I saw this ship in Kaoishung(Taiwan)in 1988.I took a ship to scrap. She was laying there with no signs of her being broken up.I asked the ships agent about her.He replied 'this is new ship for ferry crossings South China sea'.I was speechless, they obviously had no idea of what she'd been involved in.
She never sailed again, she almost sank on the voyage to Taiwan and she was scrapped in late 1988.
Yeah your right;apologies
She wasn't scrapped, she was refurbished and sold to a ferry company in the Phillipines
Josh McPhee: From Wikipedia ~ The vessel was salvaged and put up for sale, and on September 30, 1987, was sold to Naviera SA Kingstown, and was renamed Flushing Range. Then on March 22, 1988, she was taken to Taiwan to be broken up.
@@joshmcphee1412 what was her name when you saw her. She was not called the herald of free enterprise for her journey to Taiwan. Also if what you say is true in sure you can give me her current name avd company she works for.
My old man used to drive aboard for a trucking firm called Cavewood.. He told me the oldest and the youngest Cavewood drivers died in this disaster.. Complete and utter tragedy. Condolences to anyone who suffered a loss and bereavement..
Ive actually been on this ferry in the 80s couldve been myself and my family awful doesnt bear thinking about
Thank goodness that this old newsreel was saved from destruction as this is very important to future historians etc?. I remember it very well as i was only 13 years old at the time, way back in 1987.
I've used this video in referencing a case study I'm writing on the incident. I'm so glad it was saved from a skip! History thanks you
RIP to all those tragically lost and those left grieving.
I will always remember the date of this disaster in 1987 as it occurred on March 6th,the same date as my late mother's birthday.RIP to all the victims
I sailed on this ferry a month or so before this happened on the way back from my holiday in Holland. Not many ferries are named but I remembered the Heralds name. So sorry for the ones lost and not as fortunate as me.
It’s interesting to hear them postulate about why the bow doors are open. You wouldn’t expect the boat to just leave harbor without bothering to close them.
Been on this ferry several times as I used to live in Dover
Watched in horror from Canada after my Dad called me to let me know
Went to Dover two weeks later, it felt awful there
Yeah, went on it a few times myself
Me too, I remember it well because I'd just started work, terrible tragedy the poor folk, R. I.P 🇬🇧
30 years ago tonight. RIP all xx
My grandmother lost her cousin from this, Bettina Picinco, 49, of Cleveland. Passenger.
I remember watching the Breakfast news report on the Saturday morning as a 7yo. Having become fascinated with Titanic the year before (likely as a result of the expeditions down to the wreck) I took an avid interest in anything to do with ships and the sea.
I followed the salvage operation and then the inquiry the following year, and someone gave me a copy of the Readers Digest that had the full story including survivor accounts, which really brought home the human dimension and the terror the passengers must have felt being trapped in a sinking ship.
As others have said, the late 1980s seemed to be one disaster after another, often with horrific loss of life, and looking back now, the Herald was very much a metaphor for the 80s / Thatcherite tendency to cut corners in order to make a profit. 'Disease of sloppiness' indeed, and in some ways, we haven't learned a thing (see: Grenfell Tower).
RIP to all those lost that freezing night 33 years ago. I lost someone precious to me in very different circumstances, and I know that whilst the relentless passage of time makes it less immediate, it never really 'heals' those scars.
How you got from a ferry captains mistake to blaming Thatcher is a most odd thought process. People still do it today weirdly.
Remember sailing on the sister ship , harwich to zeebrugge route ! Before the disaster ! I was only about 10 at the time and never understood why the ship sailed with bow doors open ! The boat would leave dock and sail into the sea with now doors wide open ! Why ?
Herald of Free Enterprise, Piper Alpha Explosion, Lockerbie, Hillsborough, King's Cross Fire, Clapham Junction Collision, Kegworth Plane Crash, Marchioness Disaster.....
ALL within 3 years 1987-1989
Plus the late 1987 hurricane.
My mum and dad almost boarded this boat my dad in the army was called back to base and by luck missed the boat
32 years ago today in 2019, RIP the 193.
My brother in law was aboard and survived after some hours in the water. He was a crew member in the bar and food service area. It was a very difficult time and this report is not very accurate to say the least. RIP to those who were lost.
David: I'm glad your brother in law survived. You're of course correct that the report contains many inaccuracies but given that this was made while the rescue was ongoing and no investigation had even begun yet.
I remember sailing to France on this ship in August 1987... I didn’t like it!! National Anthem at the end of the programme brings back strange memories!!
Brings back memories of television closedown!! What a quaint thing that was. I miss it in a way!! I’m a huge nostalgia addict!!
1986
RIP. First time I've heard of this disaster.
Iconic, a metaphor for Thatcherism and the idiotic bonfire of red tape ideology like Grenfell Tower. Regulations are standards, how high or low do we want our standards to be?
Unbelievably strange how many disasters occurred during the 1980’s. No decade before or since I think has seen as many disasters as this one
What a coincidence, if there were 2 occurrences, three or more is a trend, isn't it?
piper alpha, lockerbie ,british midlands crash, chernobyl, hillsborough, heysel, bradford stadium fire ,san francisco earthquake , london underground fire, clappam junction train crash the list goes on and on !!!
@@stevensmith5816 absolutely. The Marchioness disaster, European gateway, Air India 182. So many.
@@stevensmith5816 i wonder if other decades are actually any different if you list the numbers
The car deck openers ? Hmmmm seemed to happened a few times
never liked boats since this... I remember this terrible disaster every time Im on one- those poor people... RIP
My grandad was ment to go aboard but was luckily late
She was extremely LUCKY
Complete incompetence.....they left the forward doors opened! And these RORO ferries have hardly any keel, totally unstable. An accident waiting to happen. Lucky the ship found a sandbank.
The film shown before this was The Elephant Man.
I remember this tragedy happening, from watching TV. Tragic. Preventable?
Very much so - if the crew had shut the bow doors upon leaving Zeebrugge it would not have happened . Amazingly no one was prosecuted for the loss of life in this tragedy
Stephen Jessel that in 1997 reported the death of Lady D
0:18 most of them rich?
Yeah i heard that too
*british
My grandad was going to work but he was on leave so he didn't he was in the engine room so if he went he would of died rip to all those who died
And got injured
He wouldn’t have, all 80 crew survived
This doesnt bear thinking about my family and i went on this ship to dover to calais on holiday in the 80s you didnt think it would be unsafe it couldve been us we went on ferry after disaster they put a tanoy out saying the bow doors were closed i felt very afraid and frightened to go on a ferry after that all those poor people who died i keep thinking it couldve been us we used it to go to france on holiday those poor people who died just awful
so sad.
Human error stupid error
Been on this ship as a kid, always remember my parents saying look the ship's called enterprise (star trek)😊puked in a bag n fed the fishes..
This is indeed what free enterprise gets you
27th February 1987
No it was 6th March 1987
TT LINES! MS HERALD! WELCOME
thought it was hull to Zeebrugge not Dover
Townsend Thoresen ran two channel routes between Dover and Calais and PO ferries have a route ferries do have a route between Hull-Zeebrugge using the MV PRIDE OF YORK and the PRIDE OF BRUGGES however back in 1987 there was a route linking the ports of Dover-Zebrugge but now only the Hull Zebrugge route remains. Townsend Thoresen was a subsidy of P&O Ferries
STANLEY TOOLS!
At 2.50 the reporter mentions the Dutch authorities. What has it got to do with them?
Anthony Lawless Every little helps
THEY WERE HELPING.
"What has it got to do with them" lol
Anthony Lawless They were trying to send sex dolls to England on a pirate ship and they were caught 😈😈🙅🙆👱👱👱👱
The coastline, silly.
The next country up the coast, all hands on deck, the main source of divers was Plymouth!
Roll on roll off roll over
*ROBLOX DEATH SOUND INTENSIFIES*
Of course the doors were never closed - funny how rumours get picked up by the bbc
remember this is early on, they didn't know the full cause of the disaster at that point.
