    You have a two-fer going here. One, you are getting your system built yourself, saving money and getting it done right. Two, you are getting lots of exercise, keeping yourself lean and mean. All that exercise has you looking like a young buck ranch hand!

    Raise/extend those clean outs to ground level, or slightly above, now. Build something creative around to conceal.
    Toilet "whoosh" and flow depends upon the toilet design flow and volume of water per flush.
    Know that the 1"/48" slope is minimum, more slope = better flow in the waste line.
    Do you have a septic tank closed system, or septic with leach field?
    Rent a trenching power tool for that 100 foot run to the cabin. That's 4 feet of slope!
    Will you need to elevate the cabin floor, or have that toilet on a platform? Because I dont know if the current septic connection is 48" below.
    Get that digging chore done before spring/summer heat!

    I am sure that you know. your cleanout sweep is backwards as your cleanout will normally point downhill... and another one should be near the cabin . (Cleanouts are normally near the source of the sewage, as you can get snakes that are as long as you want.

    When I was putting in my sewer like you are, I found myself having to fill in where I'd dug too deep pretty often ... and moving a side out because my trench was getting crooked or the bend didn't bend where I expected. It's a great job to be done with! As for whether a steep drop on a toilet makes it flush better, no. As long as you have a good slope all the way, it'll flush just as well shallow or deep. With a long drop, solids can get left behind when the water hits the elbow. If you angle the pipe 45 degrees from the toilet down to the main line instead of doing a long vertical drop, it's better.

    Don there are solar panels for electric fencing. I'd bet 2 one inch wide electric fencing strips would be enough to keep the deer and cattle out of your pond.
    Cougar urine would work and yes you can buy it. But then perhaps cougars would start drinking out of your pond.
    Remember the wooden plywood silhouette cut outs of leaning men smoking a pip near houses/barns? They were painted all black so they looked like shadows.
    Maybe a large one of those with red or yellow driveway reflector 'eyes' might be too scary for deer and cows. Couse you could always take a pee near it for affect. :))
    Or the eyes could be small solar motion sensing security lights.

    Don, in Michigan a water closet vertical discharge can drop 24” before tying into the building drain. The building drain vent must be at least 1/2 the diameter of the building drain. So in your case if you turn up the 4” vertical you need a 2” vent. If you reduce to 3” you can vent with 11/2”. Good luck!

    Hi Don, I don't know if you may have already considered a 12v cattle fence. They are not injurious to animals (we used to play dare games as kids touching them). Once animals learn to recognise the line, they will keep away from it. It would keep deer and cattle at whatever distance you choose from your pond. They run on a 12v car battery.

    Vertical drop is not really important with sewerage lines. You want the horizontal runs to have the proper drain angle. Keeps the solids and liquids flowing. Go with whatever the building code calls for. consider getting a strand or two of electric fence around the pond and wrap it around the wooden fence post of the bird feeder. A solar powered electric fence charger is around fifty bucks at Tractor Supply store. Wall plug ones are a lot cheaper, but not so good for off grid use. I use an electric fence charger to keep the squirrels out of my bird feeder, and it's very effective except during rainstorms when the GFCI trips out.

    • @dalesql2969
      @dalesql2969 8 місяців тому +3

      Also, bury one of those warning tapes along the trench above the pipe, If you have some scrap electrical wire, put a few wraps around the cleanout pipes just below the top. Also wrap the scrap wires around the pipe at the corners and Ys. these can be located with a metal detector saving future you hassle if you ever need to dig them up.

And I'm sure you know what these are and they are making a nest on the back of my Powerhouse just like they did last year so I'm really excited! I keep a clean mixing trough out in the yard and I fill it with water for all the other birds that come and go. And I really miss the Gambel quail... up until a few weeks ago there was a flock of about 60 to 80 of them that would come by every morning and every evening for water. I think the coyote and fox have done a job on them and there's only a few around now. I would like to see a lot more of these quail, what's the best way to attract them? 😊 thanks Don.

      I also have Says Phoebe here on my property but they dont nest. They nest at the neighbors across the road. I have both Gambels and Scaled Quail here. Its unlikely predators have decimated your group. They move around depending on the season. Next time your at a feed store you might want to purchase a Quail Block. Yummy seed for them and they love it. Of course that can attract rodents and then rattlers. So it depends on your habitat etc.

    I am sure you know that the fall on the sewer inside the foundation is 1/8'' per foot. Make sure on the line going to the little house has enough ground cover , that's 25'' of rise on the little house sewer line@100'

    The drop doesn’t matter, but no more than 3 feet, just make sure the elbow is a sweeper 90 degree bend. And of course the entire system has to be a 2 degree drop, no more, no less.

    I had my appendix taken out at 46. You’re biggest issue is the stitches they used to sew you up. Obviously you don’t want to break one. This could cause major issues. Make sure you’re healed properly.

      Packed Sand tends to be easier on PVC. Although I am using schedule 40 which is reported to be real super impact resistant and tough.

      HI Gene as I mentioned in the video the neighbors specifically put out water for the mule deer and others. For me it mostly comes down to a limited water supply. Most of my water comes from harvesting it from my roof. Every drop is precious.

    Not sure on Arizona plumbing code but in CA if using 4" you can use 1/8" per foot. You want the water to push the solids, not go over top of the solids.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  8 місяців тому +2

      More than once I encountered the concept that 1/4" was best. So that is what I went with. With owner/builder opt out building permit I fortunately do not have to adhere to codes. That said I found time and time again 1/4" would work great. Thanks for watching.

    • @jamespeterson686
      @jamespeterson686 6 місяців тому

      Don
      The issue isn’t the 1/4 vs 1/8 it’s the 3 inch vs 4 inch. As the last commenter mentioned you want the water to float or push the solids out of the way. That’s why you don’t want greater than 1/4 per foot as the fluids will go too quickly and run around the solids.

    I think you already know the toilet flushing question's answer. What's the difference between flushing a toilet on 2F vs. flushing one on 1F? We've all done both at least hundreds of times in our lives.

  • @thomasgardner1734
    @thomasgardner1734 8 місяців тому +2

    The drop distance does not matter. The proper angle of the overall pipe is what is critical. Too steep the water goes down and the poop will stay behind and end up plugging your pipe. Too shallow and everything stays in the pipe. Do your research and find out how many inch drop in how many feet. Your system won't work if it is not right. I used to install septic systems but it has been over 40 years ago.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  8 місяців тому +3

      Hi Thomas that is why I made my pipe exact in the drop angle. I also mentioned it more than once so folks would understand that I thoroughly understood the 1/4" per foot drop. I went carefully down the whole pipe checking that angle. I felt I was very anal retentive about it. Pardon the pun.

    Why 1% (1/4 inch per foot)
    Because you don't want the liquids going faster than the solids...
    You want the liquids staying behind pushing

    Is your small cabin too far away to use the 1/4” per foot of drop.

    • @fhuber7507
      @fhuber7507 8 місяців тому +1

      If it is, he has to raise the cabin or lower the septic tank.
      You can raise the cabin and make a berm over the sewer line to get the depth of coverage for frost prevention in the pipe.
      Inadequate slope = clogged pipe every time.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  8 місяців тому +2

      Naturally I will check this out if I run sewer to the little cabin. In my favor is that the Septic tank because of land slope is considerably lower than the cabin.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  6 місяців тому +1

      Great question. Most of the pond water comes from my rainwater harvesting ability here. But 2-3 times per year I purchase water at $225.00 per delivery. Both the cows and deer can easily trot down the road to other water sources. Plus they knock rocks into the pond and the deer graze on valuable trees I just planted. For them its just recreation. Not necessity.
