I met her once. Very friendly, approachable person, she autographed for me my copy of Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915, which she originally commissioned.
She was such an accomplished artist, a radiant soprano with a huge repertoire. She could actually have tackled the whole light to lyric soprano repertoire (including baroque music), not forgetting mélodies, popular songs and operetta! She kept her splendid voice late in her life, accompanying herself on the piano! I actually (and incidentally) met her when I was younger in NYC in a department store where she was ... buying a hat! Love her. RIP.
Such an AMERICAN voice! Fearless, a bit wild, but big sky, wide open spaces, from the mountains to the praires....its a shame Bing disliked her and misused her. She was one of the truly greats.
Many thrills await you. Greatest singer of Mozart and Strauss American has produced. I recommend her marathon Carniege Hall recital. She sing EVERYTHING. literally, that she was famous for. It's on YT. She will become your favorite singer!
I was lucky enough to have met her in Santa fe opera in 1972. That I believe was her last opera performance. She was a wonderful performer even then. Even though she had to have her staging so that she could take a hit of oxygen as she moved to either side of the stage. The audience never knew.

I love Steber very much! Callas is in another universe as everybody else when it comes to expression. She sings every note as if it was her first and last time she would ever sing it! Besides Toaca was meant to be sung by a dramatic soprano and Callas had a eay bigger and heavier voice than Steber.
Starting with voice SIZE. Callas’ voice was about 5 times bigger and heavier. Calls had a DEPTH to her tone that very very few other sopranos in history had.
Excuse me, you need to listen to this: ua-cam.com/video/_pEUT6yYH_c/v-deo.html&app=desktop. You hear that middle voice alone? Steber is a soubrette soprano compare to Callas!

I’ve never heard a B flat like that. Wow, I’m sorry I’m just learning about this fantastic artist just now
Pimp The Human oops..thanks
It’s a B flat. And many other sopranos sing it as well, or better.

Sublime! Una voce stupenda. Grandissima artista.
I was lucky enough to have met her in Santa fe opera in 1972. That I believe was her last opera performance. She was a wonderful performer even then. Even though she had to have her staging so that she could take a hit of oxygen as she moved to either side of the stage. The audience never knew.
Why?
She suffered from asthma which was quite severe at times so that would explain the oxygen. So glad that you got to see this wonderful singer in opera.
What did she sing?
This wonderful singer was such a outstanding singer with a beautiful voice. She ranked up there with the best of them.
Just wonderful. That decrescendo is heaven!

Beh... adesso... Lasciamo stare la povera Callas, che è stata di un altro pianeta.
Steber comunque stupenda, come sempre.
