People seem to forget how impactful was the order of Decimation, at this point of the Great Crusade, the idea of Astartes killing Astartes was still an impossibility, brotherhood and the heroism of their endeavor was still vivid in most of the legions, was hard even to a Space Marine kill another Space Marine from another legion, the action was even worse when it was limited to ones of the same legion in such a slow manner. This was more than a punishment, much more than that. This was Perturabo Martyr Complex at its peak Hear me, Perturabo always felt used and any love he felt was only because of his usefulness until the Emperor found him. Then He found his Legions, hundreds of thousands of warriors that literally loved him almost unconditionally. He had what he wanted, and what he did? Decimation. Why? To expunge himself of the same weakness he expunged from his sons. To show that he was willing to do anything for his Father, anything. To become truly the Lord of Iron that The Emperor needed.
Dunno man, this decimation thing always sounded like the authors needed to make Peter Turbo bad from the start, if the guy is all smart and stuff, he wouldn´t do such things u know.

He thinks he's so smart and cold hearted that any decision he makes is because he has to and never takes his emotions into account because he doesn't even realise it is affecting his very decisions. Perturabo is so perfect yet so flawed man, he's an amazing character from a book stand point
If the IV was able to do this, and overcome their emotions and be Iron...they are the most terrifying Legion of all. To be that cold and calculating, there is very little that can stop the Iron Warriors...the Emperor truly lost a great force when they turned.
Bah- if that is their goal they where never going to be anything after the war, if they even make it that far, this is a cold, and worthless action, you’ve inflicted 10% casualties for *no reason* this Sargent was apparently a great man, and ever lessen learned here could have been learned actually winning a war, and achieving something. By killing a random 10th of their legion all you have done is convinced your men that they are not men, but tools, tools don’t have a reason to fight, and so will fail.

That's what your enemy would like to pull off without firing a shot. Don't do it yourself. Perturabo was a cool character but killing your own sons is incredibly dumb for someone so smart.

Greetings everyone; I've finally got around to making a YT account - mostly so I can answer questions on UA-cam regarding my 40K stories Paul has so graciously hosted on this channel. I am the author of 'Choices' (Black Legion), 'Decimation' (pre-Heresy Iron Warriors), 'No Good Deed' (Lamenters), 'Decent of the Angel' (Blood Angels/Sangiunius) and the upcoming 2-part Night Lords story currently in production. Guilliman actually threw a fit when he found out about the decimation...their Legions had served together in the past and if I remember correctly he personally knew some of the warriors that were killed...
It's always bothered when people, especially those who supposedly have military knowledge, constantly misuse the term Decimation. It's refreshing to see it used in all it's horrific accuracy.
More than other primarchs. Perturabo understood that Astartes were not human. They were tools built and conditioned to fight the emperors crusade. No more human than the bolters in their hands or the armour around their bodies. The lord of iron realised he had to shatter this illusion of humanity to allow his legion to reach its full potential.
In sacrafice of what the Emperor wanted them to be though. We all know that the Emperor didn't mind for the Astartes to be used the way Primarchs like Perturabo did, because they were certainly weapons yes. But the Salamanders? The Blood Angels? That was truly his vision for the Astartes. Noble warriors, the protectors and guardians of humanity. Humanity. Something many of the Primarchs forgot

Something Malcador picks up on during the book Master of Mankind and just kinda points it out. Same thing happens during one of the Siege of Terra novels where he speaks to Mal and says that chaos took his sons from him and he's really mad and sad about it. I mean the whole reason Horus wounded him so bad was because he let him and didn't want to kill his boy. A father killing his son isnt right, Big E knew that...
Absolutely Brilliant! Decimation then decimation,regardless of rank & honors seems a rather wasteful order,but cold was the Lord of Iron. I could taste the mixed and conflicted thoughts & emotions of the Iron Warriors tasked with purging their own battle brothers,marvelously creative & believably narrated! Damn...that was a punch to the gut...I think outside of friendly-fire incidents and honor-duels, this was the very first time Space Marines deliberately killed each other in large numbers. And it was their own *primarch* who ordered them to do it, and in the most personal, visceral way possible. That squad of Iron Warriors were Terran-born and had likely served together for decades, if not for a century...and now they must beat to death the man who had led them for so long...I can't even imagine the psychological damage that must have caused...very brutal and grimdark; excellent production, Vox. You can voice Space Marines like no other. Time to go listen to 'Choices' and 'RUST' again... Also, imagine that this Iron Warrior is the same one who fights/beats the Lamenter in the 'Don't Go' story. It would certainty explain his attitude and actions towards an Astartes whose actions and creed are in complete opposition to his own

They seem to resonate with me also. I was never a huge fan of the iron warriors when I was growing up, but they have quickly become one of my favourite factions in the universe

That was absolutely brutal and chilling. Killing one of your own for no crime or failure. Doing it in the most visceral manner possible. Living with yourself afterwards. Strengthened but broken all in the same instant.

The trauma of that event was absolutely vivid. All three of the stories in this series have been excellent. I’m definitely going to listen again. I’m leaning heavily towards this one being my favorite.

I wonder if Peturabo looked at his order of decimation and then looked at the psycho World Eaters who had done the same thing and though "Do I REALLY want to be like Angron?" or if he just didn't know. BTW Decimation is actually made up of two chunks for those who didn't know. Deci meaning 10 or 10% and ation meaning denoting an action. So decimation means to destroy 10%. The Romans liked this little punishment until they realized it was doing more harm than good.

This really displays how grimderp warhammer can sometimes be. I understand the themes and emotions this is meant to create, but its impossible to seperate the story from the absurdity of killing 10% of your own millitary for no reason. The sheer insane amount of resources it took to create all those supersoldiers, the campaigns those tens of thousands of space marines could have fought and won for Perturabo, all thrown away in a few minutes for zero gain. No wonder they lost the war.
