- Johann Strauss Sr. was commissioned to compose a celebratory march to commemorate the victory of Austrian Feldmarschall Josef Radetzky von Radetz at the Battle of Custoza, over the forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Apparently, when the march was first played for Radetzky, the soldiers with him spontaneously started clapping along with the chorus.
One of the traditions of the Wiener Philharmoniker is a grand concert on New Year's Eve, stretching past midnight. The program varies from one year to the next, as does the guest conductor, but always consists primarily of pieces by the Strauss family. Music by other Austrian composers such as Mozart, the Haydn brothers, and Schubert may be included, as well as occasional pieces by composers of other nationalities. One constant are the encores. The second is always "The Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss Jr. and the third is the Radetzky March. As seen in the video, it is tradition for the orchestra to start as soon as the conductor starts his way to the podium (recalling the joke about how the role of a conductor is to start up the orchestra, then get out of the way) and instead conduct the audience in their clapping.
Prosit Neuejahr!
