On TV: Eleanor Steber - Vissi d'arte (Tosca) - 1949

- Steber was a household name during this era. Here she begins the show's 22nd consecutive year on the air with a full-blooded, soaring rendition of the famous prayer from act II of Tosca.
.....................................
This channel is primarily about vocal emission-aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione-chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it-with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione-the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.
Caveat: I'm biased in favor of baritones and baritone literature, but if you want to learn about and listen to all the greatest singers in the old-school tradition, explore this spreadsheet (voice parts are separated by tabs): bit.ly/2W4qmE3
What a gem of a recording
She was a real force....one of the best of her generation
I love Steber so much!
She was such an accomplished artist, a radiant soprano with a huge repertoire. She could actually have tackled the whole light to lyric soprano repertoire (including baroque music), not forgetting mélodies, popular songs and operetta! She kept her splendid voice late in her life, accompanying herself on the piano! I actually (and incidentally) met her when I was younger in NYC in a department store where she was ... buying a hat! Love her. RIP.
I’ve never heard a B flat like that. Wow, I’m sorry I’m just learning about this fantastic artist just now
Pimp The Human oops..thanks
It’s a B flat. And many other sopranos sing it as well, or better.
@@liedersanger1 ok and?
I met her once. Very friendly, approachable person, she autographed for me my copy of Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915, which she originally commissioned.
Sublime! Una voce stupenda. Grandissima artista.
I was lucky enough to have met her in Santa fe opera in 1972. That I believe was her last opera performance. She was a wonderful performer even then. Even though she had to have her staging so that she could take a hit of oxygen as she moved to either side of the stage. The audience never knew.
Why?
She suffered from asthma which was quite severe at times so that would explain the oxygen. So glad that you got to see this wonderful singer in opera.
Makes me proud to be a native son of West Virginia.
brava steber!!
This wonderful singer was such a outstanding singer with a beautiful voice. She ranked up there with the best of them.
A really lovely voice.
Molto brava !!!!piacevole nell'ascolto brava :Tosca!!!!!!!
Exquisite voice ❤
What a singer!
Steber comunque stupenda, come sempre.
only 1,418 views? bravissima and better than crowds of other sopranos!
Fantastica
Wonderful.. Brava.. 👏👏👏👏😊😊😊

THIS!!!!!
THAT is how it’s done $
Thank you very much for sharing, great !🤝👏🌺
Impecable
Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore,
non feci mai male ad anima viva!
Con man furtiva
quante miserie conobbi aiutai.
Sempre con fè sincera
la mia preghiera
ai santi tabernacoli salì.
Sempre con fè sincera
diedi fiori agli altar.
Nell’ora del dolore
perché, perché, Signore,
perché me ne rimuneri così?
ah, perché me ne rimuneri così?
sublime .
divina .
@@Tkimba2
bellissima domanda !
@@andrealupini6769

Brava Steber! Callas who?
I love Steber very much! Callas is in another universe as everybody else when it comes to expression. She sings every note as if it was her first and last time she would ever sing it! Besides Toaca was meant to be sung by a dramatic soprano and Callas had a eay bigger and heavier voice than Steber.
Maria.Callas.
Steber was a great soprano, but she was sure as hel wasl no Callas----------- not by a long shot!
Starting with voice SIZE. Callas’ voice was about 5 times bigger and heavier. Calls had a DEPTH to her tone that very very few other sopranos in history had.
Excuse me, you need to listen to this: ua-cam.com/video/_pEUT6yYH_c/v-deo.html&app=desktop.
You hear that middle voice alone? Steber is a soubrette soprano compare to Callas!
brava steber!!
