Donate to your local small shelter or rescue, the ones who usually help the most animals, usually all-volunteer run, with little money. Visit the facility and research where their money is actually going.
I stopped my monthly donation and moved it over to my local animal shelter when I learned how much the CEO makes! I am soo sad that the ASPCA is not doing more to directly help so many desperate animals.

There are some good animal welfare organizations that really do need the funding and do the work, organizations like Soi Dog, No Dog Left Behind and one that I’ve been donating to for a year now, Stray Aid Montenegro. I had the worst experience with the SPCA in Mexico. They were “fundraising” in a little bar and I alerted them to a absolutely starving and sick dog in a village. I showed them 3 photo’s and this lady said “oh, I don’t think it looks THAT bad.” WTF??? I knew in that moment she wasn’t interested in helping animals, only donations. Never give without researching financials.
I think you missed the point of this article, the gist of it is , the ASPCA not the SPCA spends a lot more money on fundraising and administration than they do on animal care. And BTW this article was also about the ASPCA and SPCA in the UNITED STATES, not the rest of the world.
I once made a $50 donation to the ASPCA. They kept sending me fundraising mail and I just thought, "What a waste of $50, all this paper and postage they are sending me asking me to donate more is already $50 worth." Finally I just had enough and emailed them to stop sending me all this spam mail. I put one time donation and they think it's okay to spam my mail box asking for more donations while using the $50 I already donated to do it.
Yep. This is why I don't give monetary donations to organizations. Instead, I give physical donations, like supplies, food, etc. I don't want the organization to waste money on fundraising.
Some of the "charities" also turn around and sell your name/address to other so-called charities who then come begging $$$. I worked for a veterinary supply company and asked several different humane societies and rescue groups about $$ being contributed by ASPCA. They said....doesn't happen, never seen any. Since then I have always donated directly to my local groups, never to the national charities.
I canceled my monthly donation to them a few years ago, when I found out that they don't adopt out Pitbulls. Having a Pitbull of my own I simply could not support an organization that discriminates against any breed of dog!
And if you do NOT trust that the money is being spent wisely, check their web-site and contribute off of there. I have picked up dog/cat food off of clearance racks (broken bags, dented cans) towels & blankets from thrift stores, etc and taken them to the Humane Society or animal rescues.
I agree there’s a local SPCA here and over the last ten years I’ve been volunteering and donating at times. To a local animal shelter I’m affiliated with... I’d rather be hands on volunteering and seeing the outcome of the donations also. Not a dime spent in rural Northern California for local animal rescues. We risk our lifes to advocate and save animal's in one of the most compromised and dangerous communities plagued with organized crime, human trafficking and dog fighting rings. The ASPA does not do any outreach to local groups to access animal cruelty or animal welfare in general.
Yikes! I didn't know it was quite that bad. I just donated to a couple of wildlife rescues to help with injured wildlife from the fires. One was Gold Country Wildlife Rescue and the other Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. I finally broke down with Gold Country when I found out they work with Davis. Both are local. The fires have been terrible. Hope things get better soon.
Thanks for donating to wildlife rescues. Our rescue has helped save owls, raccoons, foxes, and Pelicans. It makes a difference when we all chip in and do what we can.
There are so many people who are out there volunteering their time and money to do good work on their own and with small groups. Donate to them not these large corporations. Give money food or time to those on the street you see doing the work. Get involved personally. I've been on the street feeding and spray/neuter of feral cats. Almost went bankrupt while none of my own family would not help, except for a short time from my mother. They made donations to ASPCA instead.

FINALLY, a story on this scamming! I've volunteered at a few shelters and rescues, the smallest ones do the hardest work, on a shoestring, actually on the ground rescuing, adopting, vetting, etc. Research where the money goes. Tour your local shelter or rescue. If you feel uncomfortable donating money, donate supplies that they NEED, or donate to their veterinarian to help cover animals' medical needs.
I used to donate to ASPCA a few years ago until I noticed most of the money was going to ads and salaries. Hardly any went to help the animals. I also noticed more animals were being put down than helping them with their medical issues. I didn't even receive my tax donations for taxes. This is an eye opening for all the public who donate. This is shameful.
About time they got caught.i found an injured cat was willing to pay for adoption, they told me if the leg was broken and I did not pay for it they would put it down. I was heart broken went back for weeks to see if they found it was a sprain.i will never forget that. Those commercials are well.made ,but they are liars.

Not all. The 501(c) organizations are legal and they do put your money where it belongs on the animals, medical care, feed etc. Check them out. They are really good. They are also tax deductible.

If these rescues had enough fundings, they could hire vet techs or even a veterinarian full-time. They usually show newly rescued animals, where they were rescued from, even their vet bills. If not money, consider donating needed supplies or adopting from them. Most are all-volunteer run, no paid employees.

OK..Quick story. Years ago I did volunteer work for the NYC Animal Shelter, which is a nightmare itself. It was well known that the ASPCA would not take in ANY animal that was not "young" or "cute" to be displayed at their shelter here. They would just send their unwanted to us. Also, they would come by once a week and take any kittens or puppies we had so they could adopt them out. Basically it's all just a huge show for them to back up their BS. They even charge their volunteers money to help out there. I'm glad someone is reporting on this, but I seriously doubt anyone will listen.

i still don't know what the ASPCA actually does. They don't respond when you try to contact them you will just get a voice message with a long winded disclaimer of what they DON'T Handle. They just ask for money 'donations'. If you want to report an animal cruelty case, many towns have an animal control agency/officer, and if they don't, then the case would be handled by a larger city in the area (or at the county level).
This is no better than so called "non-profit Hospitals", the one I used to work at was paying the CEO 4 MILLION A YEAR, and then it trickled down, but yet they still asked for donations and claimed they couldn't fully staff the hospital!!

I have been a long-time supporter of the ASPCA, and this just makes me beyond angry and sick!! The CEO should absolutely be ashamed! Guess I will go local now. I feel so sorry for the animals suffering who could be helped with all that wasted money.
When the ASPCA spends $10,000 per animal, you know something is wrong. Also, the ASPCA only covers the Tri-county area in NYC. You are ALWAYS better off giving to a local SPCA.
That’s the tip of the iceberg… if you know ppl with salary’s in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, they have credit cards linked to expense accounts that the company pays so these ppl go around paying almost everything with a corporate card. They basically get to pocket a huge proportion of their salary because they pay day to day expenses with the company they run $$$.
Maybe the only way to solve this crises is to shut down the ASPCA forever. Before it is shut down forever, divide up the ASPCA stolen money evenly among the SPCA sites.
This makes me so mad! They came to our small, rural town and collected money at our Walmart. We have one humane society for a county of 46,000+ people that has less that 6 people running it. I asked the volunteers collecting money how we could get a donation and they had no idea. I tried to contact anyone in their organization and couldn’t reach anyone. PEOPLE! Donate locally!
That’s the same thing the wounded warrior project does to veterans. I never have gotten financial help from these people, all they care to give you is trips. Why would I want a hunting trip or a shotgun when I’m struggling to pay my bills.
I never understood their methods. Not even their cruel “rare” commercials they air on the holidays. And never understood why they always used a rich celebrity to guilt me into paying a monthly fee. Why aren’t the rich doing so? They have more than me anyways. I never donated and now never will. Have been a proud rescue mom myself and will still continue to adopt them.
I give to my local Humane Society thrift store. Elderly women labor there for minimum wage along with volunteers who work for NO PAY to help the animals. That is where my donations go.
Hopefully they will look into the other areas of their operations. Let's look into their relocation program and how they don't require 14 day quarantine by the ending shelters prior to transport and they ended up sending sick dogs to several different states. And why they hid the deaths caused by a inexperienced transport crew, no one in the management part of relocation was held accountable for that.
I stopped donating to this organization a few years back when I found out that they do not send the money to other humane societies. I knew then that they were not spending the money where it should have gone.
This has to get out there! I thought like many it was all the same org. I don't want my donations going to Some a holes six figure salary while some poor dog or cat sleeps outside hungry.
This is what happens the world over. Our national spca spends millions in legal funds to prosecute owners who are deemed to have been cruel to their pet. Most cases don't even end up in a fine. I regularly receive "begging" letters asking me to donate to help animals who have been illtreated. As well as paying huge legal fees, they spend a fortune on their expensive head office furnishings, advertising and executive staff salaries. I now just shred the letters and donate to a local cat rescue centre.
The story with the Humane Society of the United States is not any different. The large organizations in many non-profit verticals have this issue. Donate locally. Follow your money, which you can do locally.
I just took an injured blue jay to the Houston SPCA about 2 months ago after my cat caught it and brought it inside. If I had known about this then, I would have definitely donated something.

I always wanted to know where the animals go. I tried to adopt from them and all they wanted was a donation but not for an adoption.

I have my own animal sanctuary, where I give my local wildlife a place to eat and hangout. And you can do that as well!
My local one is helpful, kind and I trust them.

OK..Quick story. Years ago I did volunteer work for the NYC Animal Shelter, which is a nightmare itself. It was well known that the ASPCA would not take in ANY animal that was not "young" or "cute" to be displayed at their shelter here. They would just send their unwanted to us. Also, they would come by once a week and take any kittens or puppies we had so they could adopt them out. Basically it's all just a huge show for them to back up their BS. They even charge their volunteers money to help out there. I'm glad someone is reporting on this, but I seriously doubt anyone will listen.
CEO of charity making nearly a million dollars a year?? That is crazy. Think of how many animals could be helped with that money. Sad, this is not uncommon with "charities".

Finally public. I was told years ago that if I wanted to make a real difference then donate directly to the local shelter. Reason - The incredible overhead of the ASPCA.
I've always supported my local animal shelter whether financially or even by donating things they needed. Seeing the ASPCA ads made me roll my eyes. Something always seemed off about them!

And if you live in Houston you know that there are thousands of animals that need that financial help. Big shame on the ASPCA but now we know where not to send our money and to only donate to local charities.

Like tobacco product cancer warnings, all ads by National charities should be required to post an accountant-certified disclosure of administration costs.

i still don't know what the ASPCA actually does. They don't respond when you try to contact them you will just get a voice message with a long winded disclaimer of what they DON'T Handle. They just ask for money 'donations'. If you want to report an animal cruelty case, many towns have an animal control agency/officer, and if they don't, then the case would be handled by a larger city in the area (or at the county level).
It took THIS LONG to catch on to this scam of a commercial?? 🤔
This is no better than so called "non-profit Hospitals", the one I used to work at was paying the CEO 4 MILLION A YEAR, and then it trickled down, but yet they still asked for donations and claimed they couldn't fully staff the hospital!!

I have been a long-time supporter of the ASPCA, and this just makes me beyond angry and sick!! The CEO should absolutely be ashamed! Guess I will go local now. I feel so sorry for the animals suffering who could be helped with all that wasted money.
When the ASPCA spends $10,000 per animal, you know something is wrong. Also, the ASPCA only covers the Tri-county area in NYC. You are ALWAYS better off giving to a local SPCA.
That’s the tip of the iceberg… if you know ppl with salary’s in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, they have credit cards linked to expense accounts that the company pays so these ppl go around paying almost everything with a corporate card. They basically get to pocket a huge proportion of their salary because they pay day to day expenses with the company they run $$$.
Yep. Haven’t donated to them for years. They bring in millions yet share nothing with local rescues.
My dog needs surgery and when I called them for help I never got a response. I knew they were shady then so I never reached out again
Maybe the only way to solve this crises is to shut down the ASPCA forever. Before it is shut down forever, divide up the ASPCA stolen money evenly among the SPCA sites.
Now I know why my local shelter scrapped the SPCA acronym and renamed themselves something much different.

This makes me so mad! They came to our small, rural town and collected money at our Walmart. We have one humane society for a county of 46,000+ people that has less that 6 people running it. I asked the volunteers collecting money how we could get a donation and they had no idea. I tried to contact anyone in their organization and couldn’t reach anyone. PEOPLE! Donate locally!
Why are non profit CEOs able to take home such big salaries🤔🤔

That’s the same thing the wounded warrior project does to veterans. I never have gotten financial help from these people, all they care to give you is trips. Why would I want a hunting trip or a shotgun when I’m struggling to pay my bills.
I never understood their methods. Not even their cruel “rare” commercials they air on the holidays. And never understood why they always used a rich celebrity to guilt me into paying a monthly fee. Why aren’t the rich doing so? They have more than me anyways. I never donated and now never will. Have been a proud rescue mom myself and will still continue to adopt them.
Unfortunately, I believe this misuse of funds is duplicated in many other charitable situations.
This is why I always changed the channel when Sarah McLachlan came on.

I give to my local Humane Society thrift store. Elderly women labor there for minimum wage along with volunteers who work for NO PAY to help the animals. That is where my donations go.
Hopefully they will look into the other areas of their operations. Let's look into their relocation program and how they don't require 14 day quarantine by the ending shelters prior to transport and they ended up sending sick dogs to several different states. And why they hid the deaths caused by a inexperienced transport crew, no one in the management part of relocation was held accountable for that.
I stopped donating to this organization a few years back when I found out that they do not send the money to other humane societies. I knew then that they were not spending the money where it should have gone.
Why did it take so long to tell us about it ?
This is disgusting, He should be in jail, none of that money should go to anyone but the animals, greedy individuals ruined the whole program.
This has to get out there! I thought like many it was all the same org. I don't want my donations going to Some a holes six figure salary while some poor dog or cat sleeps outside hungry.
This is why I always research CEO salary before I make a donation to any organization.

This is what happens the world over. Our national spca spends millions in legal funds to prosecute owners who are deemed to have been cruel to their pet. Most cases don't even end up in a fine. I regularly receive "begging" letters asking me to donate to help animals who have been illtreated. As well as paying huge legal fees, they spend a fortune on their expensive head office furnishings, advertising and executive staff salaries. I now just shred the letters and donate to a local cat rescue centre.

The story with the Humane Society of the United States is not any different. The large organizations in many non-profit verticals have this issue. Donate locally. Follow your money, which you can do locally.

I just took an injured blue jay to the Houston SPCA about 2 months ago after my cat caught it and brought it inside. If I had known about this then, I would have definitely donated something.
