Yes all of us in southern Nigeria the igbo, Yoruba, Edo, ishan urhobo-isoko, itsekiri, igala, idoma , plus the Nupe, Gwari and Ebirra of northern and central Nigeria are the same stock of people our cultures, languages and dna are closely related and we eat the same types of food prepared in different ways but from same ingredients, attires may vary but it is still the same concept. We are not as different from each other as we often think we are and that’s why it’s easy for us to coexist amongst each other and interact and intermarry etc. the Nupe, Ebirra and Gwari who are the same stock as southern Nigerians live in the middle belt and Northern Nigeria, and have been influenced by the Hausa culture. We are somewhat different from the Hausa and even more from the Fulani. The Hausa began to lose their original ethnicity over 1300 years ago when their ancestors began to adopt the Afro Asiatic pidgin Arabic dialect that was a trading lingua France spoken along the transaharan trade route. Some ethnographers believe many of those who became Hausa were probably originally Nupe, Yoruba, Gwari and other central Nigerians. Early adoption of Islam and islaminc culture from North Africa and Middle East further separated the Hausa and Kanuri From the non Islamic nations to the south. The Fulani are non indigenes and have their homeland in the Senegambia and Guinea regions in the westernmost part of West Africa but were nomadic so eventually spread across the Sahel up to Sudan. Although they are Muslim they are not as fundamentally religious as the Hausa and unlike the Hausa the Fulani have a more traditional subsaharan African culture and speak a Niger-Congo language language like southern Nigerians and most subsaharan Africans. They were elevated to god-like status 200 years ago after their leader Uthman Danfodio swept into Northern Nigeria conquering everything in site and setting up the Sokoto Caliphate covering practically what became modern northern Nigeria. The Yorubas were the main victims of this conquest and the civil wars that followed as they were forced out of their territory north of the river Niger with many seeking refuge in Ibadan and later Abeokuta etc fortunately the thick rain forest of the south halted the Fulani jihad from advancing further south as their horses could not penetrate the jungle and died of tsetsefly diseases. So we southerners were saved the agony of becoming feudal slaves of the invaders. The Hausas sadly became subjects of the minority Fulani invading population and that has remained so to this day as all the traditional rulers apart from the Etsu Nupe and the Shehu of Borno are Fulani emirs ruling over non Fulani subjects but the people are happy with it. The Hausa with their long Islamic traditions are much more devout and devoted in religious terms and this has made them able to adapt better to their conquest by the Fulani
