Strikeforce Post Fight: Ronda Rousey - 'If They Don't Tap, You Keep Going'

  • It was another first round win for Ronda Rousey on Saturday night, but not without a battle with Miesha Tate first.
Rousey had to secure two different armbars to finally put Tate away, but the second one ended up dislocating her opponent's arm when she didn't tap out.
It appeared that the arm popped on two different occasions before Tate tapped, but should the referee have stepped in and stopped the fight sooner?
See what Ronda Rousey says about that and much much more after her spectacular win in Strikeforce Saturday night:

Felipe Massa i dont pretend to be any kindof expert but,Jiu JItsu as invented and prfeced as a combat ar not a sport, combat as in the field of batle with swords and spears and shit. It was meant to take down a person in full armor with weapons in hand, alot of the so called martial arts are adaptations for civilian life as a way to protect yourself. Not jiu jitsu-judo, it was intended from the start to do harm to the point of death with the minimal efort on your part(combat remember? Multiple opponents no time to take in the senery? That sort of thing.) if you know what you're doing chanses are your opponent will end injured if not permanently disabled.

its amazing how stupid some of these comments are! if you don't tap then its your problem! people saying ''just hold it don't push it'' are you serious?! how do you win by sub if your opponent wont tap? and to the idiots going on about ''going till someone dies'' you have no idea about the sport or the rules! no tapping is exactly like not having your hands up, then saying ''omg I cant believe she punched her in the face when her hands wasn't up'' way to many idiots about please don't reproduce.

    a) you try to submit someone: get the hold and let go if the ref tells you to (or maybe if the ref is shit you let go after the arm broke or your opponent lost consciousness)
    b) someone tries to submit you: if can't escape tap out before you get injured.

I agree with you it would be extremely difficult.
Skipping the roids-thing for a moment; Cyborg's major strength is striking. Ronda's major strength is on/to the ground/grappling. If cyborg gets a few (brutal) hits in it could be over, but if Ronda gets cyborg to the ground, I believe she has an edge. In fact, I think the *only* way to counter cyborg's striking would be an incredibly solid groundgame and well, Ronda certainly has that.
Would make for one hell of an exciting fight though ! :D

@peaks888 I get what you're saying now.The reason I think it won't hurt women's mma is because their side is still basically in the infancy stage. And the other fighters are gonna be definitely studying the hell out of her game now.So her fights will probably be more difficult, forcing her to use other skills.Sort of like Big Nog's old fights in Pride. And she is an undefeated champion who hasn't been out the 1st round. Then there's her Olympic background/looks/personality that makes her marketable

Compares rules of judo to MMA rules:"those are the rules that I am used to"?!.
Since when do fighters have right to transfer and apply the rules of their individual martial arts in Octagon?I also see great disconnect between fighter in winning submission position, opponent tapping out and judge confirming it as victory.AI get the feeling that many submissions are taken too far until judge rectifies it as win.I see lack in fighters to stop at right time but carrying on more than necessary.

  • @OccamsKatana
    @OccamsKatana 12 років тому

I disagree - it's very easy to change the "rules" so that nobody's arm can be broken anymore.
One you could make it so that if you breaks someones arm, Regardless of circumstance, you can never fight again.
Referee's should be highly trained and hyper vigilant when it comes to arm bars, leg locks and chokes, and stop the fight as soon as someone is pinned down.
There is NO escaping a successfull arm or leglock - it can be held on the threshold of breaking and the ref should just call it quits

King was 30 when she gave Bobby Riggs that huge case of Shut-Up-And-Get-Off-My-Tennis-Court back in 1973. And in case you don't remember, Bobby Riggs was an extremely sexist guy who bragged about how he women were inferior to men with regard to tennis. Needless to say, King proved him wrong where she was concerned; and he lost out on $100K.
Ronda kicks ass in MMA (Yeah! I said it!)! And though she beat Tate in another first round win, Tate made her earn it. Cant wait for 8.18.12 vs Kaufmann

  • @ericchoi4476

First of all, I agree that the ref should have stopped it earlier. I also understand your concern but, in all honesty if you ask anyone who practices BJJ or Judo competitively they'd disagree with you. It's the other person's fault for not tapping. That's just common sense, if you're in a fight you can't give your opponent any mercy. It's just the mentality fighters should have and in the UFC they all do.

@stllwtchngvds: I believe Cristiane's strength is her Muay Thai. That's where she's most comfortable. She doesn't have the precision of someone like Anderson Silva, though. Her chance against Rousey is to land a few hard punches and finish the fight quickly. Rousey most likely doesn't have a great chin. If they get close and clinch, I believe Cyborg doesn't have a chance. Ronda is way too technical and Cyborg won't have the strength advantage that winny gave to her.

@stllwtchngvds: I can't provide any useful info that would change your mind. Well matched fights are unpredictable and that's what makes them interesting.
Having said that, I do believe Miesha is a better grappler than Cyborg and we saw what happened. Watch Carano x Cyborg again and you'll see that Carano had a full mount on Cyborg but didn't know what to do. If Gina can full mount Cyborg so can Ronda, but Ronda is an specialist.

@stllwtchngvds: We all remember Royce winning over a bunch of strikers twice his size in the early UFCs. Today's MMA strikers have great defense to takedowns, but Rousey is on a completely different level of grappling being an olympian and Cyborgs ground game is not that great. I guess we'll have to wait until these two ladies meet in the cage and we all hope Cyborg comes clean this time.
