A lovely family video. Thank you so much for sharing. I also started a bottom draw when I got engaged in the early 80s. Still have many things from that bottom draw that I still use over the years. No bottom draws today! Young people have most things when they get married. Dishwashers, freezers you name it they have it. They don't know how lucky they are today. Oh my giddy aunt I sound just like my mother 🤣🤣xx
I’m a Canadian with Ukrainian roots and I have made a Christmas pudding for 20 yrs. I make a rum sauce and the white sauce and we just love it, very rich but soooooo good, today you taught me how to ice the Christmas cake, thank you !
Bottom drawer! Haven’t heard of that in years. You made it all look very easy, professional looking though. Love your grandchildren’s antics during the video, they are hilarious!
My mum worked at Metal Box in Nottinghamshire for many years. She worked in the factory along with two of her sisters. She also had the same flour sifter. She also used to put sixpences in the Christmas pudding. Memories are wonderful.
I so enjoyed watching you ice the cake. I've not made a cake for the last few years as we never seem to eat it. I used to love it when my grandchildren were small but they are all grown up now or living in other countries. I'm going to watch you make the pudding xx
Hi Helen, enjoyed your video, brings back memories of the bottom drawer. Lovely to see Hattie and Billy hope everyone’s wishes come true. Thanks again x
I am 77 lived cooking but never made either a Christmas cake or pudding. I will save this vudro and make it next year, perhaps in a square tin so I can cut it in four then gift it. Thanks Helen. HB
Nice to see you and the family baking/decorating, don’t have the inclination to do it myself, no patience, but it reminds me of my big family at Christmas all mucking in, happy memories ❤
Hi 👋 Helen I remember buying things for your bottom draw how things change your cake looked lovely I hope Christmas pud is a hit it looked great the grandkids are growing very quickly 😊
Oh Helen how can it be so satisfying to see you doing christmas "things"! Easy you say, well everything is in the eyes of the beholder. My cake would not be that nice, my thumbs is in the middle. Loved the way Rob mad a stir in the middle of his working with essentialls. Thanks Helen for keeping us feeling good.❤
Wow that's a blast from the past about putting things away in your bottom drawer 😳. Is it even a thing any more 🤷♀️. Both the cake and pudding look lovely. Thanks for sharing. 😊
This takes me back decorating the Christmas cake with my mother, she used to use royal icing, we made snow peeks and all the decorations we could fit on lol! 🎅🌲🎄xx it’s not a Christmas cake without the marzipan best bit I love it! Xx
The cake looks good I more or less decorate in a similar way with stars and ribbon, I used to do lots of fancy piping but now struggle to squeeze the piping bags and I think the stars look effective, I buy our pudding. always nice to see your lovely grandchildren, they will break some hearts in the future x
Lovely cake Helen. I do think anyone that makes food in front of a camera are very brave, so much can go wrong, however never on your videos!! Thank you Helen. Lovely Grandchildren. Take care xx
Lovely very, very nostalgic for me, we always had the icing forked up and the decorations, same every year. Wonderful, and also making a wish with the stirring of the pudding. ⛄️🎄🦌
Lovely cake and pudding, looked scrumptious. Bottom drawer.....love it.. i had so many pirex dishes with red flowers on and candlewick bedspreads, oh and fibreglass curtains 😅.(memories) Lovely to see the family too.TTFN XX
I remember when I was a child,a long time ago (I’m 79) my mom would make the marzipan out of ground almond, sugar, egg whites, and I suppose a little salt, and of course royal icing.I just love marzipan,I can’t even trust myself with it,I will eat the whole thing.I seem to remember the plum pudding being steamed in the old copper,in the kitchen.Icing sugar has cornflower in it to stop it sticking together.
This was a fun video! Your Christmas cake looks beautiful...like one from Betty's. A ribbon would look very pretty. Your grandchildren are so cute and look like they are not shy on camera.
I don’t think fermented jam will hurt you, just taste a bit off.The only thing I think is it’s best to use a new jar,as one you have been digging into could have bacteria in it,then it would go moldy.
Used to make a square Christmas cake, and almond paste for the top rather than marzipan. Haven't for years but you make everything appear so easy because you take your time (despite saying you're impatient, as am I)!
I did as well back in the day it has a more gentle flavour. I also had a square tin. Then made Royal Icing. It became too easy to buy one ready made later...Hv a great Xmas. 😊
I just have to tell you that my black scarf has just arrived from Black and I just LOVE it. Thank you for recommending it. I have just arrived in Hampshire from Yorkshire. Looking forward to exploring around Winchester.
My brother in law worked for Metalbox at Wantage for a few years! My sister was a teacher at the Wantage Secondary School during the time they lived locally.😊🐝
Good memories of baking with our Mams. Made the Marzipan and the Royal icing. Mam made 2 cakes. One for Christmas and one for New Year. Also another 2 later, one for St. Patrick's Day and one for Easter.
Hi Helen, funny you should talk about metal box, I used to work in Baker Street in London I worked for Marks and Spencer in their head office and metal box was the last block from us. I always made my cake the end of September and every couple of weeks I used stick little holes in the bottom and put some brandy in it, then about 2 December I would marzipan it and my hubby used to ice it on Christmas Eve he loved to do that.❤️❤️
Hi Helen, that was so opportune as I had made my Xmas cake (first time) and had bought the marzipan and icing sugar from Lakeland Plastics and had no idea how to go about doing the cake, so thank you and tomorrow I can go ahead and finish the cake, although I don’t possess a blow torch. Nice to see Billy and Hattie again performing in the background 🤣and Katie has gorgeous hair.🏴xx
Hi Helen , haven’t made my cake yet 😮, but just going to make a light fruit cake , I just love marzipan & icing , so I like royal icing best 😋. But that was interesting watching you marzipan the cake . Used to make a pudding , but not now 😂. I also had a bottom drawer 😂.
I used to make my royal icing and as you say decorate it with peaks so it looked like snow and put lots of ornaments on it the children used to love it. Now I buy a small one for my son and I the rest of the family don’t like Christmas Cake.❤️❤️
Helen you can warm your marzipan in Micro wave for a min.ish to warm it will make it easier to use . That is right about the jam you have been luck, I have iced wedding cakes etc for many years . Hope this helps And yes 'Bottom draw 'do they still do this????
Lovely video Helen I luckily do know about boiling the apricot jam I doubt a Christmas cake would last long enough to ferment I have never made a Christmas pudding though because none of them eat it, I on the other hand love it and yours looked delicious, Billy has got so tall you might want to remind him that this video is on the internet forever lol he will hate it when he’s 15 upwards and it’s shown around the family. ❤❤
Thanks Helen enjoyed the video. As a child used to love being in the kitchen with my mum making the Christmas puddings. She always left them until the last minute to make..We would stir and make our wishes too. Lovely Christmas memories. I really love the top you have on where is that from please?

Nice the family was there to help lcan just imagine your home just traditional Christmas how wonderful all the best and happy memories regards Lesley in anglesey 👍🙋🦴🐾💐🌲⛄🥧🥂🍾🎉
Hi Helen great video. How do you store the pudding after slow cooking it. Looked great and nice and moist. Missed a few videos as just got back from the uk. A lot of catching up to do. Thanks as always.
I absolutely love Christmas cake.My daughter always made a beautiful one.Life has got too busy with careers, children etc.I buy M and S one.Im the only one eats it and i do.🎄🎍🎄🎍
Helen, just out of interest, how much marzipan and fondant icing did you buy. My "first time made" Christmas Cake is an 8 inch and I have got 500g of marzipan and 1kg of fondant icing. The marzipan says to cover a 6 inch cake, so thought if you had the same amount, then I would be ok. Your cake and pudding looked fantastic, hope my cake comes out as well

Did you put water in the slow cooker or just the bowl. The first year I’ve made mincemeat out of the leftover fruit from my cake making lol. I make my cake pretty much the same way as yourself as I’m no baker either xx
Good Morning, this is a random request for your help, could you PLEASE tell me the make of your air fryers I remember you talking about one ( not ninja) that was very good, thank you sooo much.xx
Hi Rhonda, I'm using the two Ultenic ones that I was given. I have a Ninja, but thb I never use it now. I'll link the video here. xx. My mum worked at Metal Box in Nottinghamshire for many years. She worked in the factory along with two of her sisters. She also had the same flour sifter. She also used to put sixpences in the Christmas pudding. Memories are wonderful.

I’m going to ice my Christmas cake next week. When I was young my dad used to to make our cake and also did royal icing on it.
I think everyone did back then. xx

Thank you, it's from M and S many years ago xx
Loved watching…. So do you freeze the Christmas cake and pudding until Christmas Day?
No, they are so rich they can be stored easily xx
Thank you… you have given me the courage to try them this year❤
Hello Helen, billy and Hattie are getting so tall, both good looking children. This is my second Christmas with your channel love watching all your videos especially your Christmas cooking ones.

I cooked my christmas cake in the slow cooker this year never done that before. Looks OK.
Fingers crossed xx
Wish we in Canada could get packaged icing like yours for the icing. I made your Christmas cake recipe last year and it was delicious.
Thank you very much xx
Hi Helen great video. How do you store the pudding after slow cooking it. Looked great and nice and moist. Missed a few videos as just got back from the uk. A lot of catching up to do. Thanks as always.
Welcome back.
I just store in a cool dark place xx
I absolutely love Christmas cake.My daughter always made a beautiful one.Life has got too busy with careers, children etc.I buy M and S one.Im the only one eats it and i do.🎄🎍🎄🎍
I love it xx
Helen, just out of interest, how much marzipan and fondant icing did you buy. My "first time made" Christmas Cake is an 8 inch and I have got 500g of marzipan and 1kg of fondant icing. The marzipan says to cover a 6 inch cake, so thought if you had the same amount, then I would be ok. Your cake and pudding looked fantastic, hope my cake comes out as well
I think you'll be fine, just use plenty of icing sugar and roll it out thinly. Good luck. You'll have loads of icing. xx
Everything looked great - last Sunday (Nov.26) was Stir-it-Up day, although I've never made a Christmas Pudding either! Not a big thing here in the US, so I usually just buy a small one from the British store, and make some Brandy Butter. Christmas cake (decorated) is also not a thing, and the fruitcake here in the US is usually filled with lots of candied cherries and pecans, and undecorated. Made me home sick!
Ah, glad you enjoyed it xx
I usually let the marzipan dry out but maybe I don’t need to. Lovely cake.
I don't think you need to with fondant icing. I never have anyway xx
Hello liked how you iced your cake etc. I presume the marzipan and icing dough were readymade or did you make both yourself? Here, we make both of these things at home which is rather tedious and time consuming needing expertise to get it done right. I wish we could get this readymade stuff here ....Oh to be young again !! ....and have all the energy to make it for Christmas 😂😂😅 ... after retirement..I feel its hard ... blessings for your channel Helen!! luv Andrea ..India
Yes, we are lucky enough to have all of these things to make life easier. We just take it for granted until it's pointed out. Thank you xx
Cake looks great ,Billy has got so tall, lovely to see you all having a stir of the Christmas pud 🎄Helen does the glass dome over the cake keep it fresh for a long time?
I think the icing does that but the dome helps a little xx
Better get my skates on - haven't made my cake yet xxx
There's plenty of time xx
I used to think the marzipan was the best bit. I once went to a wedding where the marzipan was deeper than the cake. Yummy. Sadly I am now allergic to nuts and marzipan is now ‘off’.
Oh what a shame. xx
Did you put water in the slow cooker or just the bowl. The first year I’ve made mincemeat out of the leftover fruit from my cake making lol. I make my cake pretty much the same way as yourself as I’m no baker either xx
Water half way up the side for the pudding and topped it up before I went to bed. xx
I might have missed it but did you let the marzipan dry out before putting on the final icing??
No, I never have.... xx
Lots of great tips, who'd have known you had to boil the jam eh?
I never, but when I said it to Mum she said "of course" haha xx
😋😋😋😘❤️

@@Helenmaryjo Hi, thank you so much, I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas, stay safe, xx
Thanks for interesting video. I was told you have to let marzipan dry out for a day before icing. Any thoughts?
I think with the fondant icing it won’t matter, but with royal icing you would need to dry it,or the royal icing could melt.
Well done to all the mixers hope their wishes come true
So do I.
Thank you very much xx
I have always let the marzipan dry for a day or so before icing it
I never have, it's never been a problem xx
