You my friend are an absolute legend. I've been playing FO4 from damn near its release on and off and between other games. My son has just started playing it but uses mods, I avoid them as I'm trophy hunting whilst playing. The building system in FO4 is absolutely frustrating to say the least. My son was watching one of your videos on the laptop when I heard what was happening. Now I'm subscribed and watching some of your vids before I boot my son of the PS4 to tidy up alot of my settlements (in a big way). Thank you, you made life a little easier 😁
You can use the rug glitch to wire inside buildings too. Just put a conduit onto a mat, connect the wire, and put the mat inside. Once placed the wire stays connected!
I've discovered that plain Warehouse walls can be quite easily pillar glitched next to scaffolding to make makeshift walls. I spent hours doing this for the Castle. I also made it more ramshackle by jamming in those wall caps and random picket / wire fence pieces!
Instead of storing guns to drop my size limit, I just drop all my junk on the ground and scrap it in the workshop mode. My Sanctuary is fairly built up, but my bar is almost completely empty.
That's what I have been doing from the beginning. I buy junk from Trashcan Carla and scrap that and everything I pick up on my travels. I'm so used to doing it in Sanctuary! It's hard for me to remember to take junk for scrapping to other settlements - there I usually end up dropping my guns - storing them and repeating that a few times.
There is also a glitch involving wires that makes creating 2 way doors and powering a settlement much easier: Firstly; connect a wire to any type of conduit. Now point the curser directly at the conduit, but make sure that the wire is highlighted in the build menu rather than the actual conduit itself. If you press the button to 'attach wire' the curser will flash and make the 'live wire' noise, however you will not see a cable appear. Go to any other conduit or powered object and press 'attach wire'. The two items will then be connected regardless of distance or objects in the way. This will pass through any and all walls ceiling and floors. There is also no limit on how far the cables will stretch. I've heard you mention 2 way doors before, and I hope this helps!Love the vids btw, keep up the good work!
Norespawns, you are an inspiration to PS4 players everywhere, who cant make as good as builds as xbox or PC players. You've inspired several of my builds on PS4, Thank you!
Davey you're a genius. I've used these glitches and they've enhanced my enjoyment of the game greatly. I particularly like adding cielings to the sanctuary houses and boarding up the windows, and using the junk fences sunk in to shoulder height to make barricades you can shoot over, because they still (STILL) haven't given us sandbag barricades. I had a thought that if you use the junk fences that way then when the settlements are attacked the settlers will stay within the perimeter instead of running outside to engage the attacks making all your defenses moot. The only thing I have trouble with is using the rug glitch to place items such as furniture, then removing the rug (some time later as you instructed) and they sink a foot or so into the ground. But its not a biggie. Thanks again for all your hard work and sharing these techniques.
Thank you sooo much for explaining in detail the specifics of the rug/ pillar glitches. I have been playing for 3 years and I use them but was using them wrong so I was getting random results and it was super frustrating. The original video I learned the glitch just said “grab the rug” and didn’t specifically mention grab all or grab just the rug.
FINALLY! Dammit, this is the ONLY video I've come across that actually SHOWS HOW to do the rug glitch properly. (Yes, I'm one of those numb-nuts who've been using "select all", and wondering why I couldn't get that damned "rug glitch" to work.) Thank you, thank, you, THANK you, Davey!!! (This game is about to get SO much better for me.)
the amount it goes down is based on how many verts the model has, the little dots in the model data that are connected with lines to form the mesh that makes up the model long story short, more complicated models
+Aresh Septango Nope, it's definitely polygons. I've seen the fields that set settlement size budgets in the game's files, courtesy FO4Edit (which is the program modders were using to do the bulk of their work before the CK was released-and still use for certain portions of said work.) Besides, using vertices instead of polygons would be much more resource intensive, I imagine, since there are several times as many vertices in any given model as there are polygons. Thus, much more information to count and process. You have the jist of the thing right, though. Model complexity does, indeed, determine how much of your size bar an object takes up. :)
Here is the wiki article about settlements. In the article it states: "The build limit is calculated by two actor values, namely triangles and draws" fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_4_settlements#Advanced_settlement_building_techniques
+Dark Jedi Princess In conventional computer graphics, polygons are represented by a list of vertices (typically three of them) plus perhaps additional data (some of it per-vertex) to describe the material, normals, etc, so it essentially amounts to the same thing.... A limit proportional to polygon count will also be proportional to vertex count.... :]
I've mentioned this in another video already but you can use the rug glitch along with the pillar glitch. But you have to make a chain of rugs in order for it to work. You can then sink or rise whatever object that's on the rug. I mainly use it for the junk fences though. It also still clips into other objects
the effectiveness of the size glitch is based on the total size allowed i.e. you have to store a lot more guns in Sanctuary than, say, Jamaica Plain to get the same amount taken from the size bar. But on smaller settlements your size bar is used quicker. It pretty much balances out
I love your taste of the Wildland Decoration (using different textures and objects!) -"The variety of the Wildland", and I have been given ideas in so many cases! If I may say so, something as a piece of advice (as an Internal Decoration Artist) the outside doors always must open through in the inside! It is something that you can easily do! I even manage to do it and it was a little tricky in the back green door in Jamaica Plain! I have not even installed any of the DLC! I use the Middle Ladder as a pillar glitch and the ashtray grouping for final correction of the door! Finally, this is the reason why I love Fallout 4 by far!!! And I keep playing it for years!!!
Errrr.... yeah... thanks for the hint with NOT selecting everything... never paid attention to this and I wondered why it worked sometimes and sometimes not. This will be a very glitchy evening for me I guess^^ Many thanks! Without your videos my settlements would look a lot different! :)
Thanks, this was very helpful. I've always mostly focused on architecture-related mechanic on my channel, until mods came to PS4, and with USO I started glitching more stuff. My viewers started commenting and mentioning the pillar glitch which I never really bothered to learn (I always just used the rug)... so thank you for showing exactly how the pillar and rug work in unison. I'm definitely subbing to your channel, and I look forward to seeing what else you have! :)
Other things you can do to lower the size restriction: * Scrap all the unnecessary litter lying around town (unless you feel that piles of tires and rusting mailboxes contribute to the ambience). * Instead of tossing all your junk in the workshop, throw it on the ground and scrap it. This has other benefits - you'll get all the resources from each item (whereas if a recipe needs an item for an ingredient, the others are wasted). Also it's a lot easier to tell how much of a given raw material you have this way.
Duuude, thank you so much! I’m doing another playthrough to finish up achievements and I never really messed with the settlements too much as the game mechanics are frustrating. This will allow me to make some really cool settlements!
I've found the settlement size glitch with storing weapons works great with stacks of weapons. I'm not sure off the top of my head if this works with all weapons (I don't think it works with heavy weapons), but for pistols and I think rifles you can drop stacks of weapons but they just show up in the world as one weapon with a "(10)" next to it. So when you store it, you're effectively storing 10 weapons at the same time, and getting a 10x boost on the settlement size glitch. I didn't know about the pillar/rug glitch combo. That will be super useful.
If the item sinks through the ground some when you delete the rug. Add more rugs under it and it will land on the ground. The mesh of the ground and the item doesn't catch immediately so the falling furniture falls through. Do the rug glitch like this instead if t happens. Thing _______ ___ ___ ___ ___ So the top rug sticks out from the stacks, with the item only support by the one rug. And the bottom one is sticking out from the stack. Then delete the top rug holding the item in the air. When it falls it will land on the ground. If it sinks still, use more rugs. You are looking for enough time for the item to 'see the ground'. So more rugs is the answer. 7 or 8 total rugs usually does it. But more with absolutely fix it if it doesn't work the first time. Good luck!
Davey. To get the rug to go without dropping the item it's attached to, effectively let go of the item you have rug glitched in, you need to fast travel away to a different cell, so fast travel to diamond city or to another interior location ala one of the subways. Save, reload game and then the rug should be able to be removed. Sometimes this can take another few tries to get the rug to let go of its objects.
It goes down by Triangles used in model. Settlement limit is made of two factors. Total Number of Objects and Total Number of Triangles used. Either them hit limit and you can't build (Most of times its triangles hit).
Ok, this one was really helpful. I was freaking out with this damned Junk fences as i build at tenpines. I was mostly using the concrete glitch, combined with some rug glitches, but one segment of the fence, that one with the tyres, was a real pain in the ass to place down to look good. Now, i retry with the combined glitch and life was never easier :-) Thx a lot!
Not gonna lie.... never learned how to do the rug glitch so using pillar glitches or using a fence post with the select all glitch is how I normal do things.
Thanks so much.. Yes I am new to fallout and was one of the peeps that thought it wasn't working for me.. you cleared that up for me since none of the other videos I've watched mentioned the not with snapables .. thanks again
I can confirm, at least in my experience, that the rug glitch did not work for me with mods on Xbox, specifically with mods that changed ground and landscape textures, junk, debris, etc. I used the rug glitch a lot before downloading these mods, and had no trouble at all. Just my experience. Always look forward to Davey's vidoes!
If you want to retrieve a lost rug, use concrete shack foundations. Set one next to where the rug is, deep as it can go, then snap another foundation into it, over the rug. Group select, raise them up, then store each foundation. The rug will be right there.
The size bar goes down faster depending on the amount of data/memory space/high textures the gun uses. So a gun can be completely unmodded but have a high detail amount. And the rug glitch works, people just can't find the 'dependence point' as I call it. (The point of which the item becomes dependant on the floor below it) any items that snap or float will not snap.
Found this. Did a glitch. Worked to make wiring easy. Now I can make my settlements snug as a bug in a rug, presumably because I am using a bug in a rug. Thanks mah dude.
(10:15) xJokersGirlx showed a test for whether it's safe to remove a rug. Select the rug and try to move it. If the object sitting on it moves with the rug, it hasn't "detached" yet, so just cancel the move. If the rug comes away, you can drop it and store it.
How much the settlement limit bar goes down is linked to the complexity, not the size. I.e. a small pipe gun with a couple of mods will have more effect than a sledgehammer. The more mods and additions on a weapon, the better it goes down. I usually keep a store of various versions of fully modded assault rifles. Makes it quick and simple
About the guns jou store, the amount the size bar goes down depends on the "amount"? Of textures on the gun. That is why a gamma gun works realy well but a rocketlauncher does almost nothing
Davey I think you should try using the flower rug more. It is medium size so you never are unable to put something there. Plus it's the only rug that I can get the rug glitch to work. Tip for people who don't know how to use the rug glitch: try flower rug!
That is such a great idea with the boarding up the windows, I've always put the full wall in, know about the pillar glitch but no the half wall thank you will def try it out
another reason why the dark coloured rug is better than the orange-ish one is that its a bit thicker so its a bit easier to see the item jump up onto the rug
The game counts each mod you have on the guns as a seperate item for the settlement limit so the more mods you have on a gun when you store it the more the settlement limit will go down.
Brilliant timing thanks Davy! I had literally just opened UA-cam to try and find y the proviso video, as I was having problems with junk fences. Problem solved :-)
Good tutorial, even after all of these years lol I've been spending a lot of time on fo4 vr lately and managed to build some stores inside of the starlight drive-in dinner section
I've said it before! But incase you haven't caught it once the vault tec workshop dlc releases if all assets are available, a build idea: if it's aloud maybe instead of a vault you can make an underground shantytown? We'll see....
After the workshop dlc i had a glitch on red rocket, and now i have unlimited buildingspace and since it was my first so it had much structures in there it's just a little sad that i never go there anymore haha nice vid btw ^_^
It would make sense if the SIZE was based entirely on the amount of resources used in construction-- meaning that when weapons with many mods are scrapped, much resources are reclaimed and thus subtracted from SIZE.
Thanks for this Davey, it's a really helpful video :-) I'll be doing my next FO4 play-through on PS4 for the first time too, so super-clear instructions, cheers! I've also been watching StaciPlaysFallout's videos, and she uses little items to help place items on shelving and makes rope ladders and different things like that, so can't wait for Bethesda to release an Ultimate edition of the game so I can get cracking!!
Currently trying to phase a food processor through the cafeteria wall on vault 88 to make it look like a dispensor that can be contolled by a terminal next to it
I am having issues with the pillar glitch. I can select all with other items but not with rugs or ashtrays. Trying to put an upper level on a house in Sanctuary, going off of what you showed in a much older video. Is it still possible or am I just messing it up?
In his sanctuary tour a few days ago he had floors in his sanctuary house is this done with the pillar glitch and adding it to the repair houses method I suspect?
Dude the rug trick can pick up metal walls no problem i have done it. And also dont give the reduce the size glitch without warning that you can crash your settlement if you do it too much
Would you happen to know if there's a way to make a sign look like its attached to a post? So you could make for example a Hazadous Material sign post.
Read with me this chapter from the Book of Tod. Oh great pillar. From glitches you came to us and saved our settlements with your sinking powers. You are are love and are hope. Loveth Tod.
On the rug glitch - It wont work if either your fallout4.ini or fallout4pref.ini include the line bUseCombinedObjects=0 which is usually required for mods that let you scrap leaves and detritus or the older Sanctaury bridge replacement mods. This is also the cause for not being able to place objects inside the castle.
I always see you build the big fan generator into the shack foundation floor. I've never been successful at that. Me generator always stays on top of the floor. Any glitches for that?
Hey nore I have a problem of place items in ps4 save of fallout and they tend to disappear or glitch slowy down and down. Have you had this happen or do you know how to fix if it has?
if you are on ps4 the select all will work with snappable items but then it wont snap into place and you will have to place it manually i used it to place walls around my garages to turn them into rooms it will let it cliptrough the roof a little bit and allow it to be placed in a slightly different place that would normally allow idk if it is the same with other systems
Before I knew about the rug glitch I was on the PS4 then I moved to the PC now I decided to play both but the rug glitch isn't working for me am I just doing it wrong ? if so can I get some tips?
I think I've decided that, once I get back from vacation, I'm going to scrap all of my settlements and redo them using all of the new techniques I've learned from Davie. Also the excess resources will be nice
I'm so glad to finally hear that you actually notice the comments, telling you to fucking stop storing that shitty pillar EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN TIME DAVEY :D
Is that a new save? What happened to your wall??? would like a tour of this one if you haven't done one already. Also, great video, I've been one of those annoying people asking about the glitches. Really informative
so my issue is with the select all rug glitch and complex structures, like fixing the roofs in sanctuary, individual items still work. so i used a wire fence post instead.
I did the weapon size glitch at the castle. 5 mins later, super stutter ensued and i quit the game. I hope it fixes itself when i play otherwise i gotta delete some stuff.
hey. random question. im not sure how the defence works. is it the highest of your food and power or both combinedd and does it include the power in it.its mainly the power im confused with. i have like 4 fusion generators so di i need to have 400 defence now as well. also love your videos
hey no respawn just thought have you discovered kings port light house. if so perhaps that could be the next let's build because it seems like a a great place for you to go nuts and I would love to see what you come up with. just a suggestion
Hello, I've been seeing this "pillar trick" a LOT recently and I play on Xbox One with no mods or DLC's. Is there any way to do this with vanilla fallout items? Thanks.
6 years later and this was still really useful, thanks dude
7 now*** lol
7 and 1 month 😂
for those without dlc: you can use the meat totems instead of the concrete pillar
Or you can use the second stairs
Gross, yet effective.
You could also use the bridge at the end of the wood tab.
Picket fence posts work nicely too.
You my friend are an absolute legend. I've been playing FO4 from damn near its release on and off and between other games. Am I the only one who originally called Davey's channel Nore Spawns.
Close, I called it Nores Pawns. I felt like an idiot when I realised.
I still call it Nore Spawns. Mad Davey Nore Spawns showing how to craft like a fucking boss
I did too until I heard him say it himself
This has to be the best video I've seen on this subject. Trying to get really into settlement building on this play through

Thanks so much. After almost a year I finally, truly understand the rug glitch. I've watched dozens of videos on it, but that is a great explanation.
I've seen a couple of vids showcasing this, but this was the first time I UNDERSTOOD the mechanics. thanks
Hey Davey, you didn't really clsrify this in the vid, but does the rug glitch still work?
*clarify
Gr8 b8 m8
+Jorund Shadefur hes being sarcastic
+Soviet Turtles he explained THE rug GLITCH. Not the rug glitch that you were interested in.
Davy, the glitch isn't working for me....
Just kidding! They've been awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Dave !!! Probably the most useful fallout settlement building video I've seen
I've mentioned this in another video already but you can use the rug glitch along with the pillar glitch. But you have to make a chain of rugs in order for it to work.
+norespawns Thanks for explaining that items that snap will not work! This is your best vid yet! At least for me!
I recently was stuck with the junk fences trying to build on uneven ground. I never realized that you could use the pillar with the rug. Thanks.
If the item sinks through the ground some when you delete the rug. Add more rugs under it and it will land on the ground.
The mesh of the ground and the item doesn't catch immediately so the falling furniture falls through.
Do the rug glitch like this instead if t happens.
Thing
_______
___
___
___
___
So the top rug sticks out from the stacks, with the item only support by the one rug.
Good luck!
Sink a floor, then the blue stool above it. Sit in chair and you go under the map. Then grab your rug if you want it. :)
Anyone else settlers in sanctuary just stand behind the house across from yours in the middle of the night despite them having perfect beds?
yup - it's where the settlers 'spawn' - really annoying.
+norespawns thanks for the info

Thanks dude, watched a lot of videos but none had explained it in such detail... All makes sense now ^_^ much appreciated.

Will not work with the rug*
Don't know why I said they wouldn't snap
as I know, the bar mostly is based on general polycount... making objects with bigger polycount increase or decrease more the bars.
Your building vids have helped me tremendously Davey, thank you and please keep em coming
Found this. Did a glitch.
Worked to make wiring easy. Now I can make my settlements snug as a bug in a rug, presumably because I am using a bug in a rug.

(10:15) xJokersGirlx showed a test for whether it's safe to remove a rug. Select the rug and try to move it. If the object sitting on it moves with the rug, it hasn't "detached" yet, so just cancel the move. If the rug comes away, you can drop it and store it.
Davey! on the combo glitch, you CAN get the rugs back, just hover over where it would be and you can find the tooltip and store it.
Great build man! I really like the nature setting and your pick of mods! Keep building!
Makes it quick and simple
thanks dude, your videos are really helping me! are you doing new video tutorials or you gave up on fo4?
Been watching ever since your second video. Thank you for making consistently great and helpful vids
The rug glitch does work I use it all the time with settlement building it's a awesome trick to know this place the item a little bit on the rug
Didn't know about glitching the glitch. Many new possibilities with that one.
About the guns jou store, the amount the size bar goes down depends on the "amount"? Of textures on the gun. That is why a gamma gun works realy well but a rocketlauncher does almost nothing
Every building knowledge I know comes from you senpai (well, mostly)!
7:00 Aaah now I understand what I was doing wrong with the pillar glitch. Thanks!
Davey I think you should try using the flower rug more. It is medium size so you never are unable to put something there. Plus it's the only rug that I can get the rug glitch to work. Tip for people who don't know how to use the rug glitch: try flower rug!
That is such a great idea with the boarding up the windows, I've always put the full wall in, know about the pillar glitch but no the half wall thank you will def try it out
Ahhh, thank you Davey, I had a mod which allowed me to scrap anything, so it wouldn't let me sink things into the houses to make the ceilings
another reason why the dark coloured rug is better than the orange-ish one is that its a bit thicker so its a bit easier to see the item jump up onto the rug
thanks for this :) I've always been holding the button down when I tried the rug glitch now I can actually do it properly lol
You'll be able to use the normal workshop items along with the new vault pieces. Not sure if you can make vaults above ground though.
Gamma gun is the best gun to use for the limit glitch. Moves pretty fast for each gun.
After the workshop dlc i had a glitch on red rocket, and now i have unlimited buildingspace and since it was my first so it had much structures in there it's just a little sad that i never go there anymore haha
nice vid btw ^_^
It would make sense if the SIZE was based entirely on the amount of resources used in construction-- meaning that when weapons with many mods are scrapped, much resources are reclaimed and thus subtracted from SIZE.
Subbed since 3k. Can't believe how fast you have grown. Keep up your good videos man!
ta :)
This was actually super helpful I thought I knew the rug glitch before I was wrong lol
thanks that rug and pillar glitch didnt know about that till now... awesome man👍👍
Currently trying to phase a food processor through the cafeteria wall on vault 88 to make it look like a dispensor that can be contolled by a terminal next to it
I am having issues with the pillar glitch.
Thank you - been watching a lot of your vids and learning alot. Hoping to post some stuff soon.
@norespawns finally came across this vid and thanks...i was holding the select all and couldnt get it to work.
In your Sanctuary Detailed Tour besides your shrine to Atom how did you make Nora's Grave? By the way love your videos!!
it's just a fence post and then two small concrete floor pieces. I then added a vault suit and some small details.
Read with me this chapter from the Book of Tod.
Oh great pillar. From glitches you came to us and saved our settlements with your sinking powers. You are are love and are hope. Loveth Tod.
Thank you sooo much for 5his explaination. I was having issues with the rug glitch before. this cleared it up
On the rug glitch - It wont work if either your fallout4.ini or fallout4pref.ini include the line bUseCombinedObjects=0 which is usually required for mods that let you scrap leaves and detritus or the older Sanctaury bridge replacement mods.
This is also the cause for not being able to place objects inside the castle.
the rug glitch does work on walls used it for filling gaps used it to place doors in the destroyed buildings
I always see you build the big fan generator into the shack foundation floor. I've never been successful at that. Me generator always stays on top of the floor. Any glitches for that?
Davie would you make a video about the boston airport?
Hey nore I have a problem of place items in ps4 save of fallout and they tend to disappear or glitch slowy down and down. Have you had this happen or do you know how to fix if it has?
When I say items I mean like teddy bears and typewriters.
if you are on ps4 the select all will work with snappable items but then it wont snap into place and you will have to place it manually
i used it to place walls around my garages to turn them into rooms
it will let it cliptrough the roof a little bit and allow it to be placed in a slightly different place that would normally allow
idk if it is the same with other systems
Before I knew about the rug glitch I was on the PS4 then I moved to the PC now I decided to play both but the rug glitch isn't working for me am I just doing it wrong ? if so can I get some tips?
Thanks, this video does a great job of explaining how these works!
Will you try and make a simple to do resource glitch? I feel you'll make it easy to understand
The only thing I have a problem with the rug glitch is that on the bid junk fence gate, it sinks in way to low, is there any known way around that?
Is that a new save? What happened to your wall??? would like a tour of this one if you haven't done one already. Also, great video, I've been one of those annoying people asking about the glitches. Really informative
new save - and with any luck I should have the official tour of this one up later :)
Cool, I like where you're going with that settlement, from the little that we saw
so my issue is with the select all rug glitch and complex structures, like fixing the roofs in sanctuary, individual items still work. so i used a wire fence post instead.
+SEAMROGS just food and water; make sure your defence is higher than that
Thank you
I don't have DLCs, is there something that work the same as concrete pillar?
To lower and uprise things
Peppe Pirozzi I'm replying to get a notification if anyone answers
Maybe scaffolding? (Sorry for bad english)
The concrete floor in the wood area I don’t know what it’s called
Peppe Pirozzi you can try to use the super mutant totems from the misc section in structures.
hey no respawn just thought have you discovered kings port light house. if so perhaps that could be the next let's build because it seems like a a great place for you to go nuts and I would love to see what you come up with. just a suggestion
it's on the radar - I do wan to go back there at some point. But right now I'm finishing the settlements close to sanctuary.
+norespawns fair enough reason, it's just I discovered it and instantly thought I would love to see what you come up with :)
Hello, I've been seeing this "pillar trick" a LOT recently and I play on Xbox One with no mods or DLC's. Is there any way to do this with vanilla fallout items? Thanks.
Kaskum dlc
Use place anywhere but change the settings of the mod to see the menu everytime you use it
It gives you the option to precisely place it
Some guy in the comments said that you can also use the meat pillar from super mutants in your building mode instead of the concrete pillar.
