Introducing Captive Bred Baby Mandarin Dragonet and Feeding Challenges | Blue Reef Tank

- In this video, I am going to reveal one of my dream fish - A Captive Bred Mandarin Dragonet.
Many reefers have had issues keeping this fish because of its strict dietary requirements, especially the wild-caught ones. I chose to go for a captive-bred mandarin, hoping that it would be easier to keep. I was not wrong. Although I struggled to feed him frozen food in the beginning, he started to accept frozen brine shrimp around week 3. I am so glad that it worked out well.

Amazing! You sure did your research👍🏻 your tank is fully stocked with so many specimens but when I’m watching your vids, looks so spacious and roomy for a 16 gallon tank! Looking forward of seeing what awesome specimens go into your waterbox 20!
Thanks Paul! I would hate to lose him as I paid a lot of money for this little guy 😅
Just got my baby mandarin today! Looks just like your guy in terms of color and size as well. I have a biocube 32 with a lot of pods but in a few months I plan on installing a refugium in the back for the pods to breed. Thanks for the video looking forward to seeing more!
That is a really good idea! They deplete the pods pretty fast. My plan is to replenish the pods once or twice a month. That way, he'll stay fat and healthy
Beautiful little baby hope all goes well
Thank you! 🙂
great video man, thats a awesome fish. ITS SO BEAUTIFUL! i subbed and hope to see more of your videos man. i just started a channel myself
Thanks man! 🙂 I have been wanting this fish for a long time. It's definitely one of the nicest looking marine fish out there!
Congrats man - Good luck and all the best with your channel 👍
I love this fish 😍.
This is my dream fish 😍
Biota feeds these PE Calanus, Baby Brine, TDO Chroma Boost Pellets Size B2 and PE Hatchery Pellets. I isolated my pair in a breeder box and had no issues feeding them these foods. Hope this helps :)
Thanks mate! I will definitely try this method if I had no success feeding him pellets / prepared foods in the tank 😁
Cooler than ⭐!♡
Such a cute baby Mandarin!! Cute tank as well. What’s the brand name of that drip acclimator?
Thank you! - It's Innovative Marine Accu Drip. Hope that helps 😁
ORA? I have had mine for about two weeks now. Still very tiny, but looks great every time I spot him.
I got mine from my LFS and I heard that they got it from University (not sure which Uni) that's doing a breeding program on Mandarin fish 😁 Good luck with yours! I love mine!
I'm interested to see where you got your captive bred mandarin from, I have seen some listed as captive bred on liveaquaria but they are 3-4 times the price of not certified ones and I have always loved the fish and decided that one of the mandarin gobies was going to be my end goal fish once my tank is better established
I got mine from my LFS here in Australia 🙂 They are definitely more expensive than the wild caught ones but not like 3-4 times more.
They are hands down one of the most beautiful fish in the saltwater hobby! The challenge is to keep them alive 😅 You just have to make sure that they eat frozen foods in the LFS before bringing them back home.
2:37 the poor mandarin hit the bucket soo hard.😬
Never seen one this small!
Yeah, she's tiny!
Firstbite, do a great line in concentrated pods, this worked for me
Thanks for the suggestion. I managed to feed him frozen brine shrimp. Now I just need to train him to accept prepared foods 🙂
I have a glass jar in a corner of the tank mine will go in and eat pellets keeps them in one spot and the flow dosent blow them about.
Took a few weeks but I got mine eating bloodworm first then slowly mixed in pellets good luck with it l.
My absolute favourite fish :)
Thanks for the advice mate 🙂 I will try that and hopefully he'll start eating the pellets. They are one of the most beautiful saltwater fish, hands down!
Absolutely agree and the way those fins never stop and they just hover about. Epic fish
They are like a mini helicopter 😄 Love them to bits
Cute little fish I have a pair in my tank, if it’s eating frozen it will probably weave onto pellets in the future at least one of mine have, try some lobster eggs too I try to switch up there diet making sure they have the right nutrition!
Yeah! I love them so much! I am currently switching between frozen brine, frozen copepods, and lobster eggs. So far, only the brine draw his attention 😅 I make sure to soak mine in vitamins prior to feeding. I will definitely train him to eat pellets. Do you have any tips on this?
Blue Reef Tank probably not the best advice but when I feed my mandarin I feed him every other day with brine and the other days I just throw some pellets in for the other fish and I guess he was just picking at them, it’s not amazing advice but definitely smaller pellets
I will definitely try this! I just need to find a way to get the pellets to him 😅
Congrats, I rescued my baby spotted mandarin from a store about 5 months ago. Basically got her for free. She wasn't eating their food. So I buy her copepods and empty a pack into the tank and a couple into the sump, for breeding. That way she can eat as much as she wants.
I'd like to say yours is female too, i may be wrong as yours is a baby, but I don't see the long dorsel fin.
Like and a sub, so I can watch yours grow. I'd like to get one just like yours in the hopes of babies haha.
Thats awesome! How's she doing now? 🤩
I think you're right. I reckon mine is a female.
Thanks for the like and sub 😊
@@BlueReefTank yeah she's loving life, always on the hunt. She has started munching on brine shrimp, which is great, but I'll always supply copepods.
It took me ages to find a baby mandarin, so I'll keep an eye for another, hopefully a boy.
She is probably my favourite fish in the tank. So much character.
That's awesome! 🤩 Did you try to culture your own copepods?
Yeah! They are hard to find isn't it. Mostly are wild caught and got a pinched belly 😔 I was lucky enough to get one that is captive bred. I believed peanut also eats all my flatworm which is a bonus 😅
@@BlueReefTank yes I do, within the sump. They certainly do breed and can grow quite big. Very handy for food and filtering/cleaning the sump. But like I said I do top them up to keep the numbers healthy. Also occasionally I do see them travel into the main tank, before they become fast food.
Surprisingly my mandarin eats mysis shrimp so he’s doing pretty well
That's awesome Mavis! 👍 Is yours also captive bred or wild caught ones?
may I know whats the name of hose that you use for dripping?
Any particular frozen brine shrimp you used? I got my guy today and he's been eating up copepods all day. Want to try to introduce something else
Try and get it on small mysis ,much more nutrition. Mine loves hikari marine s pellets and is very fat though the tank had been set up for 16 years and is crawling with life.
I'm still working on it 😅 I hope I can get it to eat pellets like yours
I'm going to start looking for one only, I just can't say no to those goofy puppy...ehhh...baby fish eyes.
Hi, ppl say u almost have to have a sump for them so pods can multiple and thrive. But I don't understand does the pods make their way to the main tank or do u have to take some out and add to the tank so the fish can feed. Or do they just find their own way into the main tank and if they do don't they get trapped in the filtration?
Hi Tony - The sump is essentially used as a safe place for the pods to breed since the mandarin can't reach there. The pods then make their own way into the main tank through the return pump. Usually people setup their sump so that all the mechanical filtration (filter floss, socks etc) comes first before the "pods breeding station". If the pods from the display tank get sucked into the filtration, in that case then it might get trapped 🙂 I hope this makes sense
@@BlueReefTank now I got it, also the explanation of the mechanical filtration being set before the pods section is realy nice and clear 👍👍.
@@tonymontana539 Glad that I can help 😄
I'm in Australia too.. where can I get a captive-bred mandarin?
It is hard to find these days especially in Australia. I got mine from my LFS and they were gone within a week or two and I haven't seen new one comes in since. You can probably ask your LFS if they can get it for you? I'm sure they will know someone who breed mandarins. Sorry I can't help! 🙂
hey, I just got one he is so tiny, I was wondering did any of your other fish pick on him or anything?
That's awesome! My other fish don't bother my mando at all. They might "shoo" him once in a while when it gets too close to their territory but apart from that they all get along really well 😁 Just make sure to keep yours well fed
@@BlueReefTank my tank is fully stocked with all different types of pods gonna try to get him eating frozen. I'm mainly just worried about my blenny going after him because if he wanted to he could fit the little guy in his mouth.... he's just so tiny I'm scared for him
@@Spook-yea I would put him in some sort of breeder box for a day or two and see how the other fish would react? While he's in there, you can also train him to eat frozen.
@@BlueReefTank yeah when I first put him in the female clown gave him a nip and the blenny did too but only once and they didn't bother him again, but was still scared for him so I made him a little home with a Tupperware and a rock in side and I put pods in there and I see him eating so probably gonna leave him in there for a few day, and I put some food in there too but I don't think he's gone for it yet, the blenny keeps looking inside but I think that's only because there some food in there
@@Spook-yea My clowns did the same thing initially, but as long as they don't do it constantly I wouldn't worry too much. Eventually the mandarin will learn his "place" in the tank and the clowns will leave him alone. I also wouldn't worry about the blenny, they are normally a peaceful fish. He's probably just defending his territory and showing who's boss in the area haha
Mandarins are normally pretty good at staying out of trouble. :D Goodluck with your Mandarin and keep me updated!
Just watched your new video, did this one end up perishing? What happened? :(
yeah she did. I had a velvet outbreak in my tank and lost half of my fish unfortunately :(
No womder mandarin dragonet is tought to keep cause of their colour.I think?
Probably? 😅
Hello, where did you buy it? Is it doing okay? Thanks
I bought her from my LFS 🙂 She's doing really well at the moment. I would say she's very fat
Have you tried fish eggs?
I've tried lobster eggs. So far the one that she likes the most is the brine shrimp 😅
no quarantine
Not enough space for a quarantine tank at the moment 😅 but I might set one up in the future when I move to a bigger place
@@BlueReefTank i've been thinking it's probably hard to put a mandarin thru qt since you need established tank. would buying copepods solve that issue?
but then can't use copper on em can you since the pods will die?
i suppose it's best to get make sure it doesn't die but buy copepods and keep it in qt to observe and make sure it doesn't have ich or velvet that's what i'm planning on doing when the time comes
how would you put it thru qt?
@@MrDon967 I heard from people in the facebook group saying that you don't really need to qt mandarin because they have this very thick coating on them that no only deter them from predator but also prevent them from getting diseases or parasites. One way I would do is to pay the LFS a few extra bucks for them to hold it in their qt tank for 14 days or so. My LFS actually qt all their fish hence why I just dumped them straight in haha 😅
@@BlueReefTank appreciate the tip my LFS does hold freshwater fish after purchase i guess it doesn't hurt to ask if they do the same for saltwater regardless my setup is probably 4-6 months away from being able to house mandarines and i'm already planning on upgrading so i guess more longer then 6 months away.
how long before my algae scrubber will produce copepods any idea?
Yeah, I would definitely ask your LFS to quarantine it for you.
6 months should be plenty of time for the pods to grow. They reproduce fairly quick. I would also start a copepods and phytoplankton culture on the side so you don't need to keep topping it up 😁 I am doing it myself at the moment
I have a bunch of them as long as you have pods in the tank they're happy and they also eat bloodworms
No qt?
She has been qt by my LFS for 14 days
Bloody hell mate could you have dropped him from a greater hight!
