your concept of a higher power being the group of other humans in AA, or any other humans, is misleading, and is not a Spiritual Solution. Your take is Psychology, and something other than Steps 2 and 3. Of course the group and other humans are there for us, and hopefully we are there for them. But that is not, and will never be a Spiritual Solution. And based on the diminishing results in AA, as it has morphed into group therapy, and not about working the 12 steps, Psychology is not effective. I like and respect everything about you, but I disagree with your take on what a higher power is, and how to apply Steps 2 and 3. I won't comment on how to do 2 and 3, as its all in writing in the Big Book. Thanks for allowing me to comment.
Dr. Foster - Is it your policy to only reply with comments that agree with you or commend you? Please reply. Hope you'll reply to this. Respectfully I disagree with your interpretation of a higher power being other humans in our AA group. I enjoyed your talk on step 10, and I thought I'd check out your talks on Steps 2 and 3. Hi Garrison - I reply to comments generally twice a week, as my schedule is very compressed and I can overwhelm myself by trying to respond every day. Sunday is a day that I always take time to respond to comments and then it varies throughout the week. If a comment comes through and it's a simple easy response, then I might just respond from my phone, depending upon where I am and what I'm doing. That being said, I've been especially busy lately because my son is home from university and I haven't seen him for months, so I've been spending every available moment with him. I apply to all comments. Please see my response to your previous comment. As for my take being psychology and that AA has become group therapy, I don't believe that to be true, but you have a right to your opinion. It could be the difference between the groups I've attended compared to the groups you attend. There is certainly a variety of groups and the way they are conducted, based upon the members of any particular group. I am sharing from my own experience and what has worked for me. You have a right to disagree with how you view a Higher Power, but what is not debatable is what has worked for me. I'm approaching 14 years of sobriety in July and my husband has almost 20 years. I wish you much continued good luck with your own recovery.
Isn't part of being on the program is to have an open mind. I agree with alot of what you say depending on other human beings being your higher power.
Unfortunately this is what happens with alot of members.
They see what they want in others and put others on Pedestals . God forbid the Pedestals falls . That let's a person to sincerely go for the search of their higher power A power greater than any human .
We need to trust in whatever helps on the day.
May you all find that power now .
Well wishes to all .
Stay safe, sober and sane
Blessings x
@@ebb.D Thanks for your thoughts. First let me say that KJ does so much for many, and I respect and admire her! My own experience using The Big Book and what it says in the Steps about "a Power greater than myself," has been unbelievable, so I emphasize it. That others get better using humans... I'm glad for them, and I didn't mean to be critical, just pointed out the actually steps and what it says. But more and more people have issues with power greater than self. So I get that whatever works is sometimes cool for now. Peace
