In the second of this UK-based round of Soft Focus, Ian saddles up beside Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, perennially fine composers, writers, and artists-and one-half of Sonic Youth. After twice escaping certain disaster, first at the hands of a disappearing interviewee and second at a few haphazardly placed plastic water bottles, Ian recaptures this episode and once again delivers on his promise of insightful, fruit-bearing conversation.
**
Come with Soft Focus as we retreat from the world and into the woods in search of some forgotten remedy for lame stream radio pollution, hideous condominiums, and brutish power tripping police. In between walks around the lake and contemplating existence, we'll interview some of the most intriguing artists of this underground rock and roll culture we covet as our own cure for the world's square minded music industry. In Noisey's long form interview show, Soft Focus, we delve deep into the minds and hearts of some of the most influential and seminal musicians to grace the underground stage.

Thurston Moore has the same sunglasses as my grandmother when she takes her Buick out for a drive.
fking LOL
littleteethkeith lmaoo
is this your grandmother?: ua-cam.com/video/srEchqeJi6g/v-deo.html
I’m writing my dissertation on your grandmother and her Buick and her sunglasses.
this was the best portlandia episode ever
RKTologist man you really ruined this episode for me, this is real shit a portlandia episode
Fred Armisen stole his bit from Ian Svenonius. Ian's been doing this since the early '80s.
Boo!
Wait isn't this a portlandia parody...I don't even know anymore
This was when VICE was still cool.
if Kim held a cigarette they would look like Goo cover brought to life.
miedqy0 ayy lmao
3 years ago? oh man...
wow, 2 weeks ago
stop stalking me :D
@@miedqy0 your comment has 123 likes........lol
Looks like they all woke up the morning after a party and started an interview all hungover
it's so sad that they're not together anymore
Just a friendly reminder that they’re being interviewed by one of the greatest frontmen ever.
Ah, a fan of the gospel yeh-yeh!
YES
who? never seen him before ever
Thurston is 50 something and he looks like he's 18. Da fuck yo?
***** It's the fact that he is super tall, skinny and has frumpy skater hair. And no chin.
+Uriah Apparatus. Haven't met too many jowly 18 year olds. But yes, he's holding up alright. :p
+Uriah Apparatus. the interview was 33 years ago lol
And Kim has ALWAYS looked like she's in her 50's.
Yeah he's got a baby face but he's too wrinkley to think he's 18. He does look like he could be younger then 50. But it's not surprising that he is. They both look good for their age though. It helps they weren't into drugs.
I just finished Kim's book, and we watching old interviews, what looked like cool detachment now comes across like seething hatred.
@@andrewb8235 no, I think his point is just that nobody knew what thurston and kim's relationship was like at the time
I saw SY twice on the very last tour. The last time I saw them was at the Soho Apple Store where they played a free, invite only gig. Their body language was truly obvious. I saw them "backstage" and was close when they walked out and greeted the audience. Nobody would have said they were married and had been for decades. Nobody. They were in different wavelengths.
@@cactaceous Were you at the waterfront gig? I do remember noticing that at the Prospect Park free show they did in '11, Thurston trying to get Kim back on stage and her apparently not wanting to so he had the audience start chanting "Kim, Kim, Kim."
J R Did they play Prospect Park in 2011 too?! I don’t remember that. I went to a gig they did in PP the summer before but was not able to get in so sat in the grassy hill outside and heard the gig. They did play by the East River in Brooklyn in the summer 2011 and I saw them then with Kurt Vile and that Sleater Kinney side project opening up.
J R I texted my friend if he remembers the timeline of SY gigs in 2011 since he was able to get to the Prospect Park gig early and got in and he says that was 2010. The East River gig was in 2011 and I was completely mistaken on when they played the Apple Store because I thought it was in 2011 during their last tour but he says he is certain the Apple Store gig was before the East River and Prospect Park gigs. He says the Apple Store gig was in 2010 or it could even have been in 2009. My timelines are all scrambled.
thurston is very well spoken and direct with his point of view. i think the dude is genuine and not as pretentious as people think
April Chems Definitely. It’s obvious in how he interacts in other videos that he thinks he walks on (unique, alternative) water. Reminds me of many guys in bands I went to art school with. Smug is the overall vibe I get.
@@brendantaylor3570 yup
You can't win.
Andy Warhol would have been proud of the three of them
That's not a good thing.
Velvet underground were sonic youth before sonic youth
Maybe but he would of never told us
This interview has such a weird energy lmao
but a good weird
Gave me Jim Carrey Cable guy vibes.
I love how comfortably uncomfortable this interview is lol. Sonic Youth are great
That’s the Soft Focus… 😂
My son 17 and daughter 21 both love Sonic Youth. So proud frankly.
Excellence!
You are a very good parent!
@@BoxTunnel I was at least good at one thing! Possibly a few other things.
I was in the audience for this. I had no idea it was on youtube so it was really cool to see again.
"I like to decant my water"
"These plastic bottles look awful on stage" 😆
Did Wes Anderson direct this interview? It's got that kind of deadpanfunny feel to it. Love it.
*deadpanning silently along a cross section of several highly thematic rooms*
There are certain people who have forgotten how to speak without a sarcastic or ironic tone. It’s a real problem
check out lou reed interviews - they're far more awkward, funny and confrontational
I'm surprised this didn't open some kind of hipster black hole from which no earnest sentiment can escape.
Save us from the Hipster Plague.
as a teenager growing up in the new york suburbs now, i can assure you that their influence goes beyond the 90's
daydream nation, evol, and goo are three of my favorite albums and im far from the only person my age who adores the band.
I come from a small town in England and my big brother came back with day dream nation on vinyl we got a few joints rolled and just blew our minds. I think we ended up with about 10 cds love everything they written.
Good for you, pal.
Wait sister sister may be the best though
thurston looks like mick jagger
"I don't really, uh, ya know I don't really care if anybody buys the records in a way, I just sort of, I-I like making 'em in a way..." - Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth
@2:40 “It’s over!” Yikes, that was a sign of things to come….
"They [the Pixies] never should have broken up. That's our problem."
As Kim sits stone cold nearby.
EndofMusic Around the 13 minute mark. Clearly the highlight of the interview. Sonic Youth and the Pixies are two indie rock gods who reached their peak in the late 80's. Noone can really measure up to them.
Sonic youths albums in the 2000s were pretty good too.

Kim deal was in the pixies NOT Kim Gordon lol what kind of fan are you if you get them mixed up?
Sonic Sunglasses
They hand them out at evey sonic business meeting
Sad that they aren't a band anymore : (
I love Thurston but hey: starts off by claiming SY was predominately feminist influence for him, then proceeds to take up 95% of the the talking time. Not saying it makes him a bad person, just that maybe feminism hasn't really reached that far into his skull.
You realize he cheated on his wife right?
@@verymud578 That, on the other hand might make someone a not altogether good person, yes.
He always liked the sound of himself and I think Kim was comfortable to let him talk in most public things. Even though I and most people would rather hear her take.
@@brendantaylor3570 That's a valid point.
Well, what do you expect? Thurston is a Leo and Kim is a Taurus. Leo Sun signs want all the attention. 😂😂😂
Great conversation. Interviewer on point.
ahahaha Ian Svenonius is the fucking bomb.
This interviewer is a national treasure.
this interview is great
Nate Nemetz They probably remember Vietnam really well.
is Thurston going welding?
anto hall - hahahahahahaha!! No but “Going Welding” is the name of his next album!!
Sure
I’m writing my PhD dissertation exploring the relationship between this interview and the movie Bull Durham.
really?
i've never seen em interviewed, thanks !
read kim's book: girl in a band. i love her.
Me too, she's brilliant. I didn't want the book to end! There has to be more!!!
She rocks my world.
Read it and now dislike her.
thanks, dude, strangely enough changing the quality works!
so glad to have come across this :
Soft Focus changed my life
Moore rocking the old-school Blue Blockers!
I love everything about this interviewer lol
Watch the nardwuar one
"Where'd Kim go?" and he looks behind his chair haha.
What a beautifully crummy and sweet interview! I'm becoming a real fan op Soft Focus, can they endorse my bands with their seemingly huge budget?
Audiences witnessing cool people like Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, plus hundreds of other musicians are so lucky! In Australia it is very expensive to travel to the Northern hemisphere. Off season it is approximately $1,900 AUS, plus there are basic accommodation costs. And accommodation in Europe in a one star hotel is expensive too. Then we have to wait more than a year before we get to see a great band because Australia is so far away.
Consider yourself lucky if you live in the Northern hemisphere, Oztralia is mainly desert and it is a 24 hour flight, even more if you there is no option but to purchase a cheap air ticket for cost saving. Australia is great if you like swimming among sharks and crocodiles. Or you could try a different Fish n Chip shop every night....
I’ve always wanted to be at the MCG on Boxing Day watching Australia v England 🏏 The northern hemisphere is fucked you probably better off where you are now.
So people are angy because they are using sunglassed? It`s just a fucking glass, let them be
Why all the hate in comments?
Maybe some folks need to express what Actually makes up their soul n' innards.
the interviewer looks like Murdoc from Gorillaz
Holy shit u right
I like how the interviewer says "I guess people are gonna be reincarnated as web pages, what do you think about that?" And Thurston doesn't bat an eyelid and responds
like he totally gets.
Or doesn't care.
I could get all sentimental mental and all, but, fark these guys made a good backing track to my life ;)
They're the Goo front cover
Wish they still did this 😪
When they walk in at the beginning you can tell the UK audience is blown away by how freakishly tall Thurston is
By God I am tired of not having a new sonic youth to listen to. I swear to this UA-cam video that i will one day make an album that is sonic youth/sabbath/tera melos/ punk/ween mixed. Seriously though. I mean it. Look me up one day.
Go listen to black midi lol
@@dasdead I don’t get the hype with black midi. I guess I’m too old? (I’m 41)
Thank you :) Very helpful person you are! :)
At first, I thought this interview was a "between two ferns"-style joke. Take off your sunglasses, you dinosaurs.
Brian Liddy roar
it is
Goo!
It would make a perfect SCTV episode.
I started concentrating on Ian's teeth and how it looks like he's traded in his pearly whites for a mouthful of black rocks and Stonehenge replicas.
The British audience probably didn't even notice, bad teeth being so normal in the U.K.
BayviewFinch liking that hilarious stereotyping - i assume your American?
BayviewFinch liking that hilarious stereotyping - i assume your American?
maximtrickett No. Why? Do you think all Americans think that, and only Americans?
BayviewFinch no, it just tends to be Americans that slag off the British for very little reason - i don't know, you could be Canadian but it's a total misconception that Brits all have bad teeth - we seriously have no idea where that thing comes from
Was this filmed at an ATP festival (in Minehead)?
love those 2
when was this recorded?
They could be chefs. Fucking love that
I'm gonna blog maybe 2 years from now when the internet's over! Great!
HOLY SHIT! Im a musician, remind me to never talk again and think ill be interesting.... jesus christ how many times can i watch and a band or actor talk about nonsense before i remember its seldom interesting and often earbeating.
not quite solo but her newest band is with guitarist Bill Nace and is called Body/Head, kind of an ambient noise project, check it out.
This guy reminds me of the boss out of the incredibles
What's up with all the anti-Sonic Youth comments getting thumbs up?
Sonic Youth was objectively an incredibly innovative and influential band.
Maybe because they seem like morons, from interviews ecc. Watch the nardwuar one.
Ian is hilarious. Great frontman too.
God bless sweet Ian.
Kim: You can’t download a meal… Someone heard that and invented Doordash.
Hahaha!! I love it!
Cheffing is like heavy metal ... brilliant
I feel really bad for that group of kids. The British were always early pioneers of torture techniques.
he's awesome
sonic youth is hot. kim and thurston are hot. nothing else like them. ever.
I feel the same way about the pixies breaking up that thurston does. I also wish his band didn’t break up
i hope thurston is aware that december 2016 was the first month since cd's came out that record sales in the united kingdom outsold digital media
If I'm not mistaken the host to this is Ian Svenonius from the band the Make-Up. lol thats awesome. : P
....and Nation of Ulysses....
when was the interview recorded?
2010!
This is the most pretty thing i ever seen, infinity love

I got stuck in the same place, but just changed the video quality a few times and it just started playing the rest! Hope it works for you guys too.
Ian was a part of some great and awesome bands but god damn is he fucking funny when he interviews cool bands.
No. Just awesome.

Ian Svenonius, formerly the singer of punk band Nation of Ulysses.
hahah when kim leaves, he's like goshh don't let me do this alone :p
yeah it works that way. thanks
So if this was filmed in 2012, are Kim and Thurston divorced while this is being filmed? I’m so confused
Evan Drane No they got divorced in April of 2013
Naw, but the relationship was pretty much fucked at this point. Therapy sessions won't help if you dont choose to stop cheating.
This interview was filmed in 2010.
I don’t know who this dude is but he’s fuckin hysterical!!!
8:35 Thanks, Thurston.
