I was only in second grade when this song came out. But I have remembered it since I heard it. I have vivid memories of my dad driving around with this song playing on the radio. I see from the comments that many people are mentioning Philly. I was born and reared in Houston, TX, so I don't have all of the background info that you all have. Wow--haven't seen this in years----I thought it was filmed in Detroit or something, because the song was a small hit there. The group, Pieces of a Dream, were noted at the time for being a full-fledged jazz group at such a young age--they were just into their early twenties when their debut album came out either 1982 or '83 (when I first heard the song) and they went on be to be a well known jazz group thoughout the '80's---this song was one of their very first R&B hits. I thought it was Luther Vandross singing it, because it sounded so much like his style at the time. Always loved this song---takes me back to my childhood days of having my ears glued to the radio.

Also saw the lead guitarist, one Cedric Napoleon, play with Grover Washington (Roberta Flack was the opening act) back in 1992 at a live Chene Park nighttime concert in Detroit, right on the river---it was so beautiful. The funniest thing I remember was that when it started to rain on that cool summer night, people in the speedboats floating nearly in the Detroit River listening to the concert just pulled their tarps up over the boat and kept on listening to the concert!

Back when black people still learned how to sing and play instruments. This song will always be for the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers.

Hard to believe that it's been almost 40 years since this song was released. I was so happy that Dr J finally got a ring, and then this tune commemorated the title. Great music, and I still love it today!
