However, there are many who will not spend 15 minutes on one of these vids. I'm one of those who will watch Kelly Galloup take 35 minutes to tie a fly because he always explains the why and how. Absolutely beautiful tie! I'm pretty sure the lumpy/bumpy ties you often see in tenkara flies are not on purpose. I think a more likely reason is that the fish don't care whether the fly has a perfectly smooth taper, so why should the fly tyer? Dr. Ishigaki, one of the leading names in tenkara, boasts that he can tie a tenkara fly in 60 seconds (which indeed he can). You can't do a tapered body with precise touching turns in 60 seconds. Similarly, tenkara flies are not imitations of specific insects. In the rough and tumble mountain streams of Japan, the fish don't have time to inspect a fly. A rough impression of life is all that is important.
Hi Karsten - can you please advise on an alternative to the Danville Size A monocord you used in this video? I'm struggling to find it, and would like to find something with similar flattening & cording abilities. Thanks for the great videos you've got here - love them.
Thanks Tim, the Danville’s sz A monochord might be hard to get. Ideally you want a multi strand thread that will allow you to flatten it. Although they have different qualities the Danville flat waxed 210 denier would be a good thread as would UTC 210. You could go even thicker say 280 denier as it’s all about getting maximum coverage and build up with minimal turns. Just remember the trade off is that it gets harder to control the look of the fly because of these very qualities. Like trying to keep the head small or the body slim. I hope that helps... K

I'd maybe try tenkara one day but for the moment I will have to stay with what I have. I operate on a shoestring. But I love the flies and really enjoy tying them They work anywhere really. :-)
