    I've been a sedan and coupe guy all my life. I've owned mostly sedans (six out of 10 cars owned) and the car I kept the longest (14 years and counting) is a coupe. I currently own a sedan (Jaguar) and a coupe (BMW) and going to keep them for as long as I can.

    The problem here is big fat SUV have a high profit margins. That's the main reason, smaller cars need more time to develop but with SUVs all you need to do change few headlights and panels. It's been said SUV are generally unsafer due to how many corners are cut and lawmakers want bigger cars out there. The issue is it causes damage on the road because the vehicles are bigger and heavier.

    • @whyjnot420
      @whyjnot420 3 місяці тому +5

      When it comes to heavier, that is really across the board. Small sedans, coupes, pickups, hatchbacks, whatever. E.g. the 2014 Frontier I have actually weighs a thousand pounds more than the 99 Dakota I had (curb weights are about 3,400 & 4400 lbs). Both are very similar in design, though the Dakota had a V8 and no back doors, while the Frontier is a V6 and has suicide doors. The Dakota could handle a little more weight in the bed as well. Aside from the engine difference, the rest of the differences are minor like that last one.

    I personally love sedans and drive an Accord myself, they’re more comfortable to me and more fun to drive. I don’t have to raise my seat all the way up to see over the hood while having my seat also forward most of the way either which in my opinion is uncomfortable to drive and I do prioritize comfort which I am more comfortable in a sedan than I am in a SUV, which I’ll admit having one is nice when you do have to move stuff around but 90% of the time I’m not hauling around stuff all the time for the most part anyways.

    • @louiszhang3050

      I own an Accord too (10th gen) and I've taken this thing off-roading in the mountains, moved to and from college with it, camping, canoeing (not the car), etc. and it fits stuff better than are lot of CUVs tbh. The trunk is deceptively huge and my friends always love the rear legroom. Only thing I needed an SUV/pick up to haul was my bedframe when I graduated. But not a bad trade-off for a 37 mpg average and a car that handles.

    IMHO - It's not about sedans disappearing.
    It's about TRUNKS disappearing.
    A hatch cargo area (be it on a minivan, SUV or an old VW Rabbit) proved it is more efficient to hold bulky items than a long, shallow trunk.
    Combine that with desire for a higher H-point for aging car buyers, and you have American roads filled with compact yet roomy RAV4, Escape, and CR-V types replacing the Cutlasses & Crown Vics of 40 years ago.

    • @whyjnot420
      @whyjnot420 4 місяці тому +4

      I went from coupes to pickups almost 25 years ago. The only thing I miss from coupes in general are the trunks (and the back seat of the 91 Cougar I had, it was basically a couch and I spent many a drunken night passed out in it)
      A hatch can be a bit more convenient when you need to get this or that out and are ok in general, but I find that trunks trump being convenient, by actually being useful in and of themselves as a completely separate storage area (truly completely separate with any cars that don't have fold down back seats). Yeah I can get a locking bed cover or cap for a pickup, but that is always going to be extra. A sedan or coupe (daily driver coupes) will simply have a trunk. While an SUV or whatnot just has that open cargo area that can both easily be seen and accessed (which are not always benefits).
      addendum: On the plus side, getting vehicles without a trunk made me a lot better in regard to the random crap I keep in my vehicles.

    And here we are where the latest EV regulations permit $85k SUVs to receive tax credit, but only $55k for sedans. It's almost like the US purposely wants everyone to buy more expensive, larger, less safe (for the general public), and less efficient vehicles on purpose. However, I do see a greater awareness on the issue and the vast majority of young men I know buy sedans/hatchbacks. It seems like they (and maybe retired men) will be the primary demographic for cars in the future.

    I feel like one reason sedans have become less popular is the deisgns. I think the sloping roofs, big rims, and sporty looks are the only way to attract people to them now.
    A large, comfortable, subtle looking sedan made for cruising isnt a draw for the mass market anymore. Because a SUV will also give more comfort and feeling of space. Sedans have to look as sporty as possible. They have very very low roof lines now and are extremely low to the ground. It looks nice. But practically is gone. I am only 5'9 yet even sedans like a Camry have my head hitting the roof in back. They feel like dungeons. I dont find sedans comfortable places to be in at all. The most comfortable one was a Crown Victoria with the tall roof line and space. Something no modern sedan will give. New ones feel so cramped. Also they are so low. Ive been in several ones that are so low they get damged when we go on gravel or even roads incline suddenly or driveways. They arent made for anything other than pristine flat paved roads. Something many Americans dont have. Im not going offroading except in grass or dirt roads. Yet my only option is a CUV or SUV.
    Also the trunk. If you ever need more space than a trunk offers the only option really is a SUV. A hatchback is typically always compact. People hate wagons so they arent a option. Minivans have a stigma and also can get very large. Larger than what many need. And low to the ground.
    A SUV is basically the only alternative as they come in so much variety and shapes and have a draw and appeal deisgn wise.

    You would think that if manufacturers started to focus their entire business on exploiting a loophole, legislators would adjust the legislation accordingly. Especially when 1200 pedestrian deaths could have been avoided. Regarding the performance aspect, where would you drive these powerful monsters anyway? Speed limits in the US are lower than elsewhere and most people use their cars mostly on parking lots and in traffic jams.

    • @turbo_cafe
      @turbo_cafe  4 місяці тому +3

      Good points! It does seem odd that the laws haven’t caught up yet. Lol it’s hard to discuss that aspect without sounding like a conspiracy theorist, but for sure it’ll only get worse if there’s money to be made. As for the performance aspect, I think some people just like having the power, even if it mostly stays untapped during daily commutes. Guess it’s like having a high-end sound system-you might not use it to its full potential, but it’s nice to know it’s there!

    It may have been caused PARTIALLY by legislative mistake (giving small trucks a pass), but it was, and is, mostly as a result of the manufacturer's greed. Once they made the baby steps to converting to trucks and SUVs, they found they could increase the prices for no real reason, and the public would pay it. Your premise that the change was due entirely to government mandate is very disingenuous.
    The change was by far, mostly due to the manufacturers wanting to sell the high priced vehicles and not wanting to sell the more reasonably priced ones. That is why they spend billions of dollars lobbying Congress to get the CAFE standards written just the way they want. Right now, the CAFE legislation acts as a good excuse for them to wash their hands of the greed.
    "It's not us doing it, the government made us do it." If that was true, why does my under $20,000 (out the door) Versa, with a manual transmission, get 43+ miles per gallon. Obviously, these small cars can meet the CAFE standards just fine.

    It’s all part of the inflation process.
    Making a 100 K salary now is pretty much like making 55K just a few years ago. as a result, about 98% of the population, can’t keep up with the inflation costs by making more money so they need to focus their efforts on cost saving. But that’s not possible because all of the chips are in place to defend against it
    I know what I’ll do. I’ll save some money by bring my lunch to work. Great, but then you go to the grocery store to load up and you realize that the prices have gone up anywhere from 25 to 75%….. Maybe you want downscale where are you living. I bought this place for 150,000. I can sell it now for probably about 350,000, so there’s a $200,000 profit. I’ll just downscale. Then you come to realize that you wanted to scale down to cost about 350 $400. I guess the next thing is the car who needs an SUV or a truck. I can go by myself a compact or subcompact. It will cost me $38 to fill the tank instead of $85, and the car will cost me 200 bucks a month instead of 550… well, guess what. They’re all caps are no more compact or subcompacts. However, there aren’t even really any more sedans unless you want to buy an electric vehicle which is the dumbest automotive one can possibly make. So you go to the website for each car manufacturer and you type in “cars”. Expecting to find Ford fusions, Ford focuses, Chevy Cruzes, Chevy Impalas, Optimas, Rios, Altimas and Versas.. but nope, those cars are all gone or going away. But when you type in “cars”. What you’ll see our Nissan rogues, Toyota RAV4s, Subaru Crosstrek, Kia, Sportage, and so on and so on and so on. So for $2500 down and $385 per month, you can drive some ugly disgusting, poor excuse of a vehicle that nobody in their right mind would want, and I can assure you have not demanded. The car industry is not reacting to the wants of the American consumer. The American consumer is being forced to react to the product that they are shoving down our throats.

    And here we go with the automotive sexism. What makes car guys think that us women don't like cars?? Or for that matter, performance vehicles and trucks? I don't know what makes men think that women are all content with being good little wives and mothers driving minivans and safe wagons (or if we're single and childless, compact cars and little convertibles) but nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the main buyers of trucks and SUVs are very much women. Growing up, my mom had five children and absolutely HATED minivans. Her dream vehicle and ideal vehicle was always an SUV (apart from also wanting a 90s Cadillac Eldorado). Believe it or not, it's not only men that like vehicles like sports cars, and roadsters, and big trucks and suvs.
