OMG! This doesn't have anything to do with shit, but Whitey is the first video game UA-camr i followed, its been some time since i saw a video from him and about a week or i asked myself "wtf happened to whitey?" Boy am i stoked i came across thos video 😆
There's a reason why the system after the bump combat was called the Napishtim Engine. given Ark of Napishtim was the first game using that engine and not The Oath in Felghana. which reminds me i still need to go back and finish up The Ark of Napishtim
I didnt know the Ys games were so short! Might be able to work a few of em into my 2024 games, i know i have Chronicles 1 & 2, Origins, and Oath in Felghana on steam.
The Ys games after Memories of Celceta were disappointments IMO. Ys 8 would have been cool had it not been for the constant return to hub for "muso battles," shoehorned toilet humor involving that disgusting sailor I wished would die, and over-reliance in using a bunch of dumb sidecharacters. Ys9 was awful because of the "muso" crap, the bastardization of European folklore, and glorification of national cuckoldry. There is also way less mystique in the Ys setting with all the "not-Roman Empire" everywhere. I wish they would retcon much of the series and focus on adventures of Adol and maybe one assistant instead of party-oriented action that is best reserved for other games. On a side note, I loved Ys: Origins and thought Memories of Celceta was suprisingly good.
@DerekCivilDefense I think you're misunderstanding what a musou game is here. Nothing in Ys 8 or Ys 9 even remotely resembles that genre of games. And saying that Ys 9 bastardizes European folklore is wild to me. Pretty much every Ys game uses real world locations and myths as motifs for monsters and settings, but these inspirations from the real world are never the main focus of the games. In fact, pretty much every single fictional story is in some ways derivative of real world historical events or other works of fiction. I think holding folklore or history so high up on a pedestal that you feel the need to gatekeep people using it as an aesthetic theme or for worldbuilding is a little silly. I didn't enjoy Ys Origin, but I wouldn't say it bastardized Christian folklore by taking place in a Tower of Babel equivalent - it was just a motif they used as a framework for the setting. Hate Ys 9 if you want, but don't belittle it based on the fact that you hold these old stories sacred I would love to hear what exactly you mean by the "glorification of national cuckholdry" as well. I think if these words are in your head after playing the game, then you probably need to chill out
@@infinitewaffles9396 I cant speak for derek and I dont know exactly what he means, but I know I really hated the fact that the people in the city, who where living under the rule of invaders pretty much, seemed more critical of the locals resisting the invaders then the invaders themselves. People who wanted their home back and wanted to be free where portrayed as unreasonable extremists while the invaders where portrayed as reasonable people. there was also that horrible plotline of our catgirl who went from robin hood to victem blaiming poor people for being poor (when they live in a place with bad water and other horrible conditions in part caused by her fathers buisness with said invaders and in part due to the invaders not providing proper living conditions) and opening a flower shop at the dead end of a super poor district (which means rich people will never go shop there) rather then opening a store that would actualy benefit the people there (food, fresh water, medicine) or hiring people from the district to run the shop so they can earn income for themselves easier instead of running the shop herself when she already has more then enough wealth around her etc. It all felt written by a self important elitist individual who never experienced poverty nor surpression of any kind and wants to feel good/guilt free about their place of privledge. I really enjoyed the game otherwise. But the story elements around the poor and the invaders (who where only treated as invaders by people who the plot treated as misguided bad guys) left a really bad taste in my mouth. I have experience with poverty. I know a lot of people living in poverty. The majority of them DO NOT have themselves to blame. Thats a rich mans myth. Thankfully I do not have experience with being part of a surpressed/invaded nation/country. But I can imagine if you where, YS 9 would be a very triggering story for you at points. Again, dont know if this is the stuff Derek was referring to or not so he may have had other issues. (I will say I rarely find plots/stories in jrpg's worthy of writing home about so I usualy just roll my eyes at the annoying plot points and story beats and character tropes and move on. But Ys 9 really pushed it at times where I almost rage quit because of bad personal experiences with poverty and the mistreatment/discrimination you face because of it. Due to this Ys 9 is by far and large dead last in my Ys rankings when it comes to enjoyment.

Hell yeah lol. I'm still here. Just making some videos still on the side! Life's been a crazy trip but UA-cam it always a fun outlet.

Love the strong opinions here! Love seeing how everyone different. But I do agree origins is the bomb.
