I think a problem with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is that the poetry of how the original trilogy was sort of a big middle-finger to the Nazis through a Jewish director was lost in the fourth one. But even if there was one to the Soviets it doesn't work nearly as well, or is even particularly memorable.

This scene drove me nuts when I was a kid, before we had a way to turn on subtitles. Did the sultan say “and tanks” or “and thanks”. Tank always seemed more logical, but Donovan saying “you’re welcome” gave me some doubt. These were the things I thought about instead of trying to get good grades. 🙄
What makes this extraordinarily funny is that Middle Eastern people cannot pronounce "TH" so Thanks sounds like "Tanks" - Only a Hollywood writer who lives in a city with a large persian community could think of this exchange in dialogue

I can imagine being an ally with Nazi Germany before ww2 included the prospect of being equipped with many new additions to one's arsenal. A refurbished ww1 era tank and other post-great war military vehicles would've been worthless to any country wanting to modernize. Difficult to say. German laws requiring registering of "wealth" by Jews, i.e., their assets, which eventually lead to plundering, didn't really start until late 1938/1939 and onward. This film is set in 1938, so it's difficult to know if that's what Donovan is referring to when he makes that comment.

So I leave this Topic out. BUT: I just want to Point out: I like it, that he, the Sultan, is the only one who get's what he liked. He get's what he wants. I mean, Donovan died drinking out of the wrong Cup. The Nazi SS Guy died in the Tank accident, falling of a cliff. Even Sallah loses the brother-in-law's car, yeah Indy kinda, sorta got what he wanted: He found his father again and were reunited and they were able to out unharmed but without the Grail. And Elsa? She also dies. Yes, Herny might got Illumination but the Sultan was kinda, sorta, the real winner. He liked and wanted the Rolls Royce and he got it. He might have lost some Men, and some Desert Vehicles, and a Tank. But he is still alive and even got his... "reward". So he is the winner, kinda. WHO AGREES?
