It could bolster her defense and potentially get some charges dropped or pleaded down. If the gun isn't hers, and it was put in her bag without her knowing, a defense attorney could (maybe) put reasonable doubt that the gun isn't hers. It does matter if someone else was in the car. It complicates the story, makes it less clear how much she is responsible for.

As someone in the Firearm Industry I can confirm this is a longstanding enigma of guns materializing from nothingness into complete random places

It's become such a phenomenon that emergency rooms are overwhelmed with people who were simply walking down the street and a firearm just spawned in front of their head, or people that are walking downstairs and a pistol just shows up as they put their foot down, only to be maimed or crippled from the ensuing fall

I have had that happen to me as well. totally bums me out cause usually its in a caliber I don't have yet and then I end up having to buy new ammo, new reloading dies, new reloading supplies, etc etc..
