Just sent you a fax comment (I think!). Have loved your channel for a long time - down to the little squeaky sound dub you use whenever someone is screwing in something! It’s brilliant, nostalgic, reassuring, and wholesome content. Please keep it up since we love the Retro Recipe family!
Why would anyone say stuff like that on a channel that's all about retro the world can be a messed up place at times. Love the video and may even send a fax as not sent one for a long time 🙂. As always great work and am so looking forward to seeing what you bring us all next. You guys take care and have a great weekend🙂🙂
I agree, but it's even more absurd at non controversial spaces like this. If this were a political channel or something like that, it would be a bit more expected. I wish you, them and everybody else here a lovely holiday season. 🎄☃❄️ @@jwb718
I've realized that a comment or two I've made in the distant past was rude and insensitive and I apologize for that. I've spent the past couple of years or so being more mindful of such things. You do good work, my friend.
That takes a lot to admit to and you have my instant respect for it. I don't specifically remember your comments, but am always happy to live in the present. Thank you for sharing all that.
I really appreciate the channel. My 2¢: the comments section is a great place for learning - so please don’t disable it. Ignore hateful comments - just negative people who get pleasure from putting others down. Easier said than done, and that’s why we can’t have nice things. Just know that the rest of us will continue to enjoy all the nice things you show on the channel, and the great positive energy of the hosts and guests!
You're right, and I've learned that in some pieces of nasty feedback is a nugget of gold to be listened to. It has certainly helped me improve many things such as audio quality over the 5+ years.
It's terrible that such a heartfelt and obviously well-meaning channel (and presenters) focusing on some of the most universal and innocent nostalgia possible is getting grief. Do what you need to do to keep your family safe and also know that there are a lot more of us out there that respect you and appreciate the way your content affects our lives for the better. Minimise the stress where you can, but please keep fighting the good fight.
Oh man, same here. I just felt disappointed by that phone call to Spectrum, especially considering how Peri talked about how saddened he felt about getting rude comments. I mean, getting upset that a VoIP company didn't provide landline service came off like someone who was incredulous because they couldn't understand that McDonald's didn't sell Whoppers.
Spectrum never did regular landline phones, so it's not surprising it couldn't work and they had no idea how to direct his request. Otherwise, it's just some random person who's barely trained who can't say no.
@@nickfifteen Yeah I felt genuinely sorry for the lady on the phone having to cop that nonsense. The VoIP service would've worked fine for fax and pining over a traditional central office landline is wild. Looks like the PSTN landline will go the way of the dodo in 2025 in the USA. I genuinely adore all Retro Recipes videos but this one has given me a sour aftertaste.
Wow another great video, I was so cross when you said people were leaving those horrible type of comments. *hugs* to you and your whole family. I totally agree with you about the phone lines being a great backup. There will be a time when the internet goes down due to an emergency and/or power outage and most people will have no idea what is going in. Where I live we can no longer get land lines at all. So I have a few, nice SW & HAM radios so at least I might be able to hear what is happening if it's long term. As far as fax technology, without getting too specific, there are still parts of the government that only uses secure faxes to transmit certain types of information as it's by far still the most secure in that arena.
That is some serious dedication - you must have replaced every component on the board? Glad you got it working in the end, knew you would, you always do! :) Keep up the great work. By the way PCB stands for Phax and Call using Bloody expensive phone line.... doesn't it?
Sudden explosion in eFax accounts 😁 Thank you for a lovely episode. For some time I've been wanting to get a landline phone. Right now I'm considering a 'GSM Gateway', a box with a SIM slot and RJ11 socket. That is probably the closest I'll get to it. The 80's and 90's had some well-designed handset models.
It's been a while since I had a landline, but my understanding is that the "baby Bells" essentially have a monopoly on telephone lines. So, you'd have to call your local phone company to get a line installed (that is, old school telephone line as opposed to VoIP).
I was lucky when I bought a Portastudio from Canada that it has a jumper you could reposition to swap back from 110v to 240v. Good job I thought of that before simply plugging it in in my excitement! Great repair job. The printer at work used to receive faxes and most of the time all we got were the equivalent of spam emails today. Offers of cheap holiday packages where you had to send the money off first and stuff like that. Beware of anyone trying to sign you up for a time share deal on a Spanish island! As for stupid people with idiotic comments, sadly these knobheads live amongst us but Darwin usually ensures they don’t live long and prosper. Keep up the great work. Sorry for the long comment but I have to mention the hard drive on the Amiga you showed, that I lusted after as a kid. I think it was 240Mb if memory serves. I did end up with a Amiga 600 with an internal 200Mb drive! Geoff Crammond’s F1 GP was the first game to reside on that!
Just watching your video now, absolutely shocked that you receive death threats, particularly to your wife and dogs. Bloody hell! I usually only briefly look through comments so I've not seen anything bad at all here so far. Anyway, as for Fax, I used fax until the mid 2000s, I've always been fond of the technology but sadly my machine went unused in the end so it went. I used Bars & Pipes btw back in the day on the Amiga, I recall you saying in the past you worked for them. Very cool! Keep up the amazing work, as I've said in the past, the production quality and small details you put in are mind blowing. Yes, I always notice that CGI shining effect you add to the TARDIS' lamp in your room when a certain camera angle is used 🙂
I have watched your videos as well over the past few years and your content is always great, interesting, informative and engaging. Please keep these videos coming, I hope you both get more positive comments than negative and keep it all in perspective. You guys rock!
Really cool episode which reminded me that I still have my old fax machine boxed away somewhere in the attic, its prehistoric and hasnt been used since the last ice age but dont fret as I have an ancient Brother A3 office printer that i picked up at a local charity shop for £15 that also has fax, hurrah...pity i dont have a landline anymore!
Truth be told, I would be fascinated to see if this pans out - and *how* it pans out. My good friend Jim lives in Tulsa. He has still got his landline and two phones without electricity. He’s going to his grave with that line. It was incredible that his part of Tulsa was ravaged by a freak storm back in the summer of 2023 and his phone line was functioning straight through the resultant power outage. I’m sure he was thoroughly thankful to be an AT&T customer then.
I know a kind person when I see one, even if it's through a UA-cam video. And you two absolutely fall into that category. How can someone not like you? I'm shocked, really. 😢 People sending death threats should be prosecuted, period.
We still use faxes at work. Although we use e-fax instead of actual fax machines. Despite the availability of e-mails and secure document capabilities customers feel better sending sensitive stuffs via fax when in fact we get them via e-mail from e-fax service. Although the e-mails are secured via TLS during transmission to our e-mail servers. Faxes will be around for few more years.
For the first bit of December 2007, the internet at my college was down! Not only that, but my parents wanted me to send them my Christmas list! What did I do? I typed my list on a college computer, printed it and after asking a staff member, I used one of their fax machines to fax it to my Dad's then-workplace!
Whilst that is correct, the legislation applies to the newer VoIP lines which means they don't have to require the needed bitrate, but as mentioned I also just wanted to do it the original way :)
Copper is being phased out in uk also by bt new copper installs are not avalible to anyone after sep 5th 2023 the landline plugs in the router 👍🏻 battery backup is avalible if you need to not loose power else no phone #thefuture
When I started work in 2003 I had a fax machine on my desk, the Samsung SF-3100, it was an inkjet fax machine so you didn't need expensive thermal fax paper. I hardly sent any faxes using it, email was taking over from the fax, though we did have one supplier who we had to send orders to via fax. We had it set, so that people had to ring up before and say I want to send a fax, because you used to get spam faxes, if you left it on auto answer there was the possibility of arriving next morning to find all your paper and ink wasted on spam messages.
I retired in 2016, and at that time my employer was still using fax machines. We had at least three, with different phone numbers. Also, about three years after that, I had to send a couple of faxes related to (I think) a real estate transaction, and had to go to a UPS Store in Nevada to get them to send it. Faxes are very much alive and well.
Definitely no hate comments from me. You are all a beacon of nostalgic light in this too-toxic world. I have never used a fax although there was one at the company I used to work at. I take it Ladyfractic doesn't appreciate a long screw? Maybe she's just too busy. Great video Perifractic.

I am impressed by you perseverance to save this fax machine, I would have given up long before this! I have used plenty of fax machines during their peak, but never found them as a piece of technology I would preserve.
I wish people knew how much anguish they could cause with a comment. Kinda. I'm sure that would reduce nasty comments by 99% or more, but there are a few sick individuals out there who would still send nastygrams because they know precisely how hurtful they are. I still think it'd be a net good. Maybe some kind of emotional intelligence education needs to be standard practice in schools. Anyway, I love this channel, I love the content you guys make, I love the doggos, I love the weird humor. This place is right up my alley. It feels cozy, like catching up with an old friend. Keep doing what you love, it makes for a great channel. Mute the haters, they just want attention.

Ironically, I’ve been looking for a fax machine to try with the VoIP line I recently installed complete with old ringy phone. I’m told it should work at or below 9600bps. We’ll see.
Please don't acknowledge the negative comments, ever! Been sub'd to u for years and fully understand your vids and perspective. Keep going geezer, even if I have to buy a fax machine 😂 Although we have a few gathering dust in the office 😅

Watching this in the gym this morning, I must admit my heart did sink a bit and was just sad that both you have to put up with the vitriol that comes through. Surely this isn't from the true retro community and probably some sad keyboard warrior. Enough said, so wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a New Year. Keep the good work up 👍
My fragile retro soul dances on calming 80's neon clouds every time you release a new video! How anyone could not love the fractic family is beyond my bits! Just yesterday when I was installing a new recepticle I instinctively made the little squeaking sound. You guys are faxing brilliant, wholesome and one of my absolute favourite channels and I feel privileged to share the same spacetime with you on this planet. Lots of love from the frozen tundras of Santa Claus land!
My home has a landline, can't do DSL or fiber, and we haven't used the service for a long time. I depend on my cell or VOIP. My old fax machine, which uses an Ink Roll, just sits gathering dust. I am sad people comment horrible things. 😢
Great video, Perifractic! Love your dedication and you practical midnset. Never had to mess up with Faxmachines back in the day, but even with no interest in this technology from my side, you made a very interesting and compelling video about this topic. I like the walking araound and talking in nature footage. And coming from Germany myself: "Ja, Ja, das ist sehr gut! Prost!". Wish you all the best my friend!
I've seen some means spirited comments aimed at various peoples comments here (including my own), but can't believe that you've had such depraved comments aimed towards you or your family, and by that I mean in a way that I do believe it but I'm absolutely shocked by it. From my perspective you provide a great deal of fun, nostalgic, informative and enjoyable content and I can't see how anyone can find any reason to not only be mean spirited, but threatening towards you. What kind of excuses/reasons do they use?? Here in the UK they're phasing out the old copper wire stuff so they can shut down exchanges and reduce running costs. Old phones now plug into the router (same as they initially told you and what I had to do when they moved my service over) and everything goes via IP. Most connections are over fibre, with many direct to the home, though still quite a few to the cabinet in the street which then runs a copper pair to your home, so only the last few hundred feet is copper.
It confuses and infuriates me every time I hear you talking about getting hateful comments. You seem like one of the kindest people and nothing I’ve ever seen on your channel was even remotely offensive. I hope this fax works out for you. As for the trap door phone jack, those are (were) normally used in businesses as the demarcation point and the cord plugged into it went to a distribution block where the rest of the wiring was connected. I’m currently on year 25 at AT&T and for over 20 of them did exactly what the guys came to your house to do.
Sorry to hear you've had garbage comments. One of the side effects of the internet age through shared clips and comments is the realisation that the world is a lot darker place than previously thought.. But as Morgan Freeman said in Se7en "The world is a good place and worth fighting for. I agree with the second part". Best wishes 🤞🏻
Ten years ago I replaced a multi-function printer for a non-profit I used to volunteer at. The multi-function had print/ copy/ scan/ fax features. The VP of the non-profit saw the printer had a fax option, and wondered why we weren't using it? If any receipts were sent, they were received by email. No need to pay for a land line that requires a long distance plan to be useful.
It's like seeing the intro and outro of The Adam Buxton Podcast, but in a sorta different part of the planet kinda way... (I don't mean that in a rude or nasty sense, I mean, "That's good!")
My Brother multi function DRM free printer can FAX. 😀 I can't imagine why anyone would send you negative comments. You're one of the nicest and interesting content creators. ❤ It's really irritating when your postperson is lazy and can't be bothered to do their job (ie get out with a parcel) but then you didn't have it stolen.
It's a common myth that fax is more secure than email. There are several security concerns about the unencrypted transmission of faxes, and there are other issues ... in fact, you litterally showed one in the beginning of the video: reclaiming of numbers and receiving faxes not intendet for you. But legal people seems to love faxes, too, as they consider a fax a "real photocopy". Well.
It is all so sad. Internet community used be so different in the early days. Mostly geeks. The sense of wonder and excitement... Made such great friends. Now it is all full of toxity.. cannot have any intelligent conversation. It is really depressing. Thanks keeping the dream alive for the better world with hope and wonder.
Another epic repair by Perifractic! That's cool you can still have a copper pair installed to your house. Where I live (France) the old copper network started to be phased out this year and it's no more possible to have an old RTC (PSTN) plug from network companies. Fax can still be used but through the IP network.
Watching this from Austria and having German language adverts has added a whole new level. Awesome video. Well done on the PSU repair, I would have given up long ago...
Brill as usual. Proper blast from the past. There will always be haters, thats a reflection on them not you. Keep up the good work.... all the best from Manchester, UK x
Here in Australia they got rid of the copper phone lines a few years ago with the rollout of our national broadband network. In some areas they do still use the copper lines themselves for broadband, either fibre to the node or fibre to the curb (more correctly kerb, not curb as in "restrain"). Because they had to cut the lines and connect them to broadband node, they no longer connect back to the exchange, so they can't be used for a POTS phone line. And in areas where they upgraded to HFC cable or fibre, they simply no longer offer POTS phone services, so you can't get one even though the copper lines are still there. Actually, a few years ago I repurposed some old Cisco gear to build a dial-up simulator. It was basically my own personal dial-up ISP, but I was using digital modems so I could get the full 56Kbps speed rather than the 33.6Kbps maximum of a regular analogue modem. Unfortunately it was pretty useless since there were no longer any POTS phone lines to dial into it (or rather ISDN lines, since it was digital rather than POTS), but I could connect a 56K modem directly and get the full speed.
I used to work in the marine electronics industry and the local prawn fishing fleet LOVED their fax machines. This was back in the AMPS (analog) mobile phone days. It was well known that conversations on the analog phones could be intercepted (albeit illegally), so the fishing companies installed Motorola Cellular Connection boxes to their mobile phones. This simulated a good old fashioned 2-wire phone line into which a fax machine could be connected. While it was technically possible to decode a fax transmission as it was flying across the air... there was no evidence that anyone in the fishing fleet had the equipment to do this.
Hi RetroRecipes family, I enjoy your videos and lighthearted humor. Yes indeed, turn the other cheek with those cheeky people, they are just trying to dampen the good energies of your channel. peace love light
Some people are subconsciously jealous that they do not have the passion or discipline to create something themselves. So, often they lash out and try and tear someone down who does, thinking it's the closest they can come to being creative if their overt criticism is able to affect and change the behavior of someone who is. People complaining about your dogs, like they **need** the content you create without your dogs, is a clear example of such a type or person.
Some people just wake up hollow. No god. No love. No friends. Their only real interaction is to spread hate. Those people should consider meeting god again and asking for a do over. We love you guys.
I still have one fax / printer phone machine somewhere in my storage, doubt it works and probably needs a refurb by now. I kept these through the years buying and selling electronics so I can swap parts with other printers and electronic devices that happen to use the same parts or similar enough, at one point there was no money in this so I got rid of it all. No clue why I never took parts out of that specific one machine and why I even kept it. I even forgot about it through the years until now seeing this video. I remember it being big and too heavy for it's size while also the handle of the phone itself being tiny like it's a child toy, I can imagine it being quite impractical for a every day phone usage with that tiny handle but at least it had hands free option to counter that. Since it's a printer it uses regular printer paper instead of the roll that yours does.
So much inter-force police work was done via fax; back when we had internal email systems, faxes would be sent between forces and then transcribed into email.
As you said, here in Japan faxes are still pretty common. My mother-in-law used mainly faxes for her business until about three years ago. She said she preferred handwritten text. We still have one in the house, but most of her suppliers and customers have changed to email over the past couple years.
replacing the commebt section with fax sounds like a great way to limit the ability to comment to Uniated States then again I don't know how the prospects of sending fax across continents actually look
Punkt phone is a great simple alternative to the modern day smarthpone. It is streamlined to allow just text messages and calls, but also allows for hotspot so you can connect a computer to the internet if needed when traveling.
I really love your videos and as a fellow brit i admire your calm soothing voice in a british accent! Ignore the hate!! In all honesty , i have never seen anyone say a bad thing about you , so please dont worry about it!😊
Love it - I was not aware RTC phone lines were disappearing so fast. Very informative, and showing a tremendous patience in fixing this old Samsung. Just sent a fax, I hope it’s not too noisy although I paid attention to the timezone to not awake the family! Cheerz!
I haven't dug too deep into it yet but in 2025 ALL analog lines will be shut off. Today you can't get a new analog line from most companies. If you cancel an analog line, you can't get it back. The last analog line I have gets increased annually by $10 a month. They're trying to squeeze as many people out long before that time.
Sounds like only the "analogue" lines will be shut off in 2025. i.e. UK. I can't find anything like that happening in the US, and in fact the US is a mish-mash of different companies providing local telco service, so it'd be unlikely there's ever going to be one date that analog telephone service suddenly just goes away. IIUC what's happened recently is that the FCC doesn't require the telecos to provide new POTS service anymore. I don't think they'll be shutting off service anytime soon though.
@@stevesether Nope, US too. We've already been forced off our analog lines by ATT. Since it would be crazy to tie emergency lines into the same power as everything else, both elevator and fire lines are now tied to cell lines. It's been a huge mess straightening out our fax lines as well. All that because we turned up our Fiber speed.
I actually had to send a fax to one of the banks I use a few months ago because they only had fax and snail mail as alternatives to communication. I used an online service for that, as I don't have a landline. There's security benefits with FAXes, though.
I used cheques in the 90's, maybe even a couple of them in the early 2000's. Fax is not my choice for communication but TD Bank wouldn't let me send them some paper work via email, only Fax or Paper mail (across the entire world, I am in Europe right now)@@ristokempas

Keep up the great work. By the way PCB stands for Phax and Call using Bloody expensive phone line.... doesn't it?
Thank you! I replaced every capacitor, and a handful of other parts. Thankfully not everything though. PCBWayyyy!
Oh, there are still fax machines, Back to The Future didn't get it completely wrong!
The knight rider car still looks cool these days
Great to see Ashley again! 😍
Retro Recipes, the only channel brave enough to deal with just the fax.
Ladyfractic definitely giving some Zuul vibes at 19:41
I can't believe that you didn't use the term, just the fax ma'am.
You don’t need a copper telephone wire installed. I use Vonage VOIP to operate all my vintage landline phones (even rotary!) and my fax machine!
I can only say now: WOW! Every episode is a WOW episode...
Oh wow, a close relative to my fax then!
Who would have thought the humble fax machine would be making a comeback in 2024. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, thanks y'all.
Oh, my word… fine work on the Ghostbusters.
What is there to hate?? Smooth voice, Retro stuff, Lovely family, Lovely dogs and K.I.T.T ( and your a britt in the states ) I am from London and live in Cornwall. Love you all. Haters need to just turn to another channel ( like I don't watch the BBC lol ) xx
I am impressed by you perseverance to save this fax machine, I would have given up long before this! I have used plenty of fax machines during their peak, but never found them as a piece of technology I would preserve.
I couldn't let the faxer beat me!
🤘👍👍👍🎥💥 You could make it working like normal PC printer... I also have somewhere old fax machine so... 🤪
Man that must have been a long a frustrating fix.
"A new customer? This is unbelievable!" - 🤣
You made me spill my drink when you said that, LOL
Hahaha!
faxes are very much a thing still in healthcare. It's supposed to keep the patients info private, I can see it's working well!
Haha yes, really well! 😅
You can absolutely use a phone jack fron a VoIP system, and have tone while the power is out via a back up battery
Greetings from Germany
I actually had to repair some of Fax Machines in Doctors Offices in my last Job. Wasn't as awesome as your Video
Liebe Grüße, bleib gesund
Awww Peri, how could you make a fax video and not mention thst it was still used in 2015 when Marty McFly got fired!!!
Awesome video btw,you are a mega-nerd and gid bless you for it 🫶
Ironically, I’ve been looking for a fax machine to try with the VoIP line I recently installed complete with old ringy phone.
Another great video. I don't often read the comments and was sad to hear you speak of the abuse you receive 😢. Keep smiling and know that your content is loved by many😊
Watching this in the gym this morning, I must admit my heart did sink a bit and was just sad that both you have to put up with the vitriol that comes through. Surely this isn't from the true retro community and probably some sad keyboard warrior. Enough said, so wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a New Year. Keep the good work up 👍
Peri's Fax Trip Odyssey... I find it ridiculous that this channel receives such negative comments.
The process you went through to get a land line just made me appreciate that I never got rid of my land line a little bit more, thanks! 😅
Hold on, I'll fax this! ;)
Thank you for your wonderful fax. It means a lot.
Danke! Prost!
Also congratulations on your new addition to the family!
It's really irritating when your postperson is lazy and can't be bothered to do their job (ie get out with a parcel) but then you didn't have it stolen.
I got a "couldn't deliver, noone home" message for a parcel addressed to me care of the reception of a honking big hotel in downtown Santa Clara.
I had surgery in 2010 and the follow up supplies could and can only be ordered via fax.
great background tunes.
We still use fax machines at my job. Ok, only when our WIFI goes wonky. Future proof, like hand written letters lol.
Because as we all know PCB stands for Prawn Catching Boat
@@RetroRecipes 100% correct 🙂
Hi RetroRecipes family, I enjoy your videos and lighthearted humor. Yes indeed, turn the other cheek with those cheeky people, they are just trying to dampen the good energies of your channel. peace love light
greetings from germany... we still use fax for a lot of official stuff which requires signed documents.
It just works.
The 60’s film Bullit has a scene with a fax machine that I just find hilarious for some reason.
As you said, here in Japan faxes are still pretty common. My mother-in-law used mainly faxes for her business until about three years ago. She said she preferred handwritten text. We still have one in the house, but most of her suppliers and customers have changed to email over the past couple years.
Some of my Uk customers still send us info via fax to pay their company’s wages. The rest phone up.
i miss my flip phones with real keys... I loqath touch screamms.Never had a fax ever. never had to ffax anyone either.
replacing the commebt section with fax sounds like a great way to limit the ability to comment to Uniated States
then again I don't know how the prospects of sending fax across continents actually look
I've used (my legacy fax machine) to send information to my accountant because it had my social security number and was most secure.
I remember using supervoice software many years ago for answering machine and faxing. It was brilliant.
The most Daunting thing about a Fax machine was running out of thermal paper in th middle of an important document, I remeber I almost got fired.
In all honesty , i have never seen anyone say a bad thing about you , so please dont worry about it!😊
Franchise tax board requires documents to be faxed. Those are bad days.
I am very, very sorry to hear you’re having to put up with such awfulness. Nothing but love, over here.
Facsimile are still used as official documentation with lawyers and where other official documentation is needed.
Das is Good! Yeah! Love your work as always :) and the amount of time just to create this one video.
This man be spitting straight…. Fax’s. I’ll see myself out.
No can do from here. Copper has been ripped up permanently and all you get is fiber or 4G/5G.
Love it - I was not aware RTC phone lines were disappearing so fast. Very informative, and showing a tremendous patience in fixing this old Samsung. Just sent a fax, I hope it’s not too noisy although I paid attention to the timezone to not awake the family! Cheerz!
Sorry to hear you get nasty comments, love your channel. You guys are great - keep up the good work! :)
The POTS technology is expensive for what it is, and harder to find these days
@@stevesetherUS too there bud. The phasing out has begun. Did you not watch his video?
KITT had a fax machine in him and in Knight Rider 2000 someone a character in that movie sent a fake fax to free a criminal
