Enough time has passed, Under Night In Birth II has now been patched. Can we now all admit that Under Night In Birth II is the new greatest fighting game in the world for all eternity, that anyone who disagrees with me is wrong, and we need to spread the word worldwide like it's the newest wave of Kagura Bachi fever? So strap in, get your VPNs, and gogogo, boys, tell the whole world this: Lobotomy Kaisen is dead, & LOBOTOMY IN-BIRTH HAS BEEN BORN!!!!!!!

I found Natsu's video a few days ago and was glad to see someone speaking to the state of this game. He made a really good point that it's a little shocking that a game that's a mainstage event at both EVOs has such anemic player counts.
You hit the nail on the head at 05:58 . Under Night is in desperate need for content at the moment, especially guides. I took an extended break from the series a few years ago and I'm coming back in a strange place, where I know how the game works in general, but have forgotten all my habits and muscle memory. I'm kind of reliving the new player experience; and it's ROUGH out here. The Mizuumi articles only have frame data and combos while the starter guides are almost all empty. UA-cam guides for many of these characters are either from early Uniclr or late Unist. I wanted to pick up Tsurugi, and as far as I'm aware, you have the only comprehensive guide for that character in text or video. I've been fighting the same guy for the past 3 days online and he has thousands of hours in other fighting games, and 80 hours in UNI 2, but is largely unaware of some of this game's central mechanics. It's not like he's a scrub or anything, Uni is just really difficult to find learning resources for. Once I'm back up to speed on the game, I'd like to make some guides explaining the core mechanics of the game in plain english. I made a Granblue guide a while back ago that got some pretty good response, especially as a channel that never posts anything lol. People are interested in this game, but they're getting destroyed online and when they go looking for help, there's not much there to teach them. You unironically need a Uni tutor/coach if you want to level up from low level to intentional play.
I'm a little mixed on the importance of funny/casual content. Uni, at its heart, is a fighting gamer's fighting game. After 10 years of development and refinement, the game doesn't have very many weird interactions or jank that can be exploited for content. Alot of humorous FGC content is usually based on skill gapping players with silly strategies, but the people who sign into Uni on the regular are all certified killers, so that might be tough. But, I do think the more players we can get educated and playing intentionally, the more people who would be able to produce that kind of content.

Glad I ran into this video. I have been debating on getting this game and playing it and making content. The only thing that kept me away was people saying how it was a discord fighter and that it would be impossible to find fights online. I play all fighters, so ones that take time to learn dont bother me, but not finding fights and only having to find them through discord was a huge reason i havent pulled the trigger. But i think ill just give it a try.

I'm someone who is new to UNI2 and really, REALLY wanted to learn and play it after spending thousands of hours with BBTAG. It's extremely unfortunate that THIS is how French Bread decided to create their sequel, their last game in the series. Like you said, they should have revamped it from the ground up and that's just not what we got. Instead, for me personally, everything involving UNI2 is worse in comparison to UNICLR. I have sunk in a dozen or so hours into that version...but's its enough to recognize UNI2's flaws. The horrific art work, the missing music tracks, the opening that's missing a hype song, the terrible UI, the character portraits not being in the opening, IP being essentially useless because everything is either unlocked or we have already seen the same artwork prior. Hell, even some of the moves to the characters I main are kind of just like "Did Hyde really need another spacing tool? He has like four or five other ones that do a better job." Also, giving Hyde and Linne specifically multiple different endings feels like such a copout to me. Linne had forced Hyde to promise to kill her after Keon was taken down and the fact that was never followed through to the end is really upsetting to me. I thought Under Night was more daring than this. I wanted to see Hyde come to terms with killing Linne...but I guess not. This is just one of the endings, or multiple endings in Hyde's case, that I take issue with
But for me personally. What killed my enjoyment of the game are two or three things. 1.) The lack of new, casual players to fight so I can properly learn the game 2.) The lack of new and interesting character interactions during arcade mode instead of the same characters talking to each other AGAIN, and 3.) a single player mode or modes that are not just me going into arcade or training mode for the upteenth time. I'm not saying UNI2 should do something to the scale of Brawl's subspace emissary, but I would have liked to have some sort of a story more where we saw more of the characters develop and interact with each other. Street fighter didn't start off with a story mode either I believe. Those connections and friendships took YEARS to develop, so I feel UNI2 incorporating something like this, especially if this will be the last game in the series, would have been extremely nice to see. Especially since the majority of the characters like to stay in their friend circle and that is something I wanted UNI2 to push away from.
The last thing I will say is I bought the PS5 version of the game...oops. Honestly, I'm not really sorry about it because I don't particularly enjoy playing fighting games on my laptop. If I play video games, I want to see them on my big ass tv in full view, not an eighteen inch wide screen that I am afraid to knock over and break. I'm not saying it's wrong for people to flock to PC gaming, especially if the UNI community is more active on steam...but if that's the case. French Bread really needed to warn players about this somehow since cross console play is not a thing...or just put the game only one PC. I still maybe want to learn the game one day...but I'm not spending another $50 on a game I have already bought. Times are tough unfortunately and I just don't have that kind of money. I did my part and bought the PS5 version and ATTEMPTED to play. I am not going to speak much about the UNI discord. I had multiple problems with finding the right people to fight who are also new and have the PS5 version, so in the end. It didn't work for me...

Thing is the PC port was such a tragedy. I'm a GBFVS guy but i was playing UNI a lot before then. When both games had their sequels coming out people were asking which to play. GBFVSR has so much more going on even if people complain about the balance and 66L and above all the free version to try our the game. UNI2 however almost always won out in the eyes of players who were looking to play either. If the PC launch wasn't so bad, if the content cycle wasn't so slow and if the game had more single player content and for better or worse a carrot on a stick to chase regardless of skill level, UNI2 would have blown up way more imo. Sure timing wasn't great but the actual release outside of that was tragic. New FG guys wanted to play this but the door wasn't nice to open.

I'm a pretty new player in UNI and just wanna say that for me, the characters and the visuals are what keeps me coming back. Because of the small playerbase online, especially in those lower ranks, it gets demoralizing getting stomped multiple games in a row by the same 2 players. The replay system is super helpful, at least for the times I remember to save a replay. (Frame data in the replays would be helpful) Something that I feel would be helpful for newer players is more basic "bite sized" character guides.

  • @warp1die

The only thing that will save this game is a timely discount on Steam with mass advertising from all interested parties. Also, various video guides in an understandable language to make it easier to join the game, otherwise it is a lost cause to increase the number of players in the game. Not everyone was able to take advantage of the previous discount or find out about it in a timely manner.
The discount should be decent, since the current price, with all the love for UNI, is not worth it. Competitors win in terms of player friendliness. If you choose GG Strive or Uni. The choice will fall on Strive. I speak from personal experience. I was kind of shocked when I went to play at the ABBA release. How friendly and pleasant everything was there against the backdrop of UNI. It's like why buy a cactus to eat it? If you can buy a delicious pie.
I myself still play Uni, but I eat this cactus consciously.
Because the game's release ruined everything, alienating all potential players. And as they say, you cannot step into the same river twice. Otherwise, you can repeat the fate of the Dnf duel that you tried with your 50 percent discount on the game and the next season pass will be reborn as a Phoenix, but they write there in the comments to the last game character. It's been a glorious road, goodbye.
Therefore, the community will need to prepare for the arrival of a discount on Uni to turn the situation around. Otherwise we will see the slow death throes of a dwindling player base.
I apologize in advance. English is not my native language.

I'm a noob in uni2, got to maybe c+ until the long range poke into 4k dmg got boring to me. I'll give you my thoughts and I hope I don't sound too condescending, it's all in good spirit.
-first of all it doesn't sound like it's completely dead for a 10 year old game, why can't this game just be a legacy game that will stand the test of time and promote it to the hardcore players?
-now I wouldn't say I'm a complete noob but people that are actually new to fighting games or only play them to have fun won't find much here if I cannot either, there's no content and the playerbase is not big enough to always have a button masher you can go up against, this is also annyoing as even if you can measure up to better players you can't switch from your main and have fun.
also, for a casual, what does uni really do different from other games, wouldn't they have more fun with pretty graphics and characters they know?
-if I understand you right, you ask to create content that is not just educational? I feel that's a pretty tall order for fighting games in general, even the big ones dont have much of that.
-you say dbfz is big despite the IP but I think that's flat out wrong, DB fans are very passionate and many even play the game despite it being a fighter and a tag one on top of that, hell xenoverse2 got more players than fighterz, fans just love the characters to death which is not comparable to any other fighting game imo.
-tekken and sf got popular because at the time it was a multiplayer arcade hit and they made a name for themselves, you cant compare it to the games today because there's many more multiplayer options, that's why fighting games in general are lacking numbers compared to other games, pretty much every gamer knows sf, tekken and mk but whens the last time a legacy fg got into the mainstream consciousness?
I see you love the game but how can you promote it if new players are gonna have a bad time?

i love the feedback and the fact you shared your opinion/Questions regarding this topic. My general problems with under night and why i make videos on this game is because if you're new to under night in birth. it's extremely hard for you to get your foot in the door, learning characters, finding players and getting long sets. the game is not dead but to a newcomer it might as well be, in term of the content. there needs to be some activity that show people that the game is active (any form of content is fine), to encourage players to try it out. nobody will know or even understand the beauty of UNI if no one pushing the game forward. i made an example of the dbfz community because there were times when bandai namco was not supporting dbfz at all!!! and the community stepped up to get the updates/patches that made the game live longer than what it should have. basically, if it wasn't for high level players, content creators and fans dbfz would have died in season 2. i agree with you on SF, but tekken didn't really blow up until 7 because content creators were teaching people how to play the game, and of course there are more multiplayer games on the market now compared to back then. doesn't mean that you shouldn't support the game you have the most fun with. To answer your last question, giving new players a space to where they can find information to learn the game overall is why i made my channel. so, players can apply that information and see growth within their own pace (which can be fun for some, not all). when players see recent guides on the game hopefully it will encourage some to try out UNI. Sorry i know i didn't answer most of your questions (a lot to type) but i appreciate you even commenting so, much love my friend.

I wanna take this game seriously and compete, so I'm one of those rare new players that isn't necessarily a casual. My online experience so far has just been getting bodied by high A and S rank players I assume at least put a lot of time into the last version. I dabbled in Clr to get my toes wet before 2 dropped but most of my experience is in GG games. I stuck with the game past the ruinous launch because my local scene was hype for it and I genuinely enjoy the mechanics, there's a couple characters that gel with my playstyle, and it feels more like older FGs than most of the other modern fare.
I want this game to succeed, but the scene is pretty insular and the awful pc launch kept anyone with tangential interest who hadn't had the hooks sunk into them yet far away. There's just no one except legacy players online, and that's fine for the Discord Fighter specials like BlazBlue (personal fave) but not for a new version/sequel only a few months out. Maybe the US EVO tourney will bring more new people in, the game looks great and this version is even more aggressive like everyone seems to want these days. The stars just have to align.

We’re living in a time period of the start of SF6 and Tekken 8. Meaning its mainly gonna be anime fighter old heads that are gonna play this game and theyre going to be divided by GG Strive, DBFZ, Gran Blue, this and any other game that i dont know about that’s still being played. I know some people still play Accent Core. Theres only so many ways you can divide the sUb genre of fighters. The FGC in general is only so big, especially the anime fighter scene

I don't like the type lumina comparison. They strive'd the fuck out of that game. I'd drop UNI in a heartbeat, faster than a heartbeat, if they did that to it for the sake of attracting casuals. Sure you gain players for < a month, but in the end you're left with your 50 concurrent users and a game that most of the core fanbase doesn't like. Miss me with that dumb shit. Sometimes the core components of your fighting game just don't appeal to people who don't want to play fighting games. I don't know why we want their participation so much when that shit inevitably lasts a week or two. Also also FighterZ was hard carried by its IP, advertising, and visual presentation. Take the IP away and the game would experienced a drastic dropoff within a year.
