I think it is in CFCCGD tuning on his Guild D55NT, through a Maestro Bommerang Wah/Vol pedal, MXR Phase 90, EH Big Muff, Mutron Envelope follower, then to the Echoplex and the MM amp and cab. De Armond sound hole pickup and barcus berry (type) peizo pick up behind the bridge to a Di box and seperately to the amp, lots of gaffa tape and new Dunlop Green Flash trainers (in the 70's we called these plimsoles!). Many thanks for posting this classic concert which I had the luck to attend.
favorite singers from this era and from England would be Sandy Denny and Nick Drake and top 2 guitarists from the same period would be Richard Thompson and John Martyn. Funny how all four artists were produced by Joe Boyd and all on Chris Blackwell's Island Records! What an incredible wealth of music and creativity England had in the 1960's and 1970's. Thank you for posting this incredible performance by JM! and thank you JM for the music. Bless!
+StormOneUK Except it's nothing alike, lol. If you tuned everything up a notch, it would be D G D D A E. I've never seen that tuning outside of John Martyn repertoire, so I doubt it's standard or common by any means.
I love our John, but l saw him on a folk festival in Brittany, France in 1979 with John Renbourn, Richard and Linda Thompson etc.. . I was so drunk and stone, that he was taken off the stage. But, it was a great moment, he had flashes of lucidity to get the audience back. Then he ends up on his knees. Genius, tragedy and comedy.
I was a dj at my college in Baltimore in mid 77, used to play this tune before going out with buddies. played as much JM, Nick Drake and King Crimson as they would let me on a jazz show.
Used to watch,"rock goes to college" back in late 70"s,remember this stange but entracing song! Programme also featured many early performances of Police and Ian Dury, worth watching!
Had a fight in an airport bar with John Martyn in '92. He told me he was a Freemason and I called it the mafia of the mediocre. Anyway still love his music. Had a big influence on my songwriting and performance. Click the profile and have a listen.
np man. pleasure to help. i only heard about JM about 6 months from BBC4 jsut flicking through channels. Couldnt love you more was on. My fav on all his songs.
Excellent Dealer tutorial posted by Willie Milne 20 Jan 2019 . Williemilne@acousticguitartabs this Reading concert tuning was GGCFGC LOW TO HIGH OR CGCFGC and not CFCCGD as I thought. I think Willie is correct.
Apologies for not looking properly ! I have looked up also the 'JMartyn-Live at the BBC' DVD -deduced now it must be that DVD with the contents 'rock goes to college' . Also just now found Amazon does a 'region all' version -previously I could only find region 2 on searches (UK). Looks promising for a purchase by me now. Cheers.
@slowuncle JM often had a roadie called Kennie he offered to sell me a Mutron 3 envelope follower I had been searching for. He was a nice guy and life couldnt have been easy for him when JM had one on him! Bless
pip, thanks for the tech details. JM was a fantastic player. have you read joe boyd's "white bicycle" memoir? he says some less than nice things about JM vs. Nick Drake. i don't know what to think but i know i love JM's playing. any more details you can share on rig or tuning, pls. chime in!
Looking up, Philip Taylor has all the answers. If you take an eye on the official John Martyn website, you will find all the informations about the material used by John Martyn during all his career. Guitars, amplis, échos chamber, pedals etc...
...before MIDI, before digital, crap--- I don't even think John had a roadie. Martyn was WAY ahead of his time. Drake usually gets the kudos but John was yer man.

You just fried my brain...thankyou
Thanks for posting! Great version of a great song by a musical treasure. Gone too soon, but amazing he lived for as long as he did. ❤☮🌎
Just stunning, I can loop it all day long.
Along with Tom Waits, an epically underrated vocalist - his vocal tone is brilliant.

Rattle Shakti That's a pretty standard folk DADGAD tuning dropped a tone - except the 6th string.. will have a go at that.

Only problem is that Martyn was from Scotland - not England - but I take your point.
Unreal, gets me every time!
Guys an absolute genius
love this man
You got that right Jack!
He played the fool sometimes, but make no mistake the man was a perfectionist about his music. A class act, and much missed.
