Opting out to do something that is outside your limits is never a bad thing. As you said, you and your friends can come back when it's dryer and safer, and maybe get up there. The shrine will be there in the dry season, I don't think it will disappear suddenly tomorrow, on the next solstice, or whenever (insert anime trope). If I was going to do it, I would do it in the dry season, get a climbing harness, and figure out some sort of fall arrest system that will work on chain. Also I would bring a number of people to come with me, I wouldn't do it alone.
yeah and if they really are determined to climb it, they could also sign up for a wall/rock climbing training program to prepare for it, maybe even make content out of it,,, honestly just seeing aki experience these new stuff and challenging herself is fascinating enough
I'm actually impressed how as soon as Aki said rain is not recommended to go to the shrine, it started raining, it's like something tried to tell her to not go. But nothing stops Aki!

For hiking/climbing especially in muddy, slippery conditions, it's *all* about the footwear. If you ever plan to do more cotent that involves hiking I highly recommend investing in a good, purpose-built, pair of hiking boots. Go to a place that specializes in outdoor equipment to buy them too. They'll know exactly what kind of boot will suit your needs best and might have some good advice to help improve the quality of your hiking experiences. Seriously, a good pair of boots, properly broken in, makes a *huge* difference in your enjoyment of trodging through mud and over rocks on a steep incline. I applaud your decision to stop where you did, it's definitely not worth risking your neck over!

Hi Aki, a hiker here. While I'm not a professional, I've hiked a fair bit in the US' national parks and centers. You're fine for not finishing the hike, and it is totally understandable for not making it to the shrine. I and many others would rather have you safe than injured for a video. Admire you and your friends sense of responsibility and safety. Take care always 🥰

I completely understand. Back in August, my mom, her friend, and I hiked a mountain called the Rigi. At the time we were unaware just how steep the parts with the rope were, and when we did, it was too late to turn back. Certain parts of that hike are now a traumatic memory for me. We had some close calls and I was convinced one of us would die before we finished. Luckily, we all made it. But the camera really does distort how steep things can be. You did the smart thing and turned around while you could. Glad everyone stayed safe. ❤
Glad to see there's many places still using bones as an architecture building supply im telling you aki if you ever visit the bone cathedral or the catacombs of Paris its filled with skeletal remains so beautiful and gothic.
Even though you didn't get the video you hoped for, I think this one might even be better. Showing that even when something seems difficult, it's still good to try. And the way that you did your research, tried something new, and noticed it's not safe and quit is something a lot of people can learn a lot from. UA-cam is full of things that go way too perfect. Thanks for sharing this video.
It's definitely very important to know your limits with things. I do climbing and hiking a lot, and my job is very physical, and even I've had moments on a hike where I have to say no, it's not safe. I was hiking up a mountain called Mailbox Ridge, and there was a wall of giant rocks that seemed to be the only path up. This wall/steep slope was massive. All the rocks were covered in moss, and you would think that they would all be firmly planted in the ground. Not so. Because it rains a lot where I live, some of the rocks would wobble back and forth. I was on a rock larger than myself, the rock started to wobble, and then it started raining. Everything became slippery, and I had no choice but to keep climbing. It was terrifying. I made it ok, but several hikers had to be airlifted from that very spot that summer. One fell and was terminally injured. Always know your limits and listen to your instincts. It's good to challenge yourself, but not at the cost of your health or life, or the safety of others. Remember that it is dangerous for rescue crews to come get you if you find yourself out of your depth.
Your life is more important than seeing a shrine filled with bones and thank you for taking your safety more important than the shrine love your vid’s aki
Aki, you show fear in any haunted places you go, it’s okay to be scared, that makes you stronger, I read somewhere a Japanese wisdom quote, if I remember correctly, it’s goes “ A wise man( or woman in your view ) does not lose his( or her), a brave man does not fear” have a fantastic haunted trips
Firstly Aki you'r not a disappointment, you must think of your own safety when doing anything, and secondly we got to see most of the beautiful countryside of Japan, so thank you xxx
Thank goodness, I felt so nervous because I didn't feel you guys had enough/the right equipment to try something outside your wheelhouse. Hiking/rock climbing in an unstable steep climate without proper footwear or your own harnesses and gear while the surface is wet and soft... You attempted it and accessed the situation and made the smart and right call. Love your vlogs and just seeing the travel and eerily beautiful surroundings was entertaining and fun enough! I wouldn't mind seeing you and your friends explore outdoors some more. Prioritizing your safety made this a very enjoyable video for me, I'd have been a nervous wreck if you tried to continue when you were clearly uncomfortable. Loved the video Aki!
I thought you were really brave for even attempting such a feat. I never would have even gone out there. Thanks for showing us some pretty scenery of natural Japan! I live that waterfall and river at the end.
Hiking and climbing can be really dangerous! If you’re not experienced (and even if you are) there’s huge risk and it’s just not worth getting hurt, so definitely don’t apologize there’s nothing to be disappointed about! I hike quite a bit and do some very light climbing and often our group splits in two for people who want to go further and who don’t. There’s no shame in that at all! Its important to trust your gut and prioritize safety. Thanks for sharing a realistic opinion of this climb as well, too many influencers show the end of really challenging hikes only and then encourage others to do it when really it requires a lot of experience to do safely. Now people can see this and decide with a more informed opinion if it’s for them!
I'm honestly glad you didn't risk your life for this. No youtube video is worth losing your life for! Thank you for all the work that went into this video and for showing us another piece of Japan most of us would never know about or experience otherwise!
This video of Aki kind of reminds me of the Most Dangerous Ways To School philippines episode in Free Documentary youtube channel. That one was a hard lifestyle since those kids have no choice but to do it just so they could go to school.
I know it's late but Aki, you did a great job recognizing that your skills are not yet up to par with the challenge that was presented to you. I experienced something similar where I tried to boulder without any proper gears and overshot my abilities. I fell only from a small height that left me with a scar on my foot because someone blocked my fall with their body, but it certainly could have ended badly. In the near future I know you and the crew will be more than prepared to handle something like this, this "failure" is only a stepping stone! ❤️
They are offerings to the deity of that mountain. According to one site "This animistic practice has been handed down through generations for at least 800 years."
So wise to know your limits. Acting like you can just wing it when something requires a lot of skill that you don't have yet is how people get hurt or worse
Not disappointed, actually relieved you didn't go up that steep wall. I was terrified you guys were gonna get hurt, and at least we got to see some cool photos!
Sometimes limits are there for a reason and I'm glad you realized yours. You didn't have to put this video out but you did to remind us all that we are all human and not content makers. Thanks for the great vid Aki
Glad you didn't risk it for the views/video. The closest thing to "hiking" I did is walking up a steep hill with rocks and it was a bit damp, just walking up and I'm worried about slipping, there were leaves too and it can be easy to slip. The closest thing to rock climbing is indoor climbing, but there are safety harnesses so I can go down safely and there are staff there. Just seeing the video, I can tell it's too risky to climb since the rocks are damp, plus I imagine the chain being damp can make the climb more difficult. If the day is dry and you know it hasn't rained in a while, it might be more safer and easier to climb up. Either way, thanks for trying and the shrine looks cool!
tbh I love and appreciate aki for trying out new stuff but also knowing her boundaries and possibly pushing herself too do something that could cause her to be harmed
Count me out. I could go about as far as you did, but the coming back down would likely take me out. My legs lock up and I resort to crabwalking in the best of times, and that path is the worst of times. I’m really glad you know yourself and understand your limits and didn’t take the risk, and still managed to share a great story anyway, thank you for posting this! I’m a big fan of realistic videos on social media, and wish I saw more of it.
oh, Aki if it wasn’t for you and you made this video and I watched it. I would not have gotten onto Google Earth and look at the place up and realized just how incredibly both beautiful and slightly scary the place looks. I am intrigued by it I love the story behind it. I love you guys. It’s nice to see my favorite UA-camrs when I get the chance. How in the world could this be nothing but a win-win situation
When I went hiking in the mountains outside Barcelona last summer, there were points where we had to climb up and down using a rope. It was really difficult because the rocks were slippery and the wind would sometimes make it swing, it's especially scary when you see a rock tumble down the mountain and your eyes follow it like in the movies! But knowing Spain and Japan are about 90% mountainous, made me want to binge anime and manga set in the mountains. Mostly Junji Ito stories.
I would most likely be able to do the climb even though I weigh ~286lbs, though I am a avid hiker. However, I would never do any steep climb if there were/had been raining, that's simply asking for trouble. For steep inclines my basic tip is to have a 3 points of contact, and don't really on your arms too much - you will just tire yourself out. Glad that you played it safe here Aki, there's no shame in recognizing a dangerous situation or your own lack of ability and opting out.
Thank you for at least trying (even if you didn't try, just going to that point and seeing how steep it was, I could understand too). And actually letting us know about this place even though you were not able to get up there all the way. I am not a hiker but I could tell that was going to be really steep and hard to do especially in that sort of weather.
I would definitely try it, but I dunno if I could make it. Steep is one thing, but the ground looked like garden stones covered in moss. I'd be afraid it would just shift underneath me, and getting down is so much worse than going up! Glad ya'll made it through without getting hurt!
I'm so glad you did the safe thing and not the "for the views" route. This isn't the 90s when the Jackass crew (an American TV show) tried crazy stunts and hurt themselves permanently. You came, you saw, you planned. I say brilliantly conquered this challenge. Some people have to train for hiking for months to years even. Some people have a hiking guide to talk them through the process. You went balls to the wall rain or sunshine 😂. The water in this video was something I've never seen before. For people, like me lol, who barely leave their homes or chairs for entertainment, we can not judge you at all. You inspire me to do fun things. Not a lot does these days. You rocked it madam Aki. Keep on keepin on!
Dang, I'm really glad things turned out well. Smart choice on Aki's side imo. I'm from Switzerland and hiking accidents happen all the time. Ranging from badly equipped tourists climbing a mountain in their jordans or even experienced hikers that just got unlucky and slipped once.
Thank you for taking experienced hiker advise and taking your own safety into account rather then risking it for a video. This location isn't going anywhere if you want to come back on a drier day it'll be there. Much love and thank you for putting this video out there ❤
This just gives you motivation to learn some climbing skills. Just back burner the idea and come back to it when you're more prepared and have the right skills.
I’m just happy and impressed that someone, specifically you, was intelligent enough to acknowledge their own limitations; or at least err on the side of good judgment.
I'm glad you listened to your instincts. A lot of people climbed up the switchbacks (they looked so narrow) in Mt Charleston (NV) and managed to bring their little kids on their backs. Mine were antsy and hyper so I had to stop.
I wonder if there used to be more footings around that have been washed away or eroded over time? Did not seem feasible for most people in that state :/
I’d imagine to get the bones up there they tied the bones on their back or have them in a backpack after they cleaned/boiled the bones. Even some twine will do if you tie it through the eye sockets of the skulls. That way, the hunters/fishermen’s hands are free to climb on the chain and the rocks.
It’s better to be safe than really getting yourself hurt out there, I of course don’t know how far away that area is from the hospital but I wouldn’t want to be injured and lost!
I'd definitely give it a try! Even tho I'd likely not get far 😆 I like this series, it's different. Most of us are never gonna go to these places in Japan so it's neat to live thru you vicariously in the midst of danger 💪
12:33 I was just thinking about what Aki said about how you can’t see the steepness in a video. I wonder if it because of depth perception. Videos don’t really provide that because it’s a flat screen.
best way to climbstuff like this is to not pull on the chain, just use it to hold on to and keep your hips as close to the wall as you can, then you just try to find footholds and go up kinda like stairs or ladders, the chain is mostly just to help with balance if you pull on it you are just wasting a lot of energy
this is so cool you always succeed to find such amazing places around japan that mostly no one has seen before aki, and don´t worry you dont disappoint us, i wouldn´t want you guys to get hurt. this is still an amazing video, thank you aki i can´t wait for what you will show us in the next video, wish a good weekend :)
I love to backpack in eastern Utah. hiking steep inclines like that, as a novice is terrifying, and hard on your body. If you ever want to attempt it again, take some rock climbing classes. They’ll help a lot with your form, and make it easier.
I think you did the right thing, honestly. It did not look safe for the unexperinced. Last time I climbed a mountian, my nose bleed in my sleep that night.
This video is still very interesting and good even tough you didn't make it up there, I'm glad you didn't do anything too risky in order to make this video because it seemed very dangerous. This trip is probably one for people with actual climbing experience, but it is also crazy to think that hunters go up there with big animal bones to offer to the shrine.
Not gonna lie it looked like the way up had shifted in some ways so it was even more difficult to climb. I truly believe as someone who has been on steep hikes before in very damp a wet areas that if you didn’t stop you would have been seriously hurt. Good job trusting your instincts.
Safety above all else, if you understand your limit, then good for you. No need to listen to your ego and be unnecessary brave. That said, how far you've reached it also a commendable feat, thanks for sharing your journey.
I used to climb the massive rocks at the beach (some of the cliff faces too) with no safety anything and barefoot. I tried proper climbing as a teen and they refused to let me climb barefoot and I froze half way as I didn't have the same grip as I did with my bare feet. Never really tried it since 😂😂 so fair does for trying!
Seriously, lady, this video is super healthy. You accepted that the situation was not content worthy, and ran with it. Know your body and accepting your limitations is rare and special. Letting your viewers see this is even better. Some people are exceptionally stupid, so having someone they look up to say hey, this is what I wanted to do, but it didn't work out because..... Accepting a fail is cathartic. Please don't hesitate to do this again
There's also another Shrine which has the same or more challenge to get and that is Ota Jinja (太田神社). It is known as the most dangerous shrine in Japan, and it's on Hokkaido. I hope you can see it 😁
Always love watching your videos Aki ❤❤😊 hiking videos always makes me want to do it but I don't like bugs or dirt somehow always get in my eyes or on my face 🙄😂
I went on a hike down to some waterfalls with some coworkers when I worked at a lab in the winter and summer during school, and there was a rope chain on the wall that you had to use to climb down. I tensed too much while going down (I hadn’t realized yet that I have some physical disabilities that cause my muscles and joints to be injured very easily) and I got to the bottom only to realize I had pulled both of my quads and couldn’t stand up straight. I had to basically crouch walk everywhere around the waterfalls and on the way up, my friends luckily were able to push and pull me up so I didn’t fall. But man, that was the scariest experience while hiking bc I’m not much of a hiker to begin with, and heights scare the crap out of me. Then to hurt my legs after going down, I was terrified I wouldn’t make it back up haha. Needless to say, when I saw how steep the climb was with the chain, I’m glad you guys didn’t risk life and limb for your video😅
this reminds me of that one anime where their classroom is cursed because they had an extra studant or staff member and everyone kept dying violent deaths and had to go to a dangerious shrine thinking it will help with their curse
It's alright, no need to beat yourself up about it. The good thing is that you guys all made it back safely and still had some fun 😊 Side note: Jordan's afro looks amazing, wish I could grow mine out like that
Not disappointed Aki, you tried something you've never done before and did great. We'd rather you safe above anything else. And if anyone has an issue, they can look up more about the shrine/ do it themselves.
Jordan! I miss seeing him on the TC videos. I was not disappointed at all. I've done sketchier things but the worst part is if you get stuck halfway. You don't need that and I don't want to hear about that. Make someone else with fewer followers do that. I bet Victor would like it. :)
You made it far enough ❤️ You still managed to get content that showed how intense the travel hike of the terrain. And the added footage from sourced was made sense 🤘Lol Jordan was a good part of the video 😂 Was good seeing him swear normally he reminds me of an unofficial member of the WIGGLES 😂
No Video ever is as important as your own life. You made the right call! You still rock for even trying it :3 I dont think I would ever be able to do that I would be too scared haha
I don’t blame you at all! It was giving me anxiety watching you climb up there. I wouldn’t do it myself. It’s a shame that there isn’t a better route, hopefully one day someone will create some stairs to that shrine too!
Thank you for teaching your viewers that a UA-cam video is not worth actually risking your life in an unsafe situation ❤

the mystery is how do they even build the shrine's structures up there? like carrying bricks and stuff?
They might've carried bricks on their backs or something and bravely climbed up. Or maybe a small amount of bricks at a time? Who knows?
They were gigchads
Probably sledges, lever and pulley systems or temporary ramps.
At the most primitive level, probably a relay system.
seeing how there's landslides happening around that area, maybe there used to be a much safer and less steep way to climb up there?

You Never Have Had Disappointed Me Ever Aki. You Are Awesome No Matter What. Okay? ❤❤❤
In real life Genshin Grand Narukami Shrine.
Great try Aki! I used to hike quite a bit (disabled now) and I don’t think I would have tried that! Though I would love to see that shrine!
Do things as long as youre safe and having fun! Dang that trek looks so chill
Honestly, you did way more and way better than I would ever be able to. So this random person on the internet is proud of you.
That way, the hunters/fishermen’s hands are free to climb on the chain and the rocks.
your always going out to try and we love that and you!!
It’s better to be safe than really getting yourself hurt out there, I of course don’t know how far away that area is from the hospital but I wouldn’t want to be injured and lost!
Nothing is ever ever EVER worth content if it means risking your life. Im glad you and your friends are safe Aki. ❤
We are just glad you made it out alive and safe!❤️💕
I'd definitely give it a try! Even tho I'd likely not get far 😆 I like this series, it's different. Most of us are never gonna go to these places in Japan so it's neat to live thru you vicariously in the midst of danger 💪
It's the effort that counts. Keep it up Aki!
thank you aki for prioritizing your safety! keep safe girl!
YOU DID YOUR BEST AND I'M SO PROUD OF YOU
this is so cool you always succeed to find such amazing places around japan that mostly no one has seen before aki, and don´t worry you dont disappoint us, i wouldn´t want you guys to get hurt. this is still an amazing video, thank you aki i can´t wait for what you will show us in the next video, wish a good weekend :)
Gotta be safe, glad to take in the wonderful scenery.
Good job aki!! Think you did awesome it was pretty intense super steep
The presentation of the snack box looks great 😋
I love to backpack in eastern Utah. hiking steep inclines like that, as a novice is terrifying, and hard on your body. If you ever want to attempt it again, take some rock climbing classes. They’ll help a lot with your form, and make it easier.
I think you did the right thing, honestly. It did not look safe for the unexperinced. Last time I climbed a mountian, my nose bleed in my sleep that night.
I'd be terrified trying to climb--I'm a major klutz even on a good day. Absolutely no judgement or disappointment that you played it safe.
Aki, I’d do the same! You did a great job! No apologies needed!
I'm am so afraid of heights, so I wouldn't have made it either. No worries, Girl!
With the cicadas in the background and the mossy stones at the shrine it reminded me a little bit of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni :D
Keep up the awesome work and videos Aki
this reminds me of that one anime where their classroom is cursed because they had an extra studant or staff member and everyone kept dying violent deaths and had to go to a dangerious shrine thinking it will help with their curse
It's alright, no need to beat yourself up about it. The good thing is that you guys all made it back safely and still had some fun 😊
Side note: Jordan's afro looks amazing, wish I could grow mine out like that
Wow aki, u r so brave i wouldn't even dare go near this.
I've hiked before but this is basically rock climbing and is sooo difficult without training.
lmao the bug spray shimmy 😆
Dude I’m scared of heights and I suck at rock climbing so I’d probably die. Good job on you for knowing to follow your gut.
The only thing that's important is that ur safe aki be safe out there have a great day :)
No Video ever is as important as your own life. You made the right call! You still rock for even trying it :3
I dont think I would ever be able to do that I would be too scared haha
I don’t blame you at all! It was giving me anxiety watching you climb up there. I wouldn’t do it myself. It’s a shame that there isn’t a better route, hopefully one day someone will create some stairs to that shrine too!
